Mitch and Mary are a retired couple who fell in love with the Door County area. Mitch was a tile contractor and always wanted to build his own home. Since 2006 we have been building this home. Building in a quarry has presented some challenges, but it is guaranteed to be unique.
Mitch and Mary Heinrichs purchased this house in 2006
Door County offers so much with it's parks, beaches, theatres, restaurants and shopping.
It is a quiet private area yet within minutes of all Door County has to offer. Owners on premises to take care of any needs or problems.
We very much agree with all of the previous reviews and comments. Everything at The Quarry House could not have been better.....especially our hosts, Mary and Mitch. We have visited Door County for the past five seasons and our experience here was, without a doubt, the best. Beautiful and relaxing accommodations. We very much look forward to returning.
Left this gorgeous home today. We stayed here for July 4th weekend holiday. As before, (its our second stay here and will choose to stay here again when we return to Door County) our stay was comfortable. This time we stayed at the Carriage house (last time we were at their guest room) with my Mom, son and yes our Golden Retriever. The Carriage house is awesome and has a full kitchen. Bathroom is great with nice shower. There's also a huge bathtub. We never had to eat in a restaurant this time of our stay and made breakfast and dinner in their kitchen. There is a private patio accessible from the bedroom. Awesome view all around as Mary and Mitch has great and well kept garden. The smell of the flowers is relaxing. I totally agree with the review of the person before this review. We also went home with one of Mitch's paintings(very reasonably priced with the frame!). Love that we get to take home a nice painting (titled Highway 42 by Mitch) for souvenir made by a local artist in Door County. We have stayed at several other VRBO and this is by far the best because of Mitch and Mary. If you are planning to go to Door County, choose Fish Creek town and stay at the Quarry House! Highly recommended!
I stumbled upon this posting not knowing what awaited us. As my wife and I pulled up on the Quarry Home property we entered a compound filled with beauty and built to display the magnificent rock formations formed by glaciers. This dream home has stories behind every stone piece and tile labored by her creators, Mitch & Mary. They were the highlight of our getaway providing exceptional hosting: friendly, mindful, respectful, inviting and full of stories waiting for a willing pair of ears. The space was clean, well kept and ready for our stay. The amount of room was suiting for 4+ let alone just us two. Mitch and Mary were very open to share their dream home and may invite you to sit outside on their beautiful cedar pergola hand built from local wood. This wasn't just a place to put your head down at night, it's a mini museum with two curators who've labored their hearts out waiting for you to enter and enjoy. Take a tour of their home and you're going to see a unique piece of geology surrounded by walls filled with pieces of history and their stories. By the way, Door County is great, but The Quarry House was the main attraction for us :) Thank you Mitch and Mary, we'll be back and we can't stop telling anyone who'll listen about how much we enjoyed our stay at The Quarry House!
Such a beautiful home! The home owners are wonderful and make you feel right at home. Plenty of space to relax and enjoy all that Door County has to offer! We loved it so much we booked a return trip in October.
My wife and I had shipped our son and daughter off to college and needed someplace to escape to in order to recharge our batteries. Our golden retriever asked to make the trip as well. Fortunately, I stumbled upon the perfect location to enjoy some rest and relaxation. The Quarry House was the right destination. Mary and Mitch were wonderful hosts, inviting us into their home, sharing stories, answering questions and graciously inviting us for crackers, cheese and wine one evening under Mitch's handcrafted pergola. Their place is spectacular, off the beaten path yet close enough to everything and every place that we wished to visit. We spent days hiking and biking the paths of Newport State Park and Peninsula State Park and sitting in the sunshine along Lake Michigan and reading a good book. The Carriage House accommodations were superb - clean, spacious and comfortable (with a whirlpool tub to soak aching muscles at the end of the day). Every amenity that we might have needed was available. I enjoyed sitting in the shade under the pergola and reading as the chickadees, nuthatches, blue jays, red bellied woodpeckers, Downy & Hairy woodpeckers and Kingfishers kept me company. It was the perfect spot for us with two wonderful hosts.
Just spent a great week in Door County, on the outskirts of Fish Creek, at this unusual and beautiful house in a quarry. Mitch and Mary were our hosts, they were gracious, thoughtful, and generous. They gave us a tour of the whole house, which was very interesting, and Mary even made us a zucchini bread and picked some tomatoes for us. They live on the property, and were respectful of our privacy, but were available to help us if needed. Though the carriage house is attached to the main house, there is an outside stairway between the two buildings, so we could never hear them. They made sure we knew we were welcome to join them on their patio any time, but if we just wanted to wind down alone after an active day, there was a small patio with table and chairs behind the carriage house as well. We were able to bike from the house, and Peninsula state Park was just a few minutes by car. We spent our time there hiking with my dog, kayaking and biking. It rained one day out of the week, which was perfect for gallery hopping.
Door County is a tourists delight. State parks and beautiful scenery abound. The Quarry House is close to all, but in a quiet peaceful area.
