OCEAN TRAILS MENDOCINO ARTIST RETREAT
Get away to the glorious Mendocino coast and stay in a truly inspired dream house -- local artist Erin Dertner’s appointed getaway by the sea, receiving guests since the Spring of 2009. Boasting four bedrooms all with ocean views, 4 full baths, a large great room and a pool parlor that can become a 5th bedroom. The Retreat is spacious and non-allergenic, with mostly tile and hardwood floors. Enjoy the outdoor area with large gas grill and 2 picnic tables and a new (2015) 60 jet, 6 person, hot tub. Fenced-in area great for dogs to hang out.
Only 1.5 mi north of the village of Mendocino, yet far enough away to experience total peace and quiet. Russian Gulch State Park borders part of the house, and its a pleasant stroll on our private lane right into the park entrance (free admission for walk-ins) where you can walk along the headland trails, see a sinkhole, walk to the beach, hike to a waterfall, bike on a path through the gulch, and have glorious picnics on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Enjoy the ample “cook’s kitchen”, the expansive deck and the comfortable quarters, complete with Erin’s artwork adorning every room. We're on the west/ocean side of highway 1 in a location many consider to be the most desirable for vacation homes in Mendocino, with ocean views to the south and west, from the living area and from all the bedrooms.
Perfect for 8 people, but can accommodate 2 extra people comfortably and seat 10 at the dining table; there is room to sleep more people, but please inquire as approval is needed. The master has a king bed and lavish bath with a 2 person shower and giant tub. A 2nd large room with king bed has its own bath with shower, while a queen bedded room and a bedroom with a set of twins (that can be made into a king) share a roomy bath with large shower. The living room and both king bedded rooms have ample floor space for futons while the entry/pool room has a trundle for 2, which is also connected to the 4th full bathroom. With televisions in the living room and Art Studio room, many books, board games and your own pool hall, this is a perfect spot for groups of all ages.
The vacation home is regularly monitored by the owners to maintain quality, and is professionally managed, to give guests at Ocean Trails a worry-free vacation experience.

Guest Comments: 'The bed was so comfortable that we went home and bought the same kind.' 'We leave here happy, peaceful and rested.' 'Loved every minute here, you thought of everything, the view, the remodel, the stove...we are looking forward to returning soon.' 'Your kitchen is equipped better than my house and I've lived there for 10 years!' 'We absolutely loved everything about your house. Looking from this gorgeous view was a real treat. You had all the amenities of any first rate spa, except no spa is surrounded by such gorgeous artwork.' 'We had a wonderful time in your home and truly appreciate your work in accomodating all TEN of us. It is amazingly spacious and has the most gorgeous view over lovely gardens, natural habitat and the sea. On the morning we left, two deer ambled into the driveway and helped themselves to some of your flora. Since we live in the city, it was a thrill to see them 'up close and personal,' as my daughter likes to say. I also appreciated all of the little touches you arranged and the ample use of your kitchenware!'

I have held off writing this review because I am not usually one to want to write negative comments about a rental. I always appreciate it when people offer their homes to rent and understand that there can be a great deal of wear and tear on a property.
However, HomeAway requested this review so here it goes.
The positive first:
The house is large enough to accommodate at least two families and provides bedrooms on each end of the house. This worked out well since we took our grandchildren and they were able to be away from the adults while napping and going to bed earlier than everyone else. The dining room table is a great for a large group. The kitchen accommodates several people working together. I misunderstood the access to the beach because I thought we were able to walk down to the beach from the house. However, a short walk from the house is Russian Gulch Park which gives people access to the beach. It was also very special to be able to bring our dog on our trip and appreciate that the owners of the house allow that. He had such a wonderful time on the beach. Even though the property manager was a little difficult to get ahold of at first they were very nice and helpful with an issue is connectivity with the TV and the bad smell.
Now the negative:
I would like to preface these remarks with the kind of accommodations we are used to staying in, we like to stay in 4 or 5 star hotels and this may be the problem with our review.
The furniture has tears and stains and is falling apart
The coffee table has broken parts
At least one of the dressers is difficult to open
The kitchen equipment is mediocre
Dishwasher definitely needs to be replaced
The refrigerator froze many of the things in it
The decor is unattractive
There is a lot of deferred maintenance
A sewage smell might come from the laundry room and is localized to the billiard room
Bedding was shabby not shabby chic
Towels smell like mildew
Chairs on the deck are not functional or broken
The TV in one of the bedrooms is from the 1990s
We have a rule at home to take our shoes off when in the house however when we arrived the floors were very dirty. Everyone's feet were filthy.
We had our annual reunion here this year for 7 of us.. The house was spacious, with good separation of space nice bedrooms with ocean views.. We enjoyed the gourmet kitchen, fully loaded with all one would need to cook in, and spacious table for playing games.. We enjoyed the piano as well as the hot tub, and nice natural landscaping. It was quiet, close to hiking trails and a short drive into Mendocino with great shops and resturaunts. Sitting on the front deck with a glass of wine, overlooking the ocean was a treat! Kim responded quickly to any questions we had.
We rented this house for an annual writers' retreat and it was perfect. 9 - 10 people attended for a week, only two of them a couple, and everyone had plenty of room to spread out. It never felt crowded. The house is in a neighborhood, but still feels secluded and peaceful. Many of us loved walking into Russia Gulch SP with morning coffee. The open plan of the kitchen and living room is great for entertaining.
Kitchen was well stocked, the beds comfortable, and we had everything we could have wanted.
In particular, Kim was great to work with. We ran into a few problems with the water pump, and Kim responded right away. While out of town herself, she coordinated with her fantastic property manager/crew to get things squared away in short order.
I highly recommend this property. Would definitely stay here again.
Great home with everything you need to make your stay comfortable. Lots of room and games to enjoy at the house. Wildlife right in the back yard! Next to Russian Gulch Park, very easy walk from house to park entrance. Close to Mendocino and a fairly short drive to many beaches and activities.
This house was perfect for our group of 4 couples in Mendocino to a birthday. A great open plan living, dining, kitchen was perfect for entertaining. The 4 Bedrooms were separated, two on each side of the house. A pool table room was a fun thing to have. The location was secluded, a nice fenced back yard for our dog with a hot tub, and views of the ocean all around. Beds were comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. Located a mile from Mendocino and just a few from Ft.Bragg was great.
Kim the owner was very easy to work with and she even recommended a local chef to come a cook a wonderful dinner for us on the birthday night. My only complaint was that check in was not until 5pm which seemed late.
We will definitely will be going back!
This was a special long weekend for me and my husband as it was our birthday weekend! 10 of our family members joined us. Everyone loved the living room and especially the couch! This was a memorable weekend and we had a great time! Fun wonderful and free walk to a couple trails that we thoroughly enjoyed. Very quick drive to the main Mendocino town. There were minor issues around the house but wasn't too bad (we informed the owner) however not so bad that we would not stay here again. Hopefully all the issues would be resolved by next year because we plan on making this a yearly thing!
See you next year :) Maybe in August so that it is a bit warmer.
Too many great restaurants to list. Aquatic center with water slide in nearby Fort Bragg. Pt. Cabrillo Lighthouse less than 5 minutes by car. Mendocino village 2-3 minutes by car. Russian Gulch State Park 5 minute walk to entrance. Big River Beach in Mendocino, 4 minutes by car.
