We booked this beautiful, spacious five-bedroom house anticipating that family and friends would join us. As it turned out, my husband and I were the only two that could make the trip. However, it still worked for us because the nightly base rate for a house this size in Hawaii is reasonable. In the end the extra room paid off because we had several friends who live in Hawaii visit for the day and two of them spent the night. We only had to pay a small extra fee for them to stay.
This house is situated in a quiet neighborhood. From our third-story master bedroom we could look over palm trees and a lava field to see the ocean. We snorkeled in the delightfully warm Champagne Pond everyday and ended our day with a champagne toast to the joy of it all.
Although it was very nice just to stroll around the peaceful neighborhood, we could also hike the roads cut into the lava fields out to the shore. The Kapoho Tidepools and Wai'opae Ponds are a one and a half mile drive or walk away with a variety of fish and coral to see.
Pahoa, a quaint little town with a personality, is only a 15-20 minute drive away through mini-environments of lava, grasses, papaya groves and a vine-draped forest. There are several good restaurants from which to choose.
We were hesitant to stay on the "wet" Hilo side of the big island so booked our second week on the Kona side. It worked out well for us. We enjoyed the contrast of flora and fauna, weather patterns, local flavor and pace of life.
Our contact person, Sophia, was always friendly, helpful and informative. So easy to work with. I would recommend her to anyone looking for accommodations in this area. Thanks, Sophia!
We really enjoyed snorkeling in the champagne pond and having dinner outside each night. I will miss falling asleep to the sounds of the frogs and the cool ocean breezes. We enjoyed ourselves so much we've already booked our next vacation. Sophia was very helpful. Even around the holidays she was always there to answer any questions we had.
We booked this property based off advertisement in the listing and reviews. we booked for 4 nights and only stayed for half a night. when we checked in the downstairs unit had a very bad moldy smell from a mattress being wet. part of the bed was left outside to dry while the rest of the room was in shambles. when we got to the second and third floor the nightmare continued. the furniture was filthy with food under all cushions. the coffee table had broken sharp edges all over it which was not suitable for the kids we had with us. the ceiling fans barley worked. floors left our feet black within minutes of walking around. bugs all over the place inside. sand and dirt in the bedroom and kitchen drawers. we now questioned the cleanliness of the entire place. no access to the ponds they say they are so close too. the 2 access points we found had danger don't use signs on them and 1 of the paths no longer existed. we got to the house around 3 or 4 pm and left at 10pm. we had 3 little kids with us including a 3 month old. the pack and play was broke and unsafe for use. we were forced to pack up and drive into hilo and find last minute accommodations on memorial day weekend adding a big expense to the trip. once our trip was over we took out complaints to the booking agent and told them we wanted a refund. it took over a week to get the owners to respond. they only responded after we told them were were going to depute the charge with the credit card company. the gave us a partial refund. the never refunded the cleaning fee or the damage waiver fee. we gave up at this point. i will never stay in this house again period. not even for free. the overall condition of the house was poor and looked as if the bare minimum is done to keep it going. it needs a lot of work. this property was booked for 2 families with a total of 4 adults and 3 little ones all under 3.
Kapaho Bay View was perfect for us. We had our four kids, plus my brother and mom, and the house accommodated us perfectly. One big bonus was having four bathrooms so we had plenty of bathroom space to get ready in the morning for our adventures.
We had a lovely song bird that would wake us up before the sun every morning. He was so excited he even woke the roosters up! That allowed us to make breakfast and eat on the patio each day, which was wonderful.
Champagne Pond was about a five minute walk away, and that was fantastic. Once the kids started swimming there, it was almost impossible to get them out!
I highly recommend this property to anyone who has similar needs to what we had. Thanks to Sophia for helping make this a great experience!
It is a beautiful house, and close to a great snorkeling experience for all ages and experience levels. Champagne Pond is amazing! This vacation brought my kids' first snorkeling experience, so the calm, warm waters of the Pond, and the way it is protected from the surf, allowed me to let them swim on their own as I explored the Pond myself, not feeling like I had to be connected at their hip! The location of the house is close to Hilo, Pahoa, Kea'au, Glenwood, Akaka Falls, Volcano, and the list goes on and on. Unfortunately, the house was lacking in some basic amenities that prevent me from giving it 5 stars. Our family booked the upper level of the house - traveling with an 18 year old daughter and 12 year old son, I wanted plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for all. My husband and I discovered the Suite upstairs lacked a door. Ummm, kind of required on a master suite. The BBQ on the Lanai was filthy - we wouldn't even touch it! The kitchen had plenty of dull steak knives, but not one paring knife for fruit and veggies so I used my Swiss Army knife - good thing I threw that in my suitcase. There was a coffee pot - no filters - so the first morning's coffee required a paper towel for a filter then a trip to Longs. I bought filters and left them there - so you're welcome to the next guests. ;) The refrigerator door really wanted to stay open, so I'd find myself cooking, turn around, and see that despite my "closing" the door, it was still open a crack so I had to learn to remedy that. We spent most of our time exploring that side of the island, but on the rare occasions that we were gathering in the living room (during quiet hours), the lack of seating, and discomfort of the couches that were there, was disappointing. None of these factors ruined our vacation, it just left me a bit frustrated. After staying in a condo in Puako that met and exceeded our expectations, I was "meah" about this house. It is beautiful and a great location to experience the Hilo side of the island - that is why we were there. Not to sit in a house. BTW the best pizza in Pahoa is NY Style - not Boogie's ;) and make sure you stop in Glenwood, Hirano Store, for the red hot dogs; that is, when you're not eating Huli-huli chicken and Kalua Pork! Then again - opinions are just that!
Our family stayed for 3 nights at the Kapoho Bay View home for Easter weekend The house was an ideal set up for my husband and I along with our 3 young adult children and 2 elementary age boys! We spend a lot of time together on the beautiful large lanai and appreciated the large space indoors to gather as a group as well! Our oldest two boys who had the bottom floor all to themselves loved their "bachelor pad"! The remaining three had plenty of room on the 2nd floor and in the evening my husband and I were able to go up to the 3rd floor and feel completely alone for a while as we enjoyed the master suite, the Jacuzzi tub and private lanai with all the kids tucked in happily below.
