We loved the lani, especially at sunset. I wish we could take the warm breezes and beautiful scenery home with us! Being able to walk to the water for snorkeling was fantastic.
I loved hearing the frogs @ night... so peaceful! Perfect home for two families to share! As Jeff Probst would say, "Survivors ready? GO!"
Everything described in the listing, the reviews on VRBO, and info in the manager's emails were accurate and we had no surprises. Read the reviews and descriptions as they are all spot-on! The home had not been used in a few days so the evening we arrived the house was extremely hot and it took most of the night with open windows & high fans to cool down enough to sleep. After that first night, the temperature moderated and it was a perfect tropical-comfort the whole trip. Champagne Pond is a must and we visited several times. Evening stargazing is a must on either balcony....spectacular. Volcano National Park and Hilo both accessible in 50 minutes on scenic, two-lane roads. The roundabout in Pahoa was under long-term construction and while this never actually slowed us down, there were times we saw the one-lane traffic into Pahoa was backed up for miles (evening rush hour out of Hilo towards Pahoa looked to be the peek traffic time). The neighbors were wonderful & friendly. We debated as to whether we needed the ground floor space so I am adding this info which would have been helpful: with 5 in our family we did not need the ground floor as much as we thought we would. The kids used it as a game room but everyone slept on the upper 2 levels with no need for the ground floor bedrooms. Top floor has a room with a queen bed, middle floor has 2 rooms each with one queen bed. If you need more rooms/beds consider renting the ground floor too but our family of 5 all slept on the top & middle floors and the kids used the ground floor as a game room. It is as remote, as secluded and as lovely as the listing and the reviews say it is. Wonderful family visit!
The woman who manages the property, Sophia, is super responsive and wonderful.
The woman who does the cleaning is as kind as can be (you can also leave her your left over groceries, we didn't realize to do that and wish we had known). And, yes, she does a very thorough job cleaning.
The house is fabulous..... spacious, high end finishes, and nicely equipped for cooking, etc.
We loved the wonderful breezes that flow through the house!, the amazing view of the ocean, sunrises, and rainbows from the spacious lanai!, the super short walk to Champagne Pond (volcanic heated thermal pond)!, and the trail that takes you down to lava rocks above the ocean waves! Air travels 2 weeks over open ocean to reach the eastern point of the Big Island, and as such, is considered the freshest air in the world.... people around the world collect this air as a benchmark to compare their air to.
Kapoho is the sunny part of the east side (compared to Hilo) and a really nice place to stay to explore that side of the island. On this side we enjoyed Champagne Pond, the Maku'u Farmer's Market (and the man at the far end who uses a machete to open a coconut for drinking coconut water, and tells jokes too), driving the red Road, laid back Pahoa, hiking in Volcano National Park/ the Kilauea Iki Trail, Akaka Falls, and Mauna Kea for hiking and viewing night skies. We didn't make it to Waipio Valley or the Kapoho Tide Pools, but hope to some day.
Wonderful home to just relax in, or to have as a home base for exploring the eastern side of the island....
Perfect location, perfect view, and great acommodations. Cooking equipment was adequate.
The place is every bit as nice as advertised and Sophia was very helpful and accommodating. You should never go to the big island without seeing this side of the island. You should spend a day exploring the volcano, a day at the Hilo farmers market and at wai'Opae tide pools, and a day at waipio valley. I have been to all of the islands and Hilo has the best farmers market of all. We snorkeled captain cook, Mauna lani resort and wai'opea tide pools. We loved them all, but actually liked the tide pools the best. You must go near high tide and you will see the best fish if you swim out a little farther. We never got anywhere close to the crashing waves, but saw tons of fish. If you are reasonably in shape, you should hike down into waipio valley. There is a 1400 waterfall to the left, after you get to the bottom, and to the right is a black sand beach. If you boulder hop on the south end of the beach, you will get to a waterfall pouring into the ocean. On the way to waipio valley, don't miss Hawaii tropical botanical garden and Akaka falls. The botanical garden is the best botanical garden that I have ever seen. As soon as I got off the plane, I took the kids to see rainbow falls and pe'e pe'e falls in downtown Hilo. The kids loved it and it took all of 5 minutes. Ate at cafe pesto and Ken's pancakes in Hilo, loved them both. Went to pahoa fresh fish in pahoa. This place looks like a dive, but I loved the fish and chips. You get a choice of mahi- mahi, ahi, ono or swordfish. Hawaii is enchanting and is my favorite island. Next time I go back, I will spend 4 days on each side of the island. Do not try to drive back and forth across the island more than once. It takes 2.5 hours each way.
We had great time at this house. The property manager was amazing, she always had a smile on her face. The walk to the tide pools made for relaxing days, and a warm treat at the end of the day. The turtles in this area were amazing.
We have stayed in just about all Sophia's properties and have had no complaints. The houses are beautiful and well stocked. All you need is groceries and you're all set. Sophia will address any issues you have and get them resolved quickly . The area is quiet so don't expect a lot to see but if you're looking for piece and quiet you have it. Rental car a must. Getting across the island is easy and Kona has all the tourism you need.
