A Great Value for a full service villa - our amazing reviews tell it all!
Over the past 30 years, travelers have enjoyed an authentic Italian experience staying at our lovingly maintained 18th Century villa and ancestral home, "Casale Sonnino". The Villa is set amidst thirty acres of working vineyards and olive groves and is built upon 2000 year-old roman foundations which can be viewed in the basement. The property is located in Monte Porzio Catone, 4 kilometers from Frascati and 30 minutes from the heart of Rome by car or train.
The Casale Sonnino sleeps up to ten in five plus bedrooms (4+ upstairs, 1 ground floor) and three full baths (2 upstairs, 1 ground floor). However two couples have enjoyed sharing this comfortable, yet elegant historic home as well. The upstairs bedrooms have queen beds or they can be split apart for singles sharing a room. Also upstairs is a very large terrace with chairs, a tent pergola for meals and a ping pong table. The panoramic view stretching from Rome to the Apennine mountains is spectacular, especially when sharing a bottle of Frascati wine and appetizers at sunset.
On the ground level, there is a 20' x 40' living/dining room for gathering and dining. It features a grand fireplace and chandelier. A TV and breakfast room, with southern light looks out to the garden. The vintage-style cooks kitchen has marble top table in the center and updated appliances including a stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and toaster oven. There is an extensive collection of pots and pans, kitchen tools and spices for your use.
Outside the front door: In nice weather, the best place for a delightful meal is under the grape pergola in the garden by the vineyard.
A continental breakfast is included in your rental price as is daily housekeeping (excluding Sundays and holidays) . For other meals, you can shop in local markets and prepare your own feasts in the fully equipped kitchen. Have a gourmet dinner or several catered by us or a local 5-star chef. Or you may dine out at one of the many favorite local restaurants (we'll share ours!) or discover a trattoria on a trip to the countryside villages in Lazio. In Italy, there are so just so many places to eat and wines to love!
How long does one stay at the Casale and see Rome? If you only have a week, we recommend: 2 or 3 days in Rome, 2 days of day-tripping to Umbria, Tuscany or Lazio and the rest exploring the nearby Castelli Romani towns of Castel Gandolfo, Ariccia, Nemi, Frascati and Grottaferrata. During the summer, nearby Lago Albano has beach facilities where you can rent chairs and umbrella, paddle boats and go swimming in a clean lake. There is also a jogging trail that runs all around the lake and restaurants with splendid views.

About Claire Treves Brezel
My brother George and I are 5th generation co-owners of the Casale Sonnino. We grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, children of Italian immigrants - our father came from Turin and our mother, Clotilde Sonnino was from Rome - Trastevere. This property was her family homestead, and growing up we would go there on summer vacations to visit our Nonno and spend a few weeks. After college and graduate school and 14 years in corporate marketing and product development, I became a stay-at-home mom to my two now college/graduate -student children. manage the family vineyard , sell our own extra virgin olive oil and rent the villa to travelers who wanted a unique local and "off the beaten path" experience near Rome. In the early-90's, the Casale was among the first vacation-rentals on the internet, offering warm hospitality in Italy and we had a web site before Homeaway.com even existed! My brother, George lives at the Casale on-site, manages the vineyard/olive groves operation and provides hospitality and concierge service to our guests. As we have learned from our many appreciative guests and fans that a unique legacy, lifestyle and great food is meant to be treasured and shared. We strive to maintain the house, the spirit, the soul of our ancestors and the values of a bygone era. We hold our agrarian roots near and dear even as Rome's lights twinkle in the distance.
Claire Treves Brezel purchased this Villa in 1883
Why Claire Treves Brezel chose Monte Porzio Catone
My brother George and I are fifth generation co-owners of the “Casale”, our ancestral home, located in near Frascati on the outskirts of Rome. Our great, great grandfather began purchasing land in the area in 1883 and the farmhouse in 1900. In 1948, our grandparents transformed the farmhouse into the elegant family home which stands today. Though down to 25 acres from the original 100, we continue to cultivate grapes that are sold to a local Frascati DOC winemaker and produce delicious, top quality extra virgin olive oil from our 728 trees of several varieties including Leccino, Rosciola, Carboncello and Venina. We export the olive oil to the US where I sell it directly to family and friends and by passa parole - word of mouth.
What makes this Villa unique
A private, comfortable and clean historic family-owned home to call your own (not a "rental property"). Be surrounded by vineyards & olive groves on a working farm. Gorgeous views from the bedrooms, living room and rooftop terrace. Garden pergola with grapes above for dining al fresco around a marble table. Friendly, Engaging, Helpful, English & Italian speaking owner on site. Authentic Italian small-town living in the Castelli Romani on the outskirts of Rome. No Tourist Crowds. Easy access to the city by train at Colle Mattia station located 1 kilometer from our gate. 3 stops and 30 minutes to Rome Termini in the center. From Termini Station there are buses, taxis or you can walk to the historic center. Or you may take trains to other cities in Italy: Florence and Naples: 11/2 hours; Assisi: 2 1/2; Spoleto 1 1/2; Perugia 2-3 hours are just a sampling. The Casale is the perfect home base from which to see Rome for a couple of days and then go on day trips to all the small villages nearby or towns, historic sites and coastline of central Italy from Florence to the Amalfi Coast. The clean beach and charming town at Sperlonga, about 1 1/2 hours by car from the Casale is our absolute favorite. During the week in June recently, there was almost no one on the beach except us!

Incredible and unique home that made our Italian holiday so special
My family and I stayed in the beautiful Casale for 6 days in April 2018 and it was an incredible experience. The six of us were bowled over by the beauty of the country house, vineyards and location, and the warm hospitality of George and the Casale staff. We were greeted on arrival by a delicious meal coupled with fantastic Casale Sonnino wine, and every day a wonderful breakfast was laid out for us. The location was so convenient for exploring the surrounding sights, and we particularly enjoyed visiting Lake Albano, Frascati and Tivoli. It is also only a few minutes drive from two train stations where it takes only 30 min to get to Rome Termini - so convenient and affordable.
This really felt like we were staying in a home, not just a house - all of the little details made it a special experience. From meeting Dylan and Mr Chips - resident dog and cat of the manor, to the tour of the fascinating caves and tunnels under the house, and George's wonderful stories about the local history - this was an unforgettable holiday.
It was a pleasure hosting and getting to know you and your family. Sharing the comforts, amenities and the history of our homestead with guests is always a joy, but it was particularly so with your group. You were most appreciative of everything we did (or tried to do!). We can only hope that you will feel free to come visit with us again in the near future.
Perfectly located spacious, characterful villa for Roman/surroundings holiday.
Azienda agricolo Sonnino Treves, managed by very friendly host George Treves, is a very quaint vineyard and villa conveniently located 20 min from central Rome by train (easy access station by rental car). Offers everything from enjoying the house and grounds (with its very own catacombs, don't miss), stunning views across vineyards over Rome in the distance, to excursions around the nearby wine region, Ostia with its excavations and, as mentioned, conveniently Rome itself. Perfect for larger/extended family/friends holidays and/or events. Plenty of room to socialize or to withdraw, whatever the wish is. Highly recommended!
Amazing place and the service is great!!!
The views are breathtaking. The people are so warm and friendly. The place is absolutely beautiful. The property is very clean and the breakfast is outstanding. I would highly recommend to my family and friends.
Perfect location for filming our TV Show
We filmed at Casale Sonnino for a large UK reality series.
We had such an excellent service from the owners. They really went above and beyond to accommodate our filming needs and requests. The owners know the area so well and had great recommendations for places to film in the area.
The Casale itself is beautiful, surrounded by vineyards and olive grooves with beautiful interior. The owners were super flexible with us moving furniture and utilising all areas of the Casale and grounds, including the amazing tunnel system that runs underneath.
Was very helpful to have George (owner) on hand to help troubleshoot any queries.
Decent sized car park and space to put a generator. The Casale is nice and secluded so our filming was not interrupted.
Would definitely recommend as a location for a film or TV Show!
We so enjoyed hosting your cast and crew at Casale Sonnino and can't wait to see the finished episodes! You are welcome back any time to film on location or just for a visit, touring or relaxation. Thank you Ben!
Now a treasured memory
Our family stay at Casale Sonnino was beyond anything we could have imagined! True, we expected what we saw in the photos and what information we had from our conversations with Claire. . . so our expectations were pretty high. The surprises lay in the reality of immersing ourselves into the authenticity of Casale Sonnino: the kindness & genuine warmth of George and the staff; the awesome beauty of the vistas that surround the Casale for miles & miles into the distance (think -- acres of undulating plains, vines & olive trees, with metropolitan Rome ever in the background); the cleanliness & comfort of bedrooms & baths; the incredible luncheon spread -- such a welcomed surprise upon our weary arrival; the delectable coffee/breakfasts (& cleanup) served with smiles & laughter every morning; the most welcoming outdoor pergola where we could so beautifully relax as a group; the top floor deck with it's unsurpassed views of Rome & the countryside; George's fascinating tour of the caves beneath the house & his family history; the riotous bloom & scent of spring flowers (jasmine! evergreen! roses!) ever present in the air. All in all, Casale Sonnino literally reverberated with pulse of our family group of eleven!! Our group spent an incredible week listening to music, visiting the many villages close by (Tivoli gardens a personal favorite), claiming a quiet spot to read or chat or discuss the day, using the charming & well-equipped kitchen to prepare meals. What we loved most was the drop-dead gorgeous views of the Italian countryside from every window & every garden resting place! Like living in a painting! We are grateful to Claire & George for sharing such a paradise with our family. . .
Wow! Thank you so much for this incredible review! It is our pleasure to share our family home with guests who enjoy with gusto and inhale all the surprises put before them. Now you are family - come back soon!
A Great Family Christmas vacation!
We spent 2 weeks at Casale Sonnino over Christmas and New Year. George was very accommodating for our large family. We had a wonderful breakfast every morning and enjoyed some lovely days lounging around the house. We were visiting family and hosted a Christmas eve potluck and a catered New Years Eve party. George and crew made the room beautiful, purchasing a large Christmas tree, which future guests can enjoy. And he even bought some fireworks for midnight on New Years eve. The New Years eve view from the terrace was amazing and so much more than we expected! We could see the fireworks all over Rome, absolutely stunning! The dinner was catered by the restaurant and winery next door, Agriturismo Palotta. Both the food and wine were delicious. We even visited the winery for a tasting prior to the party to choose our wines. The service staff were very accommodating at the house. We had many lovely evenings cooking in the kitchen. The olive oil is delicious and lucky for us they were just getting that year’s oil ready. So we bought a couple litres to bring home. I would absolutely return without hesitation! I would love to go in the summer sometime to enjoy the gardens and the outdoor areas.
