Come enjoy our cottage nestled in the Manistee National Forest on the north shore, sunny side, of upper Hamlin Lake. The cottage is only 7 years old with like new furnishings and is very neat and CLEAN. You will enjoy a panoramic view of the entire upper lake and awesome sunsets over the dunes right from shore. Fishing is great right off the docks. Boating, swimming, skiing, hiking, wine tasting, and other fun activities are waiting just for you! There is also a shared lakeside firepit for your use. Lake Michigan is minutes away for an afternoon picnic or swim. Golfing at some of the state's finest courses is close by. Or, for those who like more physical activity, bring your bikes for riding on the miles of trails in the National Forest. If you prefer peace and quiet, bring a good book to read while sipping on your favorite beverage in a lounge chair by the lake! NEW THIS YEAR WE HAVE A PONTOON BOAT FOR RENT!! ASK DEB FOR DETAILS.
I was raised on Hamlin Lake and have always loved it here. Our family came to the cottage for every family vacation, enjoying the wildlife, fishing, swimming, walks in the woods, climbing trees, feeding the swans, enjoying a glass of wine by the fire, and the list goes on and on. Now it is time to share this with others. We moved to the lake in 2000 and now live on the property year round. Your cottage is approximately 200' from the lakeshore.
Deb Hulst purchased this cottage in 1930
Grandma and Grandpa wanted to get out of the City of Chicago in the 1930's. They summered on the North Shore of Upper Hamlin Lake several times and realized that this is where they wanted to live. When this property became available in the 1930's they jumped on it. We added the vacation rental in 2005, only beginning the rental of it in the spring of 2009.
We enjoy watching the hummingbirds in the morning, sitting on the front porch with our cup of coffee. The lake always offers beauty and entertainment, whether it be fishing, boating, skiing, tubing, or just riding in the pontoon boat to the dunes. Living on the lake year round is awesome. All seasons are fun and exciting! Snowmobiling right out our backdoor....who could ask for more! We take our winter vacation in places where it is warm, but the sunsets never come close to the beautiful colors right here in Michigan. Icefishing, too, is great on Hamlin Lake!
We were able to spend Labor Day Weekend at this cabin! What a wonderful, relaxing time! The cabin was clean, well-furnished, and just perfect for the two of us! The view was gorgeous....it was a beautiful setting! We enjoyed our quiet time there and can't wait to go again!! Deb and Mark (the owners) are so friendly and accommodating (without being intrusive!)! The whole place had a calm and peaceful feeling! We are planning another visit....hopefully, soon!!
The cabin on Lake Hamlin was really cute, good view of the lake from the living room window. There is everything you need. We really enjoyed the little porch with the view of the lake for eating meals. Deb and Mark are super nice people who were very accommodating. They live on the premises so they are there if you need anything. The cabin is close to Ludington and the state park and Lake Michigan with lots of things to do and places to eat. We really enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this cabin to anyone.
as advertised. the other reviews are spot on! Mark and Deb are wonderful hosts and were sure to advise and tend to our needs. very very enjoyable stay. the cabin/cottage/house....was immaculate! the boat was perfect! the advise received from Mark is spot on! From the best way to gas up to the best place for produce! we could not be happier with our stay and hosts. It was great to be "off the beaten path". directions were spot on and easy to follow. Wifi update worked well and cell service is just fine. updated TV with Driect TV (prob wont use it much with all the property and area has to offer!) short drive into Ludington and great hiking trails at the end of the dirt road. wonderful area. beautiful weather. could not have asked for more. we will return! thanks Mark and Deb! I cannot begin to express our gratitude for a wonderful stay.
We just spent a delightful week at "The Shadows"! The cottage is everything the other reviewers have said. So clean and well stocked with everything you will need for cooking. Spending days at the beautiful beach at Ludington State Park, hiking in the woods for miles. Stopping in the woods to watch a doe and her fawn, fishing off the dock. It was really a wonderful quiet relaxing week. We couldn't have asked for more.
Thank you Deb and Mark for making your lovely cottage available!
Book with confidence. The units at "The Shadows" are impossibly clean (are we really on a lake?. . where are the bugs and spiders? where is the ubiquitous musty cabin smell?) and very well maintained. The owners are committed to their rentals as business with continual upkeep and are not just holding their extra property open for rental on the side. While they are 100% attentive to needs, they are also careful to give the renters privacy and space -- which is important, since their house is also on the same lot. 2 rental units and one home are all on the same lake frontage, although they are positioned perpendicular to the lake, leaving the open lake-front feel instead being shoulder to shoulder crowding the lake.
As far as the location, if you are looking at these units, you probably know that this is one of only two locations to explore miles of untouched national forest in the lower peninsula. We hiked through the wilderness for miles daily, with the payoff of reaching Lake Michigan every time, and then took advantage of the added benefit of the available pontoon rental for more of the "citified" vacation feel back at the cottage.
Summary: price, location, upkeep, amenities. . .√√√√
First time renting on VRBO and this cottage did not disappoint. Beautiful, clean and so relaxing. Deb and Mark were great to deal with. We had a wedding at Lake Michigan Rec and it was close by, so it was perfect.
Morrell Mushroom hunting, Little River Casino, snowshoeing, icefishing, 2 firepits.
