I've lived in the Custer area for 13 years and am a South Dakota native. After living out of state for 18 years, I returned to South Dakota for a more peaceful life.
Jody Landgrebe Owner/Manager purchased this lodge in 2002
I vacationed in the Custer area as a child, and returned to it because I've found the Custer area to be the perfect blend of rustic country living, beautiful scenery and friendly people. The town of Custer has all the shopping, restaurants and entertainment that anyone could possibly need without the frenzy of fast food, Walmarts and traffic that frazzle city folks lives.
This home is very private so that at the end of the day, I can sit on the front porch and watch the deer in the meadow in front of the house. It's surrounded by National Forest with unlimited opportunities to hike and explore.
Our stay was relaxing and comfortable. The house was warm & spacious, there was a place & room for 3 generations to play & sleep. When we were forced to leave 2 days early due to an oncoming blizzard, Jody the owner was willing to work with us & even gave us a refund.
The property was exactly as advertised. Very pleasant and homey. A nice central location for touring. Jody was very easy to get ahold of and resolved any issue. Would do it again and refer others.
This was a very enjoyable trip. The location of this place is central to everything...Wind Cave, Mt Rushmore, Jewel Cave, etc...We really liked the Nat Forest land around there, it was great to just hike short distances without having to drive there to do it.
The house was roomier than I thought from the web site, plenty of space. The game room and downstairs was ideal for us as we had multiple teens that need that constant entertainment.
A small thing but really appreciated is that all the little things are there....plenty of towels, spices, etc for cooking, enough toilet paper, paper towels...seems trivial but its not always that way.
The locale of being close to Custer was also a perk, when you needed something it was quick-not a long drive.
Something that usually doesn't get mentioned- its not a bad drive to Devils Tower(Close Encounters of the Third Kind-if you've seen the movie). Its actually a great tour-many kinds of scenery and it was also the favorite place to visit for a couple of the kids-we hiked a bit in the rocks to the tower itself.
Oh, and a place worth mentioning if you don't mind a drive to eat...Wooly's down in Hot Springs...food and service were great- and Hot Springs is also a neat little town.
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed staying at Whitetail Meadow and would highly recommend!
We really enjoyed Jody's house! We had 6 adults and 5 children (age 3 through 11) and had plenty of room. The kids loved the bunkhouse and game room, which made it really nice for the adults to have a peaceful upper level! We also had 2 large tables to eat at which also provided ample room to cook for a large group. We loved hanging out in the great room and preparing food in the large kitchen. Our favorite thing was to sit on the porch in the morning with coffee. The house was off the beaten road (we saw lots of deer) but not far at all from Custer. We loved the weather and were glad to escape St. Louis humidity! We were very active through the Black Hills and Custer State Park which was awesome....My only regret was not spending more time relaxing at the house. Would definitely recommend this home to anyone - with kids or without. Jody was extremely kind and helpful through the week for any questions.
We rented the "little cabin" (it was far from being little with over 4,000 square feet) as we called it to celebrate many milestones with our kids and grandkids. Whitetail Meadow was EVERYTHING we could have expected. The description describes the cabin perfectly!! We enjoyed all the space the cabin and property offered. The game room as was hit with everyone! The large table in the dining room was perfect for all 12 of us to enjoy our meals together! We have four grandsons ages 7 years old, 2 years old, 10 months old and 4 months old and the cabin offered space for each family to have alone time and to gather as a family. The master bedroom was beautiful. The claw foot club was a huge hit. We enjoyed all the sites around Custer, Hot Springs, Hill City and Keystone. The hike up the hill behind the barn to see Crazy Horse is very neat (and not to strenuous). I would recommend this cabin to everyone!! Thanks Jody for sharing your "little cabin" with us! Jane, Mark, kids and grandsons, Minnesota
We love staying at the Whitetail Meadows. The master bath is luxurious with its soaking tub and beautiful shower. The master bedroom is large and sunny with views of wildflife, just like the living room, kitchen and dining room have. We love to watch for deer. This literally is "end-of-the-road" as described and offers wonderful walks into the national forest. So much room, and so lovely, we can't say enough about how much we enjoy this property and the care the owner gives to it.
Enjoy the surrounding Black Hills National Forest which surrounds the property with miles of hiking trails, great mountain scenery and rock climbing. Watch the wildlife in the meadow in front of the home and wander through Custer State Park (within 10 minutes) where the buffalo roam and the deer and the antelope play. Where seldom is heard a discouraging work and the skies are not cloudy all day!
