Huddleston Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Sleeps 6, 3 bedrooms, private dock, Ideal for Reunions

The Cedar Cabin at Silver Bay View Cottages offers grand and spectacular views of the lake and Smith Mountain in a quiet, private setting populated with beautiful Loblolly pines and sweeping lawns. A private deep-water dock offers easy access for boating, swimming and sunbathing. The cabin is located on a point that marks the entry to Witcher Creek, one of the best fishing areas on the lake. Between the Cedar Cabin and the Main House, the Point offers a combined capacity of up to 16 people, making it the ideal location for family reunions. We can accommodate up to 24 people between four properties that include the Main House, the Cedar Cabin and Cabins 1 and 2 that are a 3 minute walk away. Be sure and check out these other properties as well.

Swimming: There is nothing more enjoyable than to stretch out on the dock with a good book, and then dive into the clear, warm water for a refreshing swim. The lake is one of the cleanest in the East Coast and as you swim or relax, you can look across to undeveloped wilderness.

Hot Tub: The 7' 8' Hot Tub accommodates up to 6 people with views of the lake and mountains.

Boating: There may be no better lake in the Mid-Atlantic region for boating. The 20,000 acres of Smith Mountain Lake and its 40-mile length make it a perfect place for water skiing, speed boating, canoeing, kayaking or sailing. Power boats and wave runners can be rented at several locations on the lake, including: Bridgewater Plaza Marina (Boats can also be picked up at the State Park), Parrot Cove (Parrot Cove also rents Kayaks), Parkway Marina (formerly knows as Saunders Marina), Mitchell's Point Marina or Virgil Naff Sea Doo (wave runners only). The closest boat launch and boat rental is Mitchell's Point Marina.

Fishing: Fishing opportunities at Silver Bay View Cottages are unbelievable. The properties are located on Witcher Creek where the stripers spawn every spring. The lake is regularly stocked with game fish, and contains striped bass, large and small mouth bass, muskies, northern pike, and an assortment of small game fish. Fishing guides are available to introduce you to the lake, including: Captain Bert's Fishin' Charters, Mike's Striper Guide Service, Rockfish Adventures.

Jim Erler, Manager LakeAway Vacation Rentals purchased this cabin in 2002

Why Jim Erler, Manager LakeAway Vacation Rentals chose Smith Mountain Lake

The Erlers purchased Cabin 1 in 1993 and began offering it as a rental a few years later. As the rental business grew, they purchased Cabin 2 and soon learned that there was a desparate need for accomdations large enough for reunions. When the Main House and Cedar Cabin became available in 2002, they purchased them and began major rennovations to prepare them for large reunions. Since 2003 Silver Bay has been a first choice on Smith Mountain Lake for reunions.

What makes this cabin unique

The Cedar Cabin is at the Point View location and offers lovely vistas of Smith Mountain Lake. It is the largest of the open beam cedar cabins, capable of accommodating up to 6 overnight guests.

Charming Lake Cabin

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful lake vacation at Cedar Cabin! The cabin is cozy and well appointed with nice appliances and comfy furniture. The beds were comfortable and it is so quiet and dark at night! The deck is very large and lovely for outdoor meals or just watching the boats. The lake is very clean for swimming, and you can fish right off the dock for little panfish. The hill to the dock is quite steep so be ready for a leg workout! This was a great introduction for us to the charm of Smith Mountain Lake and we hope to return soon! Thank you Mr. and Mrs. E.!

Would not rent again.

  • 1 of 5

We have extended family and thought we found perfect location at SML, a house owner with 4 vacation homes all located together for larger families . I like the Golden Rule of not having anything nice to say then say nothing, but like most of you we always check out these reviews before booking vacation homes. I have also posted a review for the Main House plus we rented this Cedar Cabin. I had no contact with the house owner, so I'm only posting what we found the conditions of the cabin to be.

First thing we did on arrival was to sweep the floor, dirty with dust and dog hair. The vacuum bag was full so it didn't pick up and smelled. The house is dark, to point we took lamp shades off to get more lighting and the blubs kept burning out. Next day went to store to buy cleaning supplies and extra light bulbs which we had to be used during our stay. The bed/ mattress in master bedroom was not comfortable at all.

The week we were there we dealt with low water pressure the entire week. We could not take showers, wash clothes and dishes at times. It happen at both houses, so not sure if that was a lake area issue or house system issues. We never heard from home owner one way or other and he lives next to Main House. At that point , It is what it is.....and we made the best of it and not let issues interfere with together time and fun at the lake.

There are no stairs going down a very steep hill to the dock, not even a pathway. We would walk over to Main House where they at least have stairs, but no handrail to hold onto to get to dock. Good thing we are related to the people renting the Main House! There are no lights on the deck if you like to boat at night.

The internet connection was down often, not good with teenagers and rain storms. We found out 5 houses share one modem that was located in another house. The Hot Tub was the best part of the house.

We enjoyed our family and SML but will look for a different home to book next year. If the owners did some improvements, it could be a good place to rent.

Owner's Response: The welcome sheet advises guests to contact us immediately should there be any problem when they arrive or during their stay. Unless we are informed of a problem we can neither confirm that the problem existed nor are we able to address it. Furthermore, this reviewer did not stay in the Cedar Cabin, although members of his party did. Dirty Floor/Light bulbs/Vacuum bag/Bed: We were never informed of any of these issues and this is the first we have heard from any guest regarding the bed. Comfortable beds are very important. My wife and I checked the bed and found it to be firm and comfortable. We have found that firm (not hard) mattresses are preferred by most people, but not all. Low Water Pressure The guests never contacted us nor mentioned low water pressure when I met them. If they had informed us of the problem it could have been resolved immediately. Access to the dock at the Cedar Cabin and night lighting: The grass slope to the dock is more gentle at the Cedar Cabin than at the neighboring Main House. We have asked many of our guests over the years whether they would prefer steps or the grass slope, and the grass slope is preferred. If opinions change, we will certainly consider installing steps or a winding path. As stated on the web site, electricity is not available at the dock without an extension cord from the cabin. Without electricity, night lighting is not possible. Internet The guest is confused. Our Internet service connection does NOT serve five homes. However, while we have the fastest Internet service available, it is provided by a fixed wireless (i.e. microwave) ISP that slows down significantly during peak usage. During these times the entire system slows down. To address this, the provider asks their customers to minimize streaming audio and video, and charges extra fees for excessive data usage. Most of the time download speeds are adequate for normal business use and even streaming. This guest was angry because we encourage guests not to stream video, and he needed to stream for work. I told him to feel free to use the Internet as he needed. It was not an issue.

Cozy, Quiet and No Complaints

  • 4 of 5

It was a very good get away or time spent with family. Did without the electronic gadgets even though it was hard for the kids. It is a country/lake surrounding and wifi can be challenging. Spent more time being active on the lake with paddle boarding, boating, fishing, tubing, jet skiing, and swimming. Owner provided good customer service i.e. servicing the hot tub and yard maintenance. I would recommend this property.

Stunning

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was just what we needed for a relaxing week. The cabin is beautiful and the views are phenomenal, in addition the stars at night and the sunset can be viewed from the living room. We enjoyed our time and learned a lot about the area and were able to travel with our dogs which helped to make the trip even more enjoyable.

Great cabin on the lake

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the cabin. It was exactly as described - plenty of room, clean, fantastic hot tub with an amazing view (and very easy to use), plenty of afternoon sun exposure... Jim - you were a great host! I so enjoyed meeting you. You went above and beyond, and we really enjoyed the ride in your boat! The weather wasn't 'hot-ski-sun-boating' while we were there, but we enjoyed the hot tub, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and hiking in the nearby State Park. It was a super-relaxing part of our vacation. Jim was very helpful before and during our trip. He even skyped with me before-hand to give me an idea of driving directions and things to do in the area. I would definitely recommend this cabin and hope that life brings my path that way again. Jim - if you and your wife ever come our way, I hope you'll drop me a line!

The cabin is very well maintained and the view is beautiful.

  • 5 of 5

We had an overall 5 star experience at this cabin. Most of our stay was outdoors enjoying the beautiful lake and relaxing on the cabins nice deck. The view of the mountains and lake is just amazing. The cabin has a nice dock if you plan on bringing a boat or jet skis. The boat launch is approximately 5 miles away from the cabin. We will be staying at this cabin again in the future.
