About David Klett
We fell in love with Lake Lure the first time we saw it in 1984, and returned three weeks later and purchased a small cottage on the lake for weekend and summer vacation use. In preparation for retirement at the lake in 2006, we added a major second story addition to the original small cabin and built Five Oaks Cottage, a guest-house for additional space for family and friends and for a vacation rental when we are not using it. We are delighted to be able to share this beautiful and special place with others and we enjoy meeting the many wonderful folks who find us through VRBO and become our guests at Five Oaks.
Why David Klett chose Lake Lure
The natural beauty of this area is unsurpassed.

Nice little getaway
Great little property if you are wanting access to the lake without having to rent a huge place and pay huge lake front prices. David was kind and encouraged us to pretend like the place was our own, giving us access to everything on the property to include anything in the boathouse and dock (minus the motorized boats). We enjoyed taking the canoe out, getting our paddle boards out on the lake and fishing off the dock. The highlight for our kids was jumping off the “high dive” (the top of the boathouse). Be aware, it is quite a huck from the dock back up to the cottage, as it is quite steep. The cottage had everything we needed. We cooked all but one of our meals there. It is pretty cozy (small) but doable for a family of 4 with younger kids (ours are 9 and 5). Cottage did have a bit a gnat/fruit fly problem, and had kind of a damp smell, but I’m sure that just comes with the humidity. All in all a great little place to get away and enjoy the lake!
Beautiful cottage, with all necessities and then some provided. Tucked into the woods, quiet. Beautiful lake, decks, and an array of aquatic equipment readily available. Lots of hiking opportunities and spectacular views readily available. Shops and restaurants of Chimney Rock and Bat Cave nearby.
A big thanks
We had an incredible trip. Big thanks to the Kletts for their hospitality and putting up with our Shenanigans
Wonderful cottage in every way!
Clean, extremely well stocked, and absolutely adorable!
We absolutely loved staying here! Penny and David were amazing hosts! Our kids had a fabulous week jumping off the deck, swimming in the lake, kayaking, catching fireflies, making s’mores, etc! The cabin was clean and cozy and we so appreciated having a real home away from home while on vacation!♥️
Thank you Alexis and Chad. You were great guests, and we hope to see you all again sometime.
Another Great Trip to Lake Lure; however wish it was Lake Front.
The cottage was great. I would just recommend that it be more clear that the cottage is not lake front. It is lake access. The owner's residents is between the cottage and the lake it self. The walk to the boat dock/lake is a short one, however it is a steep one as well. Also given that the owner's live on the property, please be mindful of noise. We like to get a little loud in the moment of the sun and fun of the lake and that was not appreciated by the owners. I do recommend the property for a couple who just wants to get away and have a quite time at the lake.
