The Barn has been lovingly renovated into a charming seaside cottage. It is located on private acreage four miles from the village of Jonesport, across from Roque Island.
This unique oceanfront house exudes character and is furnished with an eclectic mix of antiques and tasteful artifacts. The Barn is a place where you'll immediately feel at home, and by the time you leave, you'll feel you've made a new and treasured friend. It's a peaceful get-away where you can get in tune with the sounds of nature.
Listen to the surf come ashore on the popple stone beach, enjoy the colors and textures of the lovely perennial and vegetable gardens, or take the path to the cliff side where you can marvel at the panoramic view of the ocean--perfect for sunrises.
Later in the day, stroll to a pristine sand beach where you may find some wonderful shells or bits of sea glass. Then relax on the front porch where you can watch the sun set over the open fields and two freshwater ponds.
Eric and Betty Kelley are the owners/hosts of The Barn at Mary Jim's Shore. They know that you will love this amazing property the second you arrive. The Barn is a welcoming and comfortable cottage affording you all the amenities you could ask for and the extraordinary oceanfront property is large, private, and beautifully maintained. Give it a try--they're sure you'll return again and again!
What a wonderful week at The Barn. It is cozy, exceptionally clean and provided a great place to relax, read, or just walk over to the nearby beach to find sea glass. Betty and Eric were great hosts that were available to give us helpful suggestions for area sites to visit, where to hike, etc. We enjoyed a week of perfect weather and in this perfect location our stay there could not have been any better. It is definitely on our list of places to stay again.
It's difficult to decide which is more charming The Barn or our lovely hosts. Everything exceeded our expectations. The pictures of The Barn are beautiful but it is so much better in person. The views from every window are amazing, from the shore covered with popple stones to the beautiful trees and expansive meadow. My husband consulted Betty on different sites in the area and we couldn't have had better advice, every suggestion she made was spot on. Betty and Eric are warm, thoughtful and creative and they attend to every detail, from the utensils in the house to having everything ready for a seaside fire. It is difficult to put into words what a wonderful experience it is at The Barn. Betty, Eric and Sugar provide a magical environment where we found ourselves having more fun, giggling more and awed by the beauty surrounding us. We plan to become regular visitors.
how amazing this place is so it is available when we want to return !!
My husband and I chose this place as our honeymoon destination and we wouldn't have picked any other place. Upon arriving to The Barn we were greeted by Betty, Eric and Sugar their lovely dog. Eric and Betty are very accommodating with ensuring the house has everything you need to feel right at home and that you feel as such. The Barn, which is clean and decorated to perfection has something to be admired with every turn, like the gorgeous wood burning stove, fire place and collection of antiquities. There is plenty of natural light that flows throughout the homes many windows. My favorite window was above the bed, great for sunny wake up calls and afternoon naps. Regardless of my favorite spot as you will surely find your own, wether it be by the outdoor fire pit, cozy inside stoking the fireplace or watching hummingbirds to go by as you sip your coffee by the large window.
As for Betty and Eric they are exceptional people who have put a lot of thought into the home to accomplish the perfect get away in our eyes. They have knowledge of the people, businesses and history of the Jonesport and Machias area. The towns may be small, but the people are very nice, the food is great and hitting the flea market on the Dyke was always a treasure hunt. Roque Bluff and Jasper Beach are great places to consider visiting. There is a grocery store about 12mi away that we visited once to stock up on snacks, beverages and staples for the week. Everything is about 12-15mi away so I would recommend planning your trips out wisely to save time. We didn't plan our days out necessarily and ended up asking the locals and Betty or Eric for recommendations. They lead us to the beaches for some hiking and then picked up amazing lobster from Mother Shucker's. Eric was kind enough to show us the technique of the lobster boil for our surf and turf dinner. My husband and I ended with drinks & s'mores by the fire pit, listening to the waves crash below and star gazing above.
To sum it up... We had such an amazing experience that as soon as we were back on the road home, we were already planning a return Summer trip!!
What a wonderful place, the best kind of place, full of natural beauty that is so well cared for and in turn nurtures the intriguing and beautiful wildlife. Such views of the bay, shore, and islands! We saw 48 species of birds on the 30+ acres we roamed which makes a wonderful accompaniment to the setting in sight and sound. We loved to hear the hermit thrush sing its flute-like melody. We loved the chorus of frogs too. The sounds were not at all overpowering, but gentle like the waves pulling across the stones at the shoreline. That sounds like soft applause. We saw harbor porpoises and seals breaching in the bay. Every moment had its enchantment.
The Barn itself is a treat with every detail lovingly placed. Every need is anticipated. Just the right accent of antiques and collectibles, comfy furniture, braided rugs, and wonderful books on local history and natural history and more. We loved the old beams and the decoration (colors) is so welcoming. Eric had wood laid out in the fireplace and plenty more ready at hand. The landscaping is beautiful and I love the small rock sculptures in unexpected places.
It was just the right spot to travel to amazing places too. We enjoyed Acada, Great Waas, The Bold Coast, Quoddy Head, Lubec, Campobello Island, Jonesport, and Machias--each with their charms.
Betty makes beautiful luminaries and we love Sugar, the aptly named pooch! Such good people here, unobtrusive, but helpful and friendly at every turn when sought out.
We'll be back!

Betty, Eric and Sugar are wonderful hosts. They offer help and suggestions to newcomers to get the lay of the land. The website pictures are accurate and true, But it does not capture how "at home" you will feel. The views from the house and property are spectacular. Eric gets a gold star for keeping the property groomed like a Country Club, You can tell it is a labor of love for Him.
Jonesport Maine is a wonderful secluded location, But close enough to Acadia in the south or Lubec to the north. The Barn is truly a wonderful relaxing stay. We will return again next year.
This year was our second year at The Barn and we are already looking forward to next year’s trip!
Location: We’ve found Down East, Maine to be one of the most picturesque and relaxing places. It’s a vacationer’s dream…unspoiled and peaceful with no lack of character and charm. We love spending our days hiking along the Bold Coast (unreal), lazing at the beach, and exploring the local towns.
The Barn: After our daily explorations, we found evenings at The Barn to be perfect. Gorgeous sunsets provide the perfect backdrop for cocktails and fresh seafood dinners. We were also lucky enough to enjoy a full moon during our stay…the moon reflecting over the water was so incredibly beautiful and memorable.
Hosts: Eric and Betty are the loveliest of hosts. The love and care they put into The Barn is impossible to miss. The same is true in their effort to ensure you have a wonderful stay. Whether it’s by stocking The Barn with information on the area or providing their personal recommendations, you are sure to get the most out of Down East, Maine. It’s also important to note, that while Eric and Betty will provide as much information about the area as you’d like, they are also incredibly respectful of your privacy. They look to you to initiate interactions and never impose.
