About the property

2 Oversized Bedrooms 2 Large Bathrooms-Romantic or Family Friendly Sleeps 8

The 45 minute boat ride from nearby Hilton Head, Savannah or Bluffton makes the stress of the week peel away with the sea breezes and the smell of the ocean.

We have a new Ferry, Daufuskie Island Ferry, which leaves from Hilton Head at the foot of the bridge. Multiple daily runs. Or you can choose a private water taxi from Savannah or Bluffton.

Wind through the centuries old Live Oaks, pass the lush golf course greens on to your cottage. Unlock the door to be welcomed by a magnificent view of the Atlantic just steps away, not behind other cottages. No need to flip coins to see who gets the bigger room, both are the same size, each Large with two Queen beds and large private baths. Completely renovated with hardwood floors and granite counters in the kitchen with a Caribbean flare.

Relax on the huge screened porch or walk on the wide beach or shady lanes. Explore the Marshes or the inlets by kayak or take a kayak tour of the marsh eco systems.

Ride Golf carts, fly kites, read books, write a book, make s'mores over a campfire, eat at some of the low country restaurants. Two with live music on the weekends! Our newest is Lucy Belle's Cafe for breakfast and lunch.

The hardest thing to do on Daufuskie is to decide between walking or running the quiet, clean beach, reading a book, searching for the elusive alligator in the ponds, sighting the Bald Eagles or seasonal Sea Turtle eggs or exploring for historic relics such as Indian arrowheads from the Civil War and ruins from the plantation days.

Then again a game of tennis or a round of golf at Bloody Point might satisfy. Or you could visit the Silver Dew Pottery for a lesson and local souvenir. Or visit our famous artist in residence, Chase Allen of the Iron Fish Gallery, or the Island Museum for an education of the island or the Community Farm with it's adorable animals. Make sure to ask what the animal's names are when touring the Farm.

Set up a reservation to tour and taste at the new Daufuskie Island Rum Distillery.

Listen to live music at the local restaurants while sipping umbrella and boat drinks.

Or just see what the island offers your senses.

About Loretta

Our family lives in Atlanta, Georgia. We love to travel the world but always yearn to get to our favorite place, Daufuskie Island. This picture taken at Marshside Mama's.

Loretta purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Loretta chose Daufuskie Island

Daufuskie intrigued our business and vacation interests. We knew that owning a place where our family could go on a weekend that didn't stress us out with traffic jams, long restaurant lines, and t-shirt shops one after the other AND be on the Atlantic Ocean within 5 hours was a good investment in family time.

What makes this cottage unique

We chose Daufuskie because it does not have all the chaotic demands of the typical tourist communities. We felt we could truly relax with family and friends while enjoying an incredible island experience so close to home. The Atlantic Ocean views from our screened porch, bedroom and yard are spectacular. We hear the waves, watch the boaters and the seagulls while eating breakfast on the porch.

Clean and perfect for 2 families!

  • 5 of 5

We had an adventure finding a break in the storms getting there- Mayriverexcursions was awesome loading our stuff at LOW tide onto the boat and getting us there ALMOST dry! The rest of our stay was picture perfect weather. The golf carts were great to go looking for deer at night and cruising the island with the kids. The beach was quiet and full of treasures for the kids and the shopping was fabulous- purses and pottery is all you really need anyway! Thanks to Mrs Loretta for helping us navigate the house and the history of the island. If you have a baby, it's good to know there's a closet perfect for a pack-n-play!

Remote Island Getaway Just Outside Hilton Head

  • 5 of 5

Daufuskie Island, with its Spanish moss, alligators, and golf cart transportation makes you feel like you are on a remote island. And in some ways, you are! There is no grocery store, just a few items at the general store, and most of what you have is what you bring with you. But it is far from a camping experience. The house is contemporary in its decor and comes with hot showers, a fully-equipped kitchen, a washer and dryer and a functioning internet. But the best feature of all is the back porch, with comfortable patio chairs, ceiling fans, shade from lovely trees and an amazing oceanfront view. But we also loved the flocks of wild birds in the trees. But wait. The Gullah tour by Sallie Ann Robinson helped us learn about the history of Daufuskie, the warmth of its people and the charm of its seclusion. So many wonderful memories of Daufuskie. Just go!

Lovely spot on a lovely island!

  • 5 of 5

Loretta's cottage is lovely and well-appointed, and Loretta was very responsive whenever I had a question while planning our stay. As others have said, though the whole place is nice, the porch is killer with a great view of the beach through the trees! Look to the left and you can see the Harbor Town Lighthouse on Hilton Head and to the left to see ships coming into and out of the Port of Savannah. The two bedrooms are HUGE, as are the baths. Having the option to eat inside or on the porch is wonderful and we took advantage of both. Kitchen is also well-equipped. The golf cart, arranged through Loretta, awaited us upon arrival and we enjoyed touring the island on it. The island itself is both beautiful and bohemian with a fascinating history and some quirky, fun restaurants. Also enjoyed rum tasting at the rum factory and wine tasting at the vineyard. All in all, a relaxing, thoroughly delightful vacation.

We really enjoyed our vacation at your beautiful ocean front house.

  • 5 of 5

Loretta,

Kathy and I had such a great time. Your house is fantastic. The decor is outstanding. It has everything you need. It is truly a home away from home. We couldn't have had a more relaxing vacation. The views are gorgeous. Looking out at the sunrise over the ocean from the big front porch to walking on the beach at night and looking up at the stars. The large oaks covered in Spanish moss lining the streets, all the beautiful birds, the deer, the black squirrels and of course the alligators in the ponds make you feel like you are in a nature preserve. The people we met on the island were all very friendly. The food was great at the Crab Factory and so was the rum from the local Daufuskie Island Rum Company. Thanks for sharing your island retreat with us. It is a vacation that Kathy and I will never forget. Hope we can visit your hide-a-way on Daufuskie Island again soon.

Love, Bob & Kathy.

Owner's Response: Bob and Kathy, This response to the visceral feeling one gets when they escape from the chaos they didn't even realize they lived in everyday, makes having our cottage available to share with you, such a blessing. It is truly a vacation. Glad you finally made it. Just open your calendar now and choose your dates for return. Love

It was a perfect weekend get-away!

  • 5 of 5

It was a first time trip to Daufuskie for a long overdue high school girls trip. The cottage and the island did not disappoint! We loved the location, and the cottage provided everything we needed, including a view and wonderful screened in porch to enjoy the island breeze. Loretta was wonderful to deal and she was very informative about what to do during our stay. We hope to make this an annual event, and I can't wait to go back!!
