Secluded high on a mountainside and surrounded by thousands of acres of state park and conservation land, The Pod is a rustic early 1970's timber and glass octagon set on a concrete pedestal. Decks on four sides with forest or distant mountain views. One stream runs within 15 feet of the master bedroom, a second is about 100 yards from the house. Our closest neighbor's home is about 150 yards away and invisible through the woods; there are very few homes in the area.
Trails on property connect to South Taconic Trail.

We live in New York City. When our kids were old enough to ski, we found the Berkshires to be perfect: easy/pleasant 2.5 drive, nice little ski mountains, natural beauty, lots of fine extra-curricular activities, and, as it was off-season for the area, we could rent a good house for the whole season for the cost of a week at a Vermont resort.___
After a few years of renting we started look for something to buy. The Pod was a magical find for us.___
We were looking for a modest home on great piece of land and the Pod more than hit the mark. As fans of mid-century architecture, this was a truly unique, modern home.___
Pre-fab from the late-sixties/early-seventies, the Pod was built by a New York fashion person. She had really great taste and color sense. She had "aged" out of the property and we got the house complete with its contents, many of which are still present.___
The kids are grown up now but we still get up there as often as we can to ski in winter. Spring and Fall we enjoy the area and do projects -- we only rent the house out in summer. The first few years it was catching up on "deferred maintenance" and restoration, but these days it's improvements, mostly landscaping.___
We're glad to able to share it with our summer guests.
My 7-year-old grandson, my golden retriever and I spent a week in the treehouse in August. This is a very cool property. The house has a wonderful view of the sun rising over the mountains and through the trees. The house is all glass, but you are surrounded by trees and the sounds of the woods including the brook that runs beside the master bedroom. You feel secluded, but it's also close to Great Barrington and all that the Berkshires offer, including Tanglewood.
The property is represented accurately. It looks exactly the way it is pictured and the owners are very accessible and involved in ensuring that renters have a good visit. My grandson loved making a campfire in the fire-pit on the patio. We grilled corn, hot dogs and s'mores and dined on the patio but we also relied on the owner's list of things to do and places to eat and enjoyed their suggestions.
The stairs/steps leading up to the house should be considered by anyone with mobility issues - but were only slightly challenging when we were moving in and out of the house. Cars are parked in an area at the end of the drive into the property, but from there it's a bit of a hike up to the house. My dog loved running up and down the long steps leading up to the house and quickly became comfortable with the open steps leading into the house. The steps were easily lit as was the outside of the house.
I would definitely recommend the property to anyone looking for a serene spot in a great location.
After spending a week at the "pod" house, it was difficult to leave. The cabin is small but it is perfectly laid out, and every room is walled with windows in such a way that you feel beautifully immersed in the forest. It's a special place to be, and one I really enjoyed living in. I'm a writer, so I wished there was a bigger table or more of a desk space with more ergonomic chairs, but I actually ended up working mostly on the couch. Unfortunately, it faced inside (toward the woodstove, probably essential in the winter) and not toward the beautiful views outside. But that doesn't take away the fact that there were beautiful views outside. And also beautiful listening: to the owls especially, at night, late summer. I loved waking up in the morning and feeling immersed in the forest, listening to and watching the birds as if from a tree house. Having both the Weber grill and the dishwasher was a lovely plus, even if there was no air conditioning--the kitchen is very thoughtfully composed. The only other downside I could mention is that hiking/walking is not quite as accessible as one might think, though it's an easy drive to some lovely places. The rent is quite expensive for my income, so for me it was a splurge, but if I could afford it, I would return for sure. This is a lovely and singular place!
The tree house is a work of art both inside and out. We had privacy yet were close to restaurants; grocery stores etc and all the good things the Berkshires has to offer. The house is accurately represented, however, it looks better in person. So Zen. The owners are an absolute pleasure, thoughtful, organized and very responsive. There is a list of people that can be contacted in case we should have needed anything..which we did not. It's footage on paper may seem relatively small...yet once in...it feels beautifully spacious. The pod is Immaculate. It's simple yet stylish. Comfortable. The beds are comfy. Everything needed is provided with thoughtfully placed touches of luxury.
My husband and two 11 year olds went with our dog and had plenty of room. This a special place, it gave us an opportunity to get back in touch with nature and leave the chaos of the rat race behind. Each morning, we awoke and each evening we went to bed with the view of tree tops, the singing of birds and the sweet gurgling of a sweet stream just feet away from the bedrooms. Absolutely enthralling.
We enrolled our children at Hi Rock Camp for two weeks...an idea I got from a previous reviewer...which they loved! While our children were busy canoeing and horseback riding, my husband and I got to spend time relaxing. The internet service is fast and reliable - the GB's are limited yet within reason for regular internet use. For my husband and I...that was the best part...being able to spend our time with our family without the lure of the usual distractions.
To the owners, thank you for your lovely hospitality and for sharing your unique & amazing home with us! We hope very much to return.
We would return to the Pod House in a heartbeat. It was a perfect summer getaway, set up high in the woods with a picture perfect postcard view of the distant mountain range. It's a quick drive to Great Barrington and the other wonderful Berkshire destinations, and just down the road from swimming and hiking in the state parks. The house is special, has everything you could need, and the owners are super helpful with great recommendations for places to explore and excellent restaurants in the area. My husband, two boys and I were only there one week, but it felt like a longer stay. Very relaxing!
The pod house made for a incredibly relaxing get away, but when we wanted to go hiking, shopping or driving around the beautiful Berkshires all we wanted was accessible. The house is wonderful, fully stocked with anything a couple or a family would want. Even in July we needed to take the evening chill off, so the wood stove and fire pit were most welcome. You really don't have to leave the pod house. You may not want to once you settle in! The view is breath taking. There is a small stream right outside the bedrooms and off the back deck that is mesmerizing. Our week there could not have been better. We will be back and hope you will consider renting the pod house, too. Oh, and the owners were a pleasure.
We stayed here for two weeks in July while my kids attended day camp at Hi-Rock. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, found it to be clean, well-organized and had everything we needed. Beds were comfortable and dressed with fresh smelling cotton sheets. The house is ideally nestled into a hillside with valley views that frame the sunrise. The wraparound terrace is a perfect place to sit and enjoy the view but there is also a back patio for the afternoon sun. Lying in bed at night with the wall to ceiling windows is like sleeping in front of a diorama. It is an excellent base to kayak, hike, shop, swim and spa. I did all of that but would have been content to just sit and enjoy the view.
