Honey Bee is a beautiful, historic, private island rental nestled in the very heart of the 1000 Islands (1865 enchanting islands to be precise) which dot the shores of St. Lawrence River. It is reachable by boat in 10 minutes from Boldt Castle and eight minutes from the quaint town of Ivy Lea, Ontario. Boat rentals are available locally at a reasonable cost.

Set in a tranquil bay, bordered by a National Park, the newly restored 134-year-old hand adzed log cabin enjoys spectacular sunsets and views in all directions. The property is very upscale. The cabin has all the comfort and amenities of a luxury home, yet on your own private island. It provides a unique holiday off the beaten track in a charming part of the world, an experience of complete relaxation where you are the master of your own time and space. It is the perfect remedy for anyone seeking adventure and escape with utter privacy yet without isolation.

The river is lovely for fishing and swimming, with summer water temperatures usually in the mid 70s as there are several natural underwater warm water ‘springs’ near the dock. At Honey Bee, you enjoy water so clear you think that you are swimming in an aquarium. If you are looking to rough it, this is the wrong place.

Numerous water toys such as swim floats, water tube floats and an assortment of life jackets are provided at your holiday cottage. Boats, Jet Ski’s, kayaks and canoes are available for rent nearby for our guests' enjoyment. Paddle your own canoe or kayak through wilderness routes in the nearby wildlife refuge or fish in a world-class angler's paradise on this huge body of water.

The Cabin is tucked away under pine and oak trees. Waken to the songbirds and watch the sunrise over Hill Island while sipping your morning coffee out on the deck. Hearing the water lapping on the rocks through the open screened windows at night, makes for a restful sleep. Relaxing on your own private Island, it's just Yet, all conveniences are just minutes away. Supermarkets, restaurants, liquor stores, post office, churches, pharmacy, just everything including a hospital is available within minutes in Alexandria Bay directly by boat to their respective docks or by car to Gananoque.

About Michael Laprade

We found Honey Bee Island on a family trip to celebrate Michael's grandfather's 100th birthday in Ottawa, Canada. We were amazed that although born in Montreal, Michael had never seen this magical area before moving to the States. Now, coming from our home in California, we fell in love with the region.

Michael Laprade purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Michael Laprade chose Ontario

The "Bee" as we call our island was just right. A lot like Goldie Locks and the 3 was not too small, not too big and not too new. It had history from the hand adzed log walls to the many stories we have collected from previous owners. Set up high on the forested island, you have 360 degree views of the River, each window is looking at the water. Our docks work for boating and sun bathing and a must for cocktail hour sitting on the Adirondack chairs watching boaters go by. It had everything from easy water, a current that was not too fast, or deep, and eye candy in looking at the wooded shores around you from other of space around you and sunrises and sunsets to remember.

What makes this cabin unique

You are 15 min. by boat to Alexandria Bay or Ivy Lea, you can go to dinner, the bank, grocers, post office or hardware store by boat, not to mentions a dozen restaurants on both sides of the River. The island is in the middle of the International Rift, and a 5 mph boating speed zone, slow and easy does it so no wake to rock your world at the dock, jet skis and float plane are just fine.

Our private island experience

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time on the island . The accommodations from the house are fantastic and the kids had a great time sleeping on the porch with the baby osprey wake up call ! We realized that fishing and swimming was a great activity for the whole family and the perches, catfishes and sunfishes are so attractive that we could hardly leave them in peace . Michael and Janice are great hosts and made us very comfortable in finding our ways on the river. One point of caution is to be ready with the time and the process for immigration every time you go from the US to Canada which happen quite often as the property is on the border

Owner's Response: Thank you for yet another great review! It was a pleasure having you as our guests and I must say you are the poster children of the type of guests we love to have. The entire Thousand Islands area is blessed with so many rich offerings and to enjoy some of them does require crossing the US / Canadian border. Thankfully the process is made simple and convenient by allowing people to “check-in” free at virtually any restaurant, marina or public dock by telephone. A great way to enjoy ‘International travel”!

Takes my breath away

My fiancée surprised me with a one week vacation on this magical island! It was the most romantic experience! He will have a lot of trouble toping this. Even after having left Honey Bee Island the experience has stayed with us.

We spent the first days swimming, sun bathing on the dock, picking wild blueberries that grow on the island, viewing the stunning scenery and my man cooked on the professional sized BBQ. The animal life around the island was fantastic! You can watch the fish swim around in the clear blue-green waters and the Canadian geese float by with their fluffy little babies following them. Fishing is excellent around the island and there is a ton of stuff to do in the area. We went to Ottawa for an afternoon and visited the museums. 10 minutes by boat from the island are 2 castles: Bolt Castle on Heart island and Singer Castle on Dark Island they are both stunning. We also went scuba diving and were able to go inside a shipwreck! My parents are going for their wedding anniversary.

Loved it, Loved it, Loved it!

We stayed at this magical cabin with our two teenagers. It was everything that we had been promised and so much more. Incredibly clean, upscale, comfortable and our very own private island!

We still talk about it often as we have NEVER had a more enjoyable vacation. We would recommend it for anyone and plan to return for a romantic getaway of our own. The swimming was in clean clear waters that indeed were like swimming in an aquarium!

The kitchen was better equipped than my own at home with all new stainless appliances on granite counter tops. The beds were luxurious comfort in an Adirondack style historic log cabin.

I can't say enough about the owners. They were wonderful.

We are definite fans!
