|Minimum Stay||1 - 2 nights|
The 45 minute boat ride from nearby Hilton Head, Savannah or Bluffton makes the stress of the week peel away with the sea breezes and the smell of the ocean. Drive your golf cart; wind through the centuries old Live Oaks, pass the lush golf course greens on to your cottage. Unlock the door to be welcomed by a magnificent view of the Atlantic just steps away, not behind other cottages. No need to flip coins to see who gets the bigger room, both are the same size, each Large with two Queen beds and private baths. Completely renovated with hardwood floors and granite counters in the kitchen with a Caribbean flare.
Relax on the huge screened porch or walk on the wide beach or shady lanes. Explore the Marshes or the inlets by kayak.
Ride Golf carts, fly kites, read books, write a book, make s'mores over a campfire, eat at some of the low country restaurants.
The hardest thing to do on Daufuskie is to decide between walking the quiet, clean beach, reading a book by the fire, searching for the elusive alligator in the ponds, sighting the seasonal Sea Turtle eggs or exploring for historic relics such as Indian arrowheads from the Civil War and ruins from the plantation days. Then again a game of tennis or a round of golf might satisfy. Or you could visit the Silver Dew Pottery for a lesson and local souvenir, our famous artist in residence, Chase Allen of the Iron Fish Gallery, the Island Museum for an education of the island or the Community Farm with it's adorable animals. Make sure to ask what the animal's names are when touring the Farm. Set up a reservation to tour and taste at the new Daufuskie Island Rum Distillery. Listen to live music at the local restaurants while sipping umbrella and boat drinks.
Or just see what the island offers your senses.

Our family lives in Atlanta, Georgia. We love to travel the world but always yearn to get to our favorite place, Daufuskie Island. This picture taken at Marshside Mama's.
Loretta purchased this cottage in 2004
Daufuskie intrigued our business and vacation interests. We knew that owning a place where our family could go on a weekend that didn't stress us out with traffic jams, long restaurant lines, and t-shirt shops one after the other AND be on the Atlantic Ocean within 5 hours was a good investment in family time.
We chose Daufuskie because it does not have all the chaotic demands of the typical tourist communities. We felt we could truly relax with family and friends while enjoying an incredible island experience so close to home. The Atlantic Ocean views from our screened porch, bedroom and yard are spectacular. We hear the waves, watch the boaters and the seagulls while eating breakfast on the porch.
Welcome to the Guest book for our Daufuskie Cottage.
We hope that you made memories and dream of your returns.
This was our 1st time in South Carolina. A 12 hour drive to Bluffton SC for an adventure! The boat ride over to Daufuskie as expected from previous reviews really set the tone that vacation had begun! When we arrived to the cottage it was exactly what we might have hoped it would be. Very clean and modern inside with the ocean right out the back door.
Although the cottage was very beautiful and modern inside, we actually seemed to gather day after day, night after night on the screened in back porch. The sound of the waves and the breeze from the ocean was so peaceful! We love to cook out and brought many items that needed to be prepared on the grill. This was truly like camping out for us with but with top notch amenities inside. The beds were quite comfortable and sleeping until we woke up without an alarm clock was awesome!
We made an almost daily trip to Freeport Marina to visit the grocery store for cooler ice, adult beverages and small items here and there that we forgot to bring. Exploring the island on the golf cart was also an awesome experience. Although we did not see everything their was to see, it gives us good opportunity to come back again sometime to explore other opportunities.
We brought our grown boys with us who both enjoyed playing golf several times at Melrose and Bloody Point. My wife and I spent one day at the Bloody Point pool which was very clean and refreshing. All the other days we set up the camp on the beach with the provided beach umbrellas and chairs which are stored on the screened in porch. It was also very nice having an outside shower to rinse the sand off of us prior to coming inside.
I must also mention that Lorretta was so helpful not only giving us ideas where to eat and things to bring, but also gave me good direction on the trip to Bluffton. We absolutely loved our 2016 vacation and will certainly come back.
My family and I visited from the 7/31/16 to 8/6/16. I was looking for a location away from the crowded tourist hubbub. Daufuskie Island is that and more. The woman running the tickets for the ferry was not the most friendly or endearing person, but everybody else in the process was. We were charged twice as much per bag so I'm assuming that was each way rather than round trip as she (the ferry woman) told us. The ferry ride was pleasant...the people meeting us a Daufuskie were pleasant. Since there were six of us, we packed a large cooler. Unfortunately during the stay the refrigerator malfunctioned and actually heated the inside and our perishables perished. There are not a lot of grocery options on the island. The store at Freeport Marina stocks some things, i.e. a couple of dozen eggs, ketchup, mustard, etc. Milk was very difficult to find. We ultimately did find milk at Marshside Mama's though you'll pay dearly per gallon though it's worth it with kids. It's not on display; you need to ask for it. In addition, they make frequent runs to the mainland and if you tell them what you need they will get it for you. Loretta was very available and accommodating while we were there and had to contact her (i.e the fridge). My wife wanted to take the porch home with us...it's a very nice place to sit and enjoy the quiet.
None of this was too distressing as I wanted quiet island life. It certainly was and was well worth it.
The vacation was exactly as we hoped it would be. Loretta is very kind and a thoughtful person. She even called to make sure everything was in order, and it certainly was! The cottage was very nice. Clean, orderly, and comfortable. When we first arrived we were greeted with a little newt on the wall (inside) and a tree frog in the toilet. That made for some good laughs as it scared my daughter and she screamed. But, after removing them, we had no issues with the cottage what so ever and completely understand about those little critters.
Daufuskie is quiet and has beautiful ocean side beaches. There is plenty of room on the beach where you can get away from others.
Getting there is expensive, by most standards, however Loretta let us know that ahead of time so it was no surprise.
The food is very good at all of the restaurants. A couple of places look kind of sketchy, but do not be scared of them. The food is good.
I would suggest having a "plan B" for the golf cart transportation. We rented the cart that is stored at the cottage. It ran fine and we had no trouble. However it seemed to be running very hot (heat from under the seat). So I checked the oil. Although it was not low, it was VERY black. The left rear wheel bearing occasionally makes noise, and the welds are broken on the rumble seat foot rest. It gave me concerns about the maintenance of the cart. You would not want to break down somewhere on the island because there are no options other than walking.
I would go back, and totally recommend this cottage, this owner, and this island. Thanks Loretta & family! We appreciated everything. One of my daughters wants to paint her room the color of your walls and decorate it the same!
Loretta was amazing to work with and the home was just as I expected - clean, comfortable, well-equipped and in a beautiful location. The beds and pillows were heavenly and the porch was our hangout for much of our visit with relatives from the west coast. The use of the golf cart was great because it is an absolute necessity on Daufuskie. This is a perfect spot to get away from it all and relax. We enjoyed listening to live music at Marshside Mama's and at at the Freeport Marina. I would highly recommend using Bull River Marina for your water transport and then using Calibogue Cruises for the land transport. Just make sure and reserve your transportation about 4-6 weeks out and then calling a few days before to touch base. Try to line up a meal to be delivered to the house by Ernestine because her fried chicken is divine! The gumbo and oyster po'boy at Marshside Mama's was terrific, so don't be turned off by the appearance of the place. Also check out the tour at the Rum Distillery and take a self-guided tour of the Community Farm. If you are really lucky, you will stumble upon an oyster festival on the island! To get ready for your trip, check out the local newsletter online, "The Daufuskie Front Porch" and read the May, 2016 article in Southern Living Magazine. The neighborhood offers a beautiful community pool area with fire pits and the romance of old oak trees with spanish moss in a setting that is unspoiled by being over-commercialized. It truly is nature at its best (well, except for the "Noseeums," you may want to be sure and pack bug spray for evenings near the marinas). The "Island Girl" cottage is lovely and we did not want to leave. We hope to make a return visit soon!
We feel in love with this wonderful beach cottage, the idyllic location, and the lost in time feel of Daufuskie Island. We came here for spring break with our 4 girls age 5-10 and told them that they could not use iPad while on the island. They did not ask for them once - in fact we never even turned on the tv. They were too busy riding horses, collecting shells & sand dollars, riding bikes and just being free to explore. We would wake up and watch the sunset then walk the beach in our PJs - we had the whole place to ourselves.
The screened in porch was the perfect spot to just watch the ocean or read while the kids organized shells and played in the grass or on the beach. The layout of the cottage was perfect for us with a separate kids room with two queen beds and bath and a separate suite for us. The kitchen and dining room were perfect for family meals. If you go you must call one of the local Gullah ladies to deliver an amazing home cooked meal - one of the highlights of the trip.
We can't say enough about the trip or the cottage and Loretta was accessible to answer questions throughout.
- a little secret slice of a simpler beach life!
It will make it harder for us to rent!
Over the past two years, 128 Ave of the Oaks and the owner have become a wonderful part of our family’s year. This year’s stay was no different. The cottage is beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. The amenities (especially the beach toy/chairs) made our trip that much better. The large back porch is really what makes the whole experience - our family read, played games (actual board games not on a screen!) and ate together there.
The bedrooms are well sized and both bathrooms have nice fixtures and again are immaculate. The kitchen has everything you could need in terms of dishwasher, stove, and fridge. The main room is also a good size we had guests from another cottage visit and with entertained three families very comfortably.
The golf cart was fine, I think I may prefer the electric to the gas, but that is totally a personal choice. The ONLY thing I would recommend changing or adding is “soft closers” for the screen porch door, my little girls were having so much fun on the beach and on the porch that they kept jostling Daddy’s cocktail as they ran back and forth.
A great cottage, and Loretta is a wonderfully patient and responsive owner (even when all of the questions are in the documents she sent, she still calmly walked me through them upon our arrival), this cottage was one of the big parts of a wonderful family vacation.
