Overview

Northern Michigan Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom, 1 full bathroom, sleeps 6

Our cozy family cottage has 100' of private waterfront on beautiful Torch Lake. The cottage has housed our family visits to Torch Lake for generations, and we'd like to share our little escape with others. Torch Lake is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world and with one look into the crystal clear blue water you'll see why. We are fortunate to have a very gradual increase in depth for several hundred feet out into the water, creating a striking sight where the drop-offs signal the deeper blue depths of Torch. We have a dock that extends almost 90' out to the lake, with a 12'x12' platform at the end for enjoying some time in the sun. At the end of the dock it's not even 3' deep! Just down the road is the Torch River Bridge, near the famous Torch Lake Sandbar and Torch River. Just across the lake is the town of Alden.

We're making frequent updates to the cottage and the property. In 2009 we made significant renovations, completely modernizing the kitchen, bathroom, and living areas (but taking care to retain the old cottage look and feel). In 2014, a clothes dryer and mooring anchor were added. And in 2015, we rebuilt the stone wall on the lakeshore and added sand to our small beach area out front.

Golf Information: There are a number of top golf courses in the area, including designs by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Gary Player. Some of the more popular locations include Shanty Creek Resorts with 'The Legend', designed by Arnold Palmer, as well as 3 other courses and Grand Traverse Resort & Spa with 'The Bear' by Jack Nicklaus and 'The Wolverine' by Gary Player.

Boating Information: Torch Lake is a great place to water-ski, go tubing, and do all sorts of other water sports. We have a 90'' long dock that can be used to access boats, although the water is still shallow at the end! Public accesses are close by. We have a mooring anchor that can be used, and local nearby marinas also offer overnight slip and trailered storage options that our guests have used.

Area Festivals: Harbor Days --- Interlochen Summer Arts Festival --- Petoskey Festival on the Bay --- Suttons Bay Art Festival --- Northport-Leelanau Peninsula Wine And Food Festival --- Suttons Bay Jazzfest --- Charlevoix Venetian Festival --- just to name a few!!

About Brett

I've been going to the cottage since I was 6 months old, and spent entire summers there growing up. I am no longer able to spend such long periods of time at the lake, but the cottage and surrounding area have a very special place in my life, and hopefully will in my children's lives as well. The swimming, boating, campfires, exploring, wildlife, and nonstop summer activities all around the area can keep you busy all day every day!

Brett purchased this cottage in 1936

Why Brett chose Northern Michigan

My great-great-aunt built the cottage in 1936 and our family has visited every year since. It's been our little slice of heaven! After completing some VERY significant remodeling work in 2009, including a completely new kitchen, new bathroom, refinished wood floors, new electrical work, and so much more, we decided to make the cottage available for rent, to share our escape with others.

What makes this cottage unique

There are two amazing experiences every time we go to the cottage. First, driving over Torch River Bridge and seeing the lake for the first time that year. The sight of the seemingly infinite shades of blue sparkling water is breathtaking. Second, when arriving at the cottage, the scent of the pine trees that surround the property. My wife has said that the view from the kitchen window (of the lake immediately in front of the cottage) almost makes you WANT to do the dishes! There is so much to do in the area that it was my own personal summer camp growing up (fishing, swimming, boating, hiking...). The area towns are great places to visit, and there are many great restaurants as well. We now have a long drive each summer to make it to the cottage (about 15 hours) but wouldn't miss it for the world. Our kids love it and don't stop talking about it year-round!

Wonderful Vacation on Torch Lake!

  • 5 of 5

Our first vacation on Torch Lake was wonderful! The cabin was very lovely and we really felt at home. On our first day we were greeted by a Mallard Duck who visited us at least twice a day and took naps on the dock. The cabin is close to many attractions yet still very private. We took our boat to Bellaire Lake then on to Grass River, Clam Lake and then back into Torch Lake. It was a beautiful ride. Took a trip to Traverse City and out to the scenic areas of Peninsula/Old Mission. We would definitely recommend this place. The cabin was clean, the maintenance personnel were extremely helpful and quick to respond to any questions/problems we had. We're hoping to make it back up next Summer 2017!

Beautiful peaceful cottage

  • 5 of 5

My family of five had a wonderful stay at the cottage. The owner was very trustworthy and kind. We found the cottage to be clean and comfortable. We spent 8 days there. I would have enjoyed spending all summer. The cottage sits very near the lake. At night with the windows up I could hear the water lapping against the shore which was very relaxing. The color of the lake caught me by surprise as it is a very beautiful blue color. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a classic style cottage. The open concept, wood interior and rock fireplace reminded me of the cottage in the movie On Golden Pond. We enjoyed spending time at the dunes, downtown Traverse city (cool shops and places to eat) and seeing the lighthouse at Mission Point. If you are looking for a classic style cottage, on a large beautiful lake that has fun local things to explore I would recommend you consider this one.

The Perfect Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

This cottage took our breath away the moment we walked through the door. From the wood-paneled walls down to the skeleton keys for the doors, we fell in love with this quaint, homey cottage instantly. The back deck and fire pit area were absolutely perfect for watching the boats whir by and the moon rise. The small beach area was an extra bonus and provided beautiful rocks and shells for souvenirs. Even though our rental boat couldn't be tied to the actual dock but rather a mooring instead, we enjoyed wading into the beautiful clear water from the dock steps to retrieve it. Cottage is not too far from the sandbar, but definitely far enough & just a boat ride across the lake to Alden. The managers were friendly and easy to get in touch with during our stay and the coffee/muffins that greeted us on day one were such a nice personal touch. Our daughter called this quaint cottage a "writers paradise". The only items that would make this rental even better would be a few "water toys"...kayaks, paddle boards, canoe...but overall, this was a wonderful stay & vacation.

Lovely quaint cottage on stunning Torch Lake

  • 5 of 5

We loved both the cottage and the area so much that we asked to stay an additional night. The cottage is as described, nicely organized and amply supplied with everything you need in a vacation home. We spent a substantial amount of time on the dock and also enjoyed the little beach area. The back porch, picnic table and fire pit gave us plenty of options to enjoy the outside both day and evening. It's a great jumping off spot for day trips up the peninsulas, Sleeping Bear Dunes and Traverse City. Close to home you have the interesting little towns of Alden and Elk Rapids, good food and eclectic shopping. We appreciated arriving to the muffins and coffee and both the owner and manager were at the ready for anything we needed. There's plenty to do in the area yet the cottage and water are so peaceful, our biggest decision was whether to go on more day trips or enjoy the peace and quiet in that beautiful setting.

Amazing view and an adorable cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had such an amazing time on Torch Lake. The manager was very friendly and easy to get hold of. We would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone wanting to stay on Torch Lake. It has a beautiful view of the lake and is close to many attractions and restaurants. Pearls has to be one of the most amazing restaurants we have ever been to. The atmosphere is warm and the food is delicious. Thank you again for an amazing stay we will be back soon!

Notes:
Brand new kitchen! Completely renovated 2009. All wood floors in the kitchen/main room have been refinished. All new kitchen cabinets, large kitchen island with seating, and counter tops. All new appliances: range, microwave, and fridge. New sink & fixtures. Cabinets and island were installed with very custom & professional wood trim work. We accomplished a lot that year (new kitchen, new bathroom, painted outside, refinished floors, new furnishings, etc). We've spent a lot of time and effort to modernize the property and make it a fantastic getaway destination. Everything was done with the highest care for quality craftsmanship and it shows!! We also have a private dock (almost 90' long!) right outside our front door with a large 12'x12' platform at the end. Note: Fireplace is not to be used at this time. Mooring anchor available and local overnight boat dockage nearby.
