This home is our primary residence. Our children grew up in this home and now return to visit with their families. Construction began in the fall 1993 and finished in 1995. John's love of Castles began when he was a young child and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania. As an adult he found this beautiful 500+ acreage of land quite by accident in the woods of New Hampshire. The plans to build this home began after much travel throughout, Europe exploring other castles. Today, after our five children have grown up and left this wonderful home, they continue to return to this gorgeous property to come together as a quite large extended family. We continue to celebrate many of the holidays here with our family and have now opened it up to you so that you may enjoy it as much as we do.
John & Lynda Hunt purchased this castle in 1995
The Cathedreal of the Pines is a must see located in Rindge 5 minutes away with beautiful gardens; a historical landmark you would not want to miss. In less than 30 minutes, one can venture to Mount Monadnock, the most climbed mountain in the world. For the first time climbers, Pack Monadnock , only 25 minutes drive (across from Temple Mountain), is also a great family climb for those who have younger children. The views are spectacular. The town of Fitzwilliam, approximately 10 minutes away, is famous for it's Antiques. The town of Peterborough ( approximately 20 minute drive or less) well known for the 'Peterborough Players' theatre house, was also the setting for the well known play 'Our Town'. It also has many cozy shops and wonderful restaurants. The bustling city of Keene is great for window shopping, fine dining, and entertainment. The Colonial Theatre in Keene, features plays with some well know actors, singers and comedians and is located on Main St. Twinkle Town miniature golf can also be enjoyed by all and is located between the towns of Rindge and Keene approximately 15 minutes away. Also, there are many lakes and state parks that are close by (not more than 20 minutes drive) for a great beach day.
The castle was all the we hoped for and more. The layout, particularly the living room (with grand piano) and the central staircase (with suit of armor) were fantastic--well appointed, lavishly decorated, and impeccably maintained, with plenty of books, games, and movies. The kitchen had all the amenities, including staples (we had brought our own, not knowing what to expect).
We were 10 adults and 7 children. Even though it rained all weekend and we were essentially housebound, there was plenty of room for us to spread out, play, and socialize. (Ours was a family reunion, so that's how we wanted it. It was perfect for us.) We even used the jacuzzi outside and the kids had fun sliding down the hill. The bedrooms were wonderful and the playroom upstairs was great for the kids. We also got good use out of the pool table, darts, and poker table in the basement. It was extremely comfortable and everybody loved it.
The owner was very gracious. He provided a one-page listing of restaurants, etc. in the area prior to our arrival. He was very appreciative of our treatment of the place (we were conscientious about cleaning) and happily and promptly refunded our deposit in full.
The location, despite being just over the border from Massachusetts, is fairly remote. The property is grand, with great views. Outdoor activity is your best bet.
I recommend mapping out directions very carefully in advance. We got lost despite having a navigation system, a printed Google map, and maps on an iphone. Some roads are minor or dirt, and not all systems recognize them. Once you know where you're going, it's not difficult.
We were anticipating a great time in a great place, but WOW! The castle and grounds were absolutely perfect! There was a bit of construction going on and even that was a pleasurable experience because the guys working were so quiet, courteous and friendly and stayed out of the way as much as they could. We all fell in love with KR and were so glad to have met him and had the castle tour with him.
Our group included 11 adults and 7 kids, ages 2-8. Everyone was thrilled and over the top excited about all the castle offered for fun and comfort. All beds and furnishings were very comfortable, clean, exquisite and yet functional. We were in NH for a wedding and it was hard to pull ourselves away from our castle fun to attend wedding activities. Loved the hidden passages, the roof and turrets, the 3rd floor play area, the lower area with pool table, ping-pong, the playground, hottub, lake with swimming dock, sand beach, fire pit and a fleet of watercraft and life vests ~ no one was left on the beach! Seems at every turn someone was finding another "favorite thing" about the castle! And that's just the beginning! We didn't even explore the trails or enjoy the Frisbee golf course. Didn't have enough time to get our fill of all the fun!
Because of the wedding and travel to NH, our family was unable to go to Disneyland as planned. The grandkids decided the castle was even better than Disneyland!
One of our granddaughters (3 years old) mistakenly left behind her beloved little grey teddy bear. We thought she would forget after a few days and I hunted for a replacement since she asked everyday if some could go today to the castle and get it for her. We live in WA so that wasn't possible. I mentioned it to John and Lynda in an email and they replied that it was found and asked where to send it. I wish I could post the pictures of her delight as she opened that package and found her teddy bear inside! They went above and beyond for us in doing this!
Hope we will someday be able to come again to the castle and stay longer!
Thank you John, Lynda, Mike and KR!
We just got back from 5 nights at the castle and could not have had a better time! We had 5 families with a total of 11 children, ages 1 - 6. The weather cooperated beautifully, which made it easy to enjoy the expansive property. The kids ran around nonstop outside: they played on the playground, played soccer on the huge lawn (there were a couple nets there that acted as soccer goals), and swam in the lake, where we all had fun on the small fleet of watercraft (stand-up paddleboards, paddle boats, kayaks, and a small sailboat). We did a little fishing in the lake too, but no luck there.
There was also a 1.8 mile trail around the lake that made for a good (albeit uneven) running path, as well as a network of cross-country skiing trails to augment it. Sadly, we did not make it out to the Frisbee golf course.
The house huge and provided plenty of space for everyone to move around. One note: not every bedroom has its own bathroom, but it was convenient enough that we were able to make it work. All the kids stayed on the 3rd floor, which was a great space for playing and reading stories. A couple of the kids were spellbound by the Lego collection and would disappear for hours into that room.
Overall it was a great stay, and both John and Mike (the caretaker) were helpful, friendly, and accommodating. We would certainly be back if our travel plans ever brought us back to the area.
Our group of 14 had a great weekend stay. The castle was as advertised. It is very spacious. The basement area is great for pool, ping pong, poker, etc, and there is a nice kids area upstairs with a huge Lego table. There is a great field in the backyard for soccer or other games and a nice beach with a ton of kayaks and other boats. Also, the town of Rindge is pretty close and has a few supermarkets and a Wal-Mart, so easy to stock up on whatever you need. Highly recommended.
We rented this castle for my Mom's 80th birthday celebration. There were 16 adults and 4 children. There was so much room and so many places to explore. It was an incredible weekend. When we first entered the castle there was a Night in Shining Armor to greet us. Amazing! All the rooms were beautiful, beds were comfortable and the decor was exquisite. The Bar/Pool room in the basement is awesome. We spent a lot of time playing pool, ping pong, cards and had many laughts. We even hosted a Tea Party on Saturday in a traditional English style complete with tea sandwiches, crumpets, and lots of fun accessories including Boa's. The 4 girls (all under 12) were in their glory! The dining room where we held the tea party is gorgeous! We felt like princess's. We will definitely be coming back to this castle someday soon.
A great big thank you to the owners!
I heard about the castle from Rep. John Hunt, the owner, when I served with him in the N.H. Legislature. This year, by God's grace it worked out that 23 of us from the Manuse, Manzella and Baase families were able to secure a week there to live like kings and queens.
When I approached the castle and toured the building for the first time, my excitement rose with every step as the decor impressed everywhere I looked. While it took a little while to uncover all the hidden passageways, I found the best one first and climbed the high tower. From the top, I greeted my family members as they pulled up the drive; all while staring out at beautiful Mount Monadnock and down to the spacious lake. Many of us later enjoyed several sunsets from up there. I suppose it was also on that tower that I realized the significance of this vacation: At the castle, there were 500 acres of privacy for my family to enjoy alone.
The castle provided more than enough room for us. We enjoyed many a meal--each taking a turn to make one in John and Lynda's well provisioned kitchen. We had the first night catered by Luca's, per John's recommendation. We enjoyed the many boats on the lake, we fished, had fires in the chiminea near the house, played bocce, frisbee and croquet on the massive front lawn, and we played disc golf on the challenging course designed by disc golf founder Ed Headrick. My wife and I walked around the lake and enjoyed the wilderness. We biked around all the service roads, starting of course from the castle's patio so we could cruise down the hill. We played pool, table tennis and Euker in John's fantastic man room. We watched an amazing meteor shower laying on the castle's flat roof.
The children quickly discovered the hidden lookout spires, the trampoline, the game room and lego/train table and all the dress-up materials in their sleeping area upstairs. The girls brought dresses and became little princesses for the day. The boys played with their trucks on the hill outside as this was going on. The kids loved the playset, the beach and all the little bridges onto the many tiny islands around the beach. They loved rolling down the hill. Some of the older kids enjoyed the entertainment system later in the evening.
I believe my family's vacation at the castle was better than I could have ever expected. The caretakers Mike and KR were amazingly helpful and friendly. I am extremely grateful to John and Lynda Hunt for making their home available to us!
