On the western shore of a private peninsula, this one bedroom cottage is the perfect place to get away from it all and relax. Surrounded by conservation land, the area abounds with wildlife.
There is a hiking trail along water's edge and also kayaks or a canoe for rent to explore the waterways.
The cottage has the warmth of wood floors, wood beamed ceilings and comfortable furnishings to add to your relaxation. The screened in porch makes a great place to watch the sun setting over the water.
There is a queen size bed in the bedroom. Additionally, the couch in the living room converts to a bed for additional sleeping accommodations.

The kitchen is complete with full size refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster and coffee pot not to mention all the pots, pans, dishes and utensils you will need. If you enjoy to BBQ there is a grill just outside the front door. For lobster lovers we have a large pot available for you to cook them fresh in your cottage.
The Midcoast area of Maine is known for its miles of white sandy beaches and Lobster wharfs where you can enjoy their famous lobster dinners on the dock as you watch the lobstermen bringing in their catch for the day. What makes the midcoast so appealing is the fact that you get to enjoy all this without the crowds. You will love the slower pace of life and the pristine beauty of this untouched area.
We, Sam and Ruth Francis, are the owners and hosts of eight rental properties in Georgetown, Maine. We have four wonderful grown sons and are proud grandparents. We worked for years to finish our timber frame dream home at the tip of the peninsula. We now enjoy our role as pastors to a growing church in Bath, Maine.
Ruth Francis purchased this cottage in 2000
We purchased this unique fifty acre property with its half mile long peninsula over thirty years ago. Since then we have lived here and operated a traditional wooden boat shop. Over the years we have built six charming cottages, as well as, converted a Sailor's Loft to a rental with breathtaking, panoramic views. We also, offer the home that we first built and lived in to renters, with it's ideal location at the tip of the peninsula with deep water frontage and a private dock. We have added other touches to our property with a garden house, ten slip boat dock, a hiking trail and clearings for fishing and picnics.
The cottages are situated to allow privacy but also to maintain the quality of the open, natural spaces. Each cottage overlooks the marsh and adjacent Back River which flows off the mighty Kennebec and Nature Conservancy land beyond.
I've vacationed in Maine many many times. This was the first time I stayed on Back River Bend and I will be back.
I can't tell you how many times one of us said " this place is perfect". It was so quiet that at times the pine needles falling and hitting the leaves of other trees sounded like soft rain. Wildlife abounds, during the course of our stay we spotted a bald eagle, a seal, whitetail deer, loons, other diving water birds and many other animals, all from the serenity of the screen porch.
Georgetown Island is centrally located about mid coast Maine. Making it an ideal location for our day trips via motorcycle. By far my favorite day of our stay was spent on the island. There is plenty to do without leaving the quiet of Georgetown. There are two lighthouses on the island, the light at Squirrel Point is a pleasant hike from the dirt road, a definite hidden gem. The Restaurant at Robinhood is delicious and the prettiest view you can imagine. Reid State Park is a gem, the proprietor at Back River Bend supplied a state park pass that gets you into the parks for free. The village of Five Islands is so charming as is the Five Islands Lobster Company restaurant, with delicious fresh seafood and ice cream.
Georgetown Pottery is worth a stop for a memento of your stay. Being we were on motorcycles we didn't have room to take our purchases with us but they shipped them for us for a small fee.
We could have spent a few days just exploring Georgetown Island.
Plenty of Maine tourist attractions are within a short drive.
The cabin is very clean and comfortable. A great place for two. Soooooo, peaceful and quiet! We had one minor problem with the stove but it was fixed promptly.
There is a working marina on the property which is a good way to observe a real taste of Maine. The docks and trails on the property are all accessible to guests and provide plenty of photo opportunities.
Ruth and Sam are very friendly, but also are polite enough to allow you to enjoy your solitude if you like.
Whether you're looking for a base from which to enjoy all of mid coast Maine's popular attractions or you're looking for a place to relax and unwind in quiet solitude, Back River Bend is perfect!
My only complaint about my stay at Sasanoa Cottage is that I had to leave!
Thanks so much to our hosts for sharing this little slice of paradise. We'll be back!
Cottage was clean and had beautiful view of the Back river from the screened porch to watch the tides change and the boats come and go. All the basics needed as a base of operations to see the sights of mid coast of Maine.
My husband and I stayed at the Sasanoa cabin for our wedding anniversary. We brought the two dogs with us, which was great. We had an awesome time! Ruth and Sam were very accommodating, helpful and friendly. The grounds there are beautiful and quiet. You can see seals swim by in the river behind the cabin - so cool! Don't forget to bring bug spray, as there are lots of mosquitoes in the area. There's lots to see and do nearby - Ruth leaves a pass for the beach. There's a nearby restaurant, Five Islands, that serves an amazing lobster roll and you can bring your dogs with you and sit outside and eat. Maine is a very dog-friendly state! We ended up going into Portland, which is only about 40 minutes away and caught a Whale Watch. We also went to see the Buddy Holly show at the local theater in Brunswick - it was fantastic!!! There's a good balance here - lots to keep you busy and lots of opportunity for relaxation. We did a little of both. We will most definitely come back. Thanks so much Ruth & Sam! - Jen & Jimmy
The perfect place to spend a few days together after 33 years... The cottage is well furnished. Location is secluded but within a few miles of activities. The kindness of the owners adds to the natural charm of the place. I have recommended this property to friends.
What great host's. The BEST customer service I have ever had. The location, the area, restaurants, farmers markets, art gallery's all great. Ruth and her husband become long lost friends. Great people make a great vacation. I will recommend and return to this wonderland.
We have had a week in Maine for the last 5 years that is so incredibly relaxing. Ruth and Sam Francis make sure your cabin is complete with everything you might need for a comfy visit. A great help is their guest book with excellent entries from past visitors giving you suggested sites to see. We have seen most of the suggested sites now.
But if all you want to do is catch up on some great reading and rest time,- there are two fantastic state parks with excellent beaches. Best of all - Ruth and Sam provide you with a free pass while you are visiting. Morning or evening strolls - day long beach visits - all at your fingertips.
I looked at many many websites before choosing Back River Bend for my Maine vacation. Their web site was EXACTLY like what you will see when you arrive. Such a peaceful pleasant visit. Going back again in 2014 with an extended family this time! A little piece of heaven.
Within 15 minute drive to: Reid State Park, known for its uncrowded sandy beaches and rocky cliffs, Five Islands Seafood, known for their shore dinners and lobster rolls served dock side in one of Maine's most picturesque harbors, Maine Maritime Museum, housing local marine artifacts dating back to 1607, and antiquing, over 25 shops within a short drive. There is a hiking trail at water's edge and a nearby deep water dock for fishing, swimming or to tie up your own boat.
