About Joe Bender

I am a San Francisco Unified School District Special Ed teacher who has lived in and loved this neighborhood for more than 20 years. Ashley and I enjoy making sure our guests get the most out of their visit and are glad to provide advice and directions as requested by guests. However, we won't intrude, and will wait for your request for help. This is a great location for travelers who love exploring urban environments on foot or using public transportation, which is very close and takes you all over the city.

Joe Bender purchased this house in 1986

Why Joe Bender chose San Francisco

We bought this property because of the neighborhood. It has a unique mix of walking convenience to all that a big city has to offer, such as music, theater, museums, restaurants and night life, and yet still retains a homey feeling.

What makes this house unique

The shops, restaurants, and nightlife of this neighborhood are exciting, dynamic and diverse. There is easy freeway access, and so many famous San Francisco sites within easy walking distance, including Alamo Square, Hayes Valley shopping, Opera Plaza, Symphony Hall, Theaters, Museums, The Castro District, City Hall and so much more. One ritual we enjoy is walking our dog at Alamo Square early in the evening during 'doggie social hour' when the best-behaved dogs play together in the park.

Comfortable apartment in a good central location.

  • 5 of 5

Lindsay and me stayed 6 nights in the apartment as part of a four week trip touring California. We found it to be very homely and made us feel as if we were residents of San Francisco and not just tourists. We used the public transport throughout our stay which was excellent for getting about. We liked staying in the Hayes district and the owner, Joe, gave us lots of tips as to places to go. We even managed to the top of Twin Peaks to see the fog blowing in over the city. Wonderful.

If you're looking for something a little different - the true San Francisco experience - stay here. In the food/coffee lovers paradise of Hayes valley this 2 bed is not new but has everything you need. Joe great to us, giving recommendations, letting us store luggage there after checkout on the day of departure and very quick to respond to any question.

Great place and gracious hosts!

  • 4 of 5

My family of 4 from Italy stayed here for 2 weeks. They had a great time. The hosts were gracious and accommodating. They constantly tried to make my family feel at home by checking on them from time to time despite of the language barrier. Great hospitality spirit and generosity from their side.

The house is also centrally located and close to transportation.

I really recommend this property for your stay in San Francisco.

Thanks Joe and Ashley!

We stayed at this very nice flat with three kids for four nights and enjoyed that time very much! The location of the house is perfect to explore the different areas of SF.

Joe and Ashley were awesome hosts, always at hand and helped us to find the nicest places we would not have found without them! Thank you very much, we had a great time!

Lovely Apartment in Hayes Valley Neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

My family of four spent the week of July 2-9 in San Francisco, and staying in this lovely 2 bedroom apartment made us feel as if we were residents of the city instead of tourists. The apartment is spacious, clean, and decorated so nicely that our daughters (in their 20's) both said they wanted to live there. The beds (one king, one queen) were very comfortable and the living room and kitchen have an open layout so that you can prepare a meal in one room and still be able to watch the large screen TV in the other. The kitchen is well equipped (the only thing it did not have, which did not matter to us but might to others, is a dishwasher) and there is one bathroom with a shower/tub combo with good water pressure. The apartment is on the garden/basement level of a beautifully painted Victorian house, and the ceilings are high with plenty of natural light through the windows so you never feel as if you are in a basement. The kitchen door opens into a small, charming garden full of potted plants and I enjoyed sitting out there with my morning coffee, glad to catch sight of the hummingbirds that came to the garden almost every day. Although we didn't use it, there is even an outdoor shower! There is also an outdoor clothesline which came in handy for drying bath towels and some of our hand-washable laundry. Although there is no washer/dryer on the premises there are laundromats within walking distance in the neighborhood. The rental process went very smoothly and the owners, Joe and Ashley, provided some unexpected treats, such as a tray full of snacks on the table, fluffy terry-cloth robes in the closets, books and board games. They also provided a book full of information pertaining to local supermarkets, attractions, restaurants, Muni and Bart transportation info, etc, which came in very handy. We knew parking in San Francisco was tough, but we found a spot on nearby Fell Street where we were able to leave our vehicle for most of the week. We bought 7-day city passports at a nearby train station ($43 each) so we were able to travel all over on the buses and cable cars. The apartment is within walking distance of Alamo Square, famous for the "Painted Lady" Victorian houses and we were able to walk to restaurants in the neighborhood for dinner. (Just be prepared, walking in almost ANY neighborhood in San Francisco includes lots of hills! ) We highly recommend this apartment and would definitely stay there again if we return to San Francisco.

We didn't want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

If you wonder why so many guests rate this Oak Street jewel with 5 stars, it's because they can't give it 10. We loved gazing at the rows of "Painted Lady" fashioned SF homes, and we applauded our luck at being able to stay in one whose deep hues, gold leafing, and scarlet jewels greeted us in true SF style. Other reviews affirm the apartment's spaciousness, its perfect location within walking distance of so much of SF, its convenient proximity to public transportation, and its eclectic decor. All of the accolades are true. Joe and Ashley's hospitality included super-prompt replies to my e-mailed questions, their cheerful greeting as we arrived, their delightful touches throughout the apartment (tourism literature, stacks of thick towels, a wicker basket of snacks and treats, kitchen cabinets stocked with every basic, the super-comfortable beds...., and their easy accessibility in case we needed them). Our two adult daughters and we (the parents) especially loved slipping into the idyllic apartment garden oasis. In the morning, hummingbirds darted among the brilliant red flowers and suspended feeder; and in the evening whimsical patio lights sparkled above us as we sipped wine and nibbled Joe and Ashley's complimentary Ghirardelli chocolates. We cannot thank them enough for the perfect SF experience!

Owner's Response: Wow! We can't thank you enough for taking the time to write such an amazing review! It was really a pleasure to meet you all, and we really enjoyed the small part we played in your family getting together from all over the continent. May you have many similar reunions in the near future, whether in Alaska or Philadelphia or somewhere in between, and may our paths cross again in another happy time.
