I am a San Francisco Unified School District Special Ed teacher who has lived in and loved this neighborhood for more than 20 years. Ashley and I enjoy making sure our guests get the most out of their visit and are glad to provide advice and directions as requested by guests. However, we won't intrude, and will wait for your request for help. This is a great location for travelers who love exploring urban environments on foot or using public transportation, which is very close and takes you all over the city.
Joe Bender purchased this house in 1986
We bought this property because of the neighborhood. It has a unique mix of walking convenience to all that a big city has to offer, such as music, theater, museums, restaurants and night life, and yet still retains a homey feeling.
The shops, restaurants, and nightlife of this neighborhood are exciting, dynamic and diverse. There is easy freeway access, and so many famous San Francisco sites within easy walking distance, including Alamo Square, Hayes Valley shopping, Opera Plaza, Symphony Hall, Theaters, Museums, The Castro District, City Hall and so much more. One ritual we enjoy is walking our dog at Alamo Square early in the evening during 'doggie social hour' when the best-behaved dogs play together in the park.
First time SF family vacation with our three young boys. Had a great time. Home was very comfortable. We appreciated the full kitchen, large beds, and cozy family room. Also the snacks were a nice touch. Thanks Joe!
We loved our stay. The apartment is extremely spacious, well equipted and spotless. We had very easy communication and Joe was great to work with. Everything was exactly as described and there was a comprehensive binder of important information on the counter which was very helpful. Wonderful rental, thanks again!
We had a great time. The location and apartment were very convenient.
Our stay at the Bender's garden apartment on Oak St in SF was perfect. They have made a very warm and welcoming place that is well equipped with everything one would need. The place is centrally located with easy access to public transportation. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are sure to return again.
Lindsay and me stayed 6 nights in the apartment as part of a four week trip touring California. We found it to be very homely and made us feel as if we were residents of San Francisco and not just tourists. We used the public transport throughout our stay which was excellent for getting about. We liked staying in the Hayes district and the owner, Joe, gave us lots of tips as to places to go. We even managed to the top of Twin Peaks to see the fog blowing in over the city. Wonderful.
