Located in beautiful Bella Vista, one of the city's most sought after areas. So much at your fingertips whether you come by car, choose to walk or take public transportation. We can sleep a maximum of 2 guests with one queen sized bed. We are child friendly as we have 9 grandchildren! We have a beautiful garden area in the rear of our property which we are happy to share with you. We are a block from the Italian Market and within walking distance of Center City. Many good restaurants!
My husband, Hans bought the property as a young immigrant from Germany. It was just a shell at the time. He worked on it and little by little turned it into a beautiful home. He raised his daughter here and we were married years later. I love this area. I grew up in the suburbs and never thought I would live in a city, but I just love it here. It's so convenient. We can go out for a meal and have a few drinks and never worry about driving. I love all the arts and culture. In general we just have everything at out finger tips. I could never think of moving to the burbs again.
Donna Leathers-Sonnenberg purchased this apartment in 1975
Because it's in a great location. It's in a quiet neighborhood away from all the noise and hubbub of center city, but close enough to walk there when I get the urge. I love the large garden area behind the house. In the summer months I have my morning coffee out there every day.
Our garden of course! It is beautiful with a winding path a "flower hill" and a greenhouse.
This unit was very clean, and the bed was wonderful. We were able to catch the bus wherever we wanted to go with no issues, which made the location perfect for our sightseeing vacation.
Donna & Hans were lovely. Hans met us the first night to give us the keys & show us the apartment. They even had coffee & breakfast pastries for us :)
This cozy apartment contains a super comfy bed with his & hers heated comforters. There's a small collection of books, games, & DVDs that includes a nostoligic read of Shel Silverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends." If you want to cook instead of eating out there's a full size fridge & other necessities in the kitchen, plus the Italian market is just a block away. The real gem of the apartment is the backyard garden with adorable turtles, where we drank coffee during our unseasonably warm November stay.
As a previous reviewer mentioned, if you cannot do a short flight of steep stairs, this is not the apartment for you. But that happily leaves this fantastic apartment free for the rest of us :)
Hans and Donna have a lovely studio unit that is completely private. Once inside there is another set of stairs leading to the garden area. That is what sold me when first booking. I loved sitting in the garden oasis when we had a chance. From arrival to departure, everything went smoothly with extra touches along the way. Hans baked a cake for us and there were coffee/cream/tea supplies. The place was extremely clean. The Italian market is so close and it is an easy walk to the historic sites. Our third day it was pouring rain, we were having brunch in the neighbourhood and Hans biked over with a huge umbrella for us to borrow for the day! Incredible service!
We definitely recommend that you stay here!
The hosts were absolutely lovely! They even offered to deposit us at the train or airport on the day of our departure.
The living space was exactly what we needed for our weekend getaway, however, the bathroom was EXTREMELY small. Every time I went to brush my teeth or use the toilet I was banging into multiple walls with my head or elbows. The shower was miniature. I am a tall person (6ft) and the showerhead was too low. Also, there was a plexiglass lid on the top of the shower that made the already small shower feel like a claustrophobic nightmare. Showering was quite awkward and not something we felt comfortable doing with the bathroom door closed.
The most interesting part of our stay came when stumbling across various personal item left in the apartment including but not limited to a family members ashes and a plethora of Nazi memorabilia.
As a Jewish person I did my best to recognize these item as historical and of potentially familial history and/or significance, but they made me feel extraordinarily unwelcome and uncomfortable.
As kind as caring as the hosts were, I wish they had created a neutral space to rent out before inviting guests in.
What a happening neighborhood- lots of coffee shops, restaurants, active nightlife, Magic Gardens and Italian Market. Everything we were there for was walking distance. Donna & Hans even helped us get a parking spot for the car so we were set for weekend. The apartment space is charming and pleasant- sufficient for all our needs. The garden is delightful and a pleasure to sit in at night after a day of activities. I would stay there again! The only down is that this lower level unit is not suitable for mobility impaired because of the stairs and unique features of the space. And Hans baked us a cake!
Great Location, blocks away from the Italian Market and exquisite restaurants. The first thing you should do is hit up the Italian Market. With all of the great food options available from homemade pasta and fresh produce we recommend grabbing your food there, bringing it back to the full kitchen provided.
We were able to walk everywhere and see the sights. We even used the "bike share station" which was a block away. Donna and Hans are amazing hosts, friendly and knowledgeable they even asked if we needed a ride to the airport!
We are located in the beginning of South Philadelphia 1-1/2 blocks from the Italian Market. Center City, Historical Philadelphia, are just a stone's throw away. Located on the end of a quiet dead end street yet close to all that the city has to offer. We are proud of the Nation's first hospital, first zoo and many other firsts. We are also on-site and may help you with any problems or questions.
