This beautiful mountain home is nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounded by two gentle streams on 26 private, wooded acres. It is adjacent to Jones Gap and Caesar's Head State Parks, a part of the 10,000-acre protected environment for many rare and endangered plant and animal species known as the Mountain Bridge Wilderness. Hiking and mountain biking trails abound here and in the nearby DuPont State Forest and Pisgah National Forest.
The house itself has the warmth and charm of gentler times when families from Greenville came to the mountains to escape summer’s heat and humidity. It has since been thoroughly reconstructed with the installation of a gourmet kitchen, totally new infrastructure including new bathrooms, central heating and air conditioning. We call it “Pentimento” because the charm of the old subtly shines through the new.
There is a master suite with a king-sized bed and adjacent full bath on the first floor. Upstairs, a second master suite has a king-sized bed, a private full bath and walk-in closet. Two more bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed and the other with two double beds, share a third full bath.
The house comfortably sleeps three or four couples, or two couples plus several single adults or young children. The dining area table seats a maximum of eight people.
The wrap-around porch and wood burring stone fireplace in the living room are both great places for gathering family and friends.
In addition to hiking and biking, there are several great golf courses nearby as well as fishing horseback riding, river rafting and many other outdoor adventures. The nearby City of Brevard, home of Brevard College and world famous Brevard Music Center, offers great restaurants, arts and crafts and shopping. There are many summer children’s camps nearby including YMCA Camp Greenville and its a great wedding venue, Pretty Place (Symmes Chapel).
We’re centrally located to conveniently explore the entire Upstate South Carolina/Western North Carolina area. Hendersonville, Asheville and Greenville are all within 40 to 80 minutes away.

My husband and I are high-tech industry retirees who are fortunate enough to be able to spend part of our year in the fantastic Upstate South Carolina/Western North Carolina mountains. We rebuilt this wonderful vacation home in 2004 and are happy to share it with others who love the area as much as we do.
The Owner purchased this house in 2004
This property has been in our family since it was built in 1939 by my grandmother as a respite from Greenville's summer heat. Previously used only in the warm months, the house has been completely renovated with a gourmet kitchen and a totally new infrastructure including comfortable, year-round central heating and air conditioning.
We were able to perserve the warmth and charm of this mountain get away while still having all the comfort and conveniences of the 21st century!
We are ideally surrounded by state parks in both North and South Carolina which provide many hiking and mountain biking trails with great waterfalls and wilderness vistas. You can escape the feeling of suburbia while still having ready access to shopping and entertainment in nearby Brevard or, a little further away, Asheville NC and Greenville SC.
Or you just walk out the door and hike down the fascinating Jones Gap!
We had a great stay at this beautiful and well appointed home. Great kitchen with everything you will need and more, wonderful beds with high quality bedding and sheets and an absolutely fabulous porch. We spent most of our time there. The porch had a swing and comfortable chairs and was especially alluring at night when it was a little cooler. The home is centrally located to many local attractions including hiking and waterfalls. We plan to return.
Great getaway!! Four couples in all, for four nights at this lovely cabin built in 1939; but has since been renovated. A lot of time spent on roomy porch enjoying the surrounding wooded views. 2 couples had their own en suite bathroom. 3rd spacious bathroom shared by 2 other couples. Kitchen very well equipped with 2 ovens, microwave, coffee maker and large walk-in pantry that stored all kinds of dishes and pots and pans. In short, we lacked for nothing! Easy day trips were taken to Brevard, Asheville, Greenville & quaint Hendersonville. What differentiated this cabin from other cabins, was the care taken with the decor. Loved the rustic charm and vintage feel of the cabin; tastefully decorated.Lots of wonderful books scattered about, but too busy going & visiting to do any reading! Maybe on next visit!
This was our fly fishing groups 2nd time renting "Pentimento". It is such a great place, very comfortable and relaxing. The home is set back from the main road and surrounded by woods, so it's very private. Downtown Brevard is only about 12 miles away. The kitchen is the best equipped rental we've ever been - two ovens, microwave, toaster oven, lots of flatware, pots/pans, dishes, etc. It also has any kitchen tool/utensil you would ever need, and everything is good quality. The beds are very comfortable and the home is very clean, and well-maintained.
Drawbacks? - The front access stairs might seem intimidating at first glance. However, we are in our 60's and 70's and had no real problem. However, I would not recommend this rental for anyone with a serious physical disability.
gorgeous lot. There's a small waterfall steps from the house - magical. Truly a home away from home, with an amazing kitchen equipped to handle Thanksgiving or Christmas with ease. Very cozy and charming! It really felt like a cabin loaned by old friends. Very well stocked with dishes, pots and pans, a Kitchenaid mixer - need I say more? :) State of the art dishwasher, 2 ovens - it was amazing cooking in this kitchen. This is an older cabin, lovingly restored- it instantly felt like home. So close to Dupont state forest, which has well-maintained trails for hiking and gorgeous waterfalls. Brevard is a charming town, only 15 minutes away, and there's an Ingles supermarket for last minute grocery shopping.
We had a wonderful time here and plan to be back! Thank you for your hospitality!
Our family stayed at the property for three nights.
Great house that is situated on a beautiful section of the woods. Tom is very prompt with the booking process and we will be definitely be reserving the home again. Thank you.
We had a fantastic time at Pentimento. The description of the house is point on.
Extremely comfortable home. We loved the huge porch. Wonderful place for a family gathering. Great hiking nearby!
