This exquisite “Sunset Place” home has its own boat dock and is in a premier location on the northeast lakeshore of Flathead Lake in northwestern Montana. You have magnificent views both south and west on Flathead Lake and views of westerly mountains. Flathead Lake is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, covers over 191 square miles and is one of the cleanest in the world. Plus this home is located within a short walking distance from downtown Bigfork (shopping, five-star restaurants, art galleries and playhouse theater), has a nearby public boat ramp and golf course (with numerous other golf courses in the Flathead Valley) and within an hour from Glacier National Park or Whitefish Mountain and Blacktail Mountain hiking and ski areas. Glacier International Airport is located within 45 minutes of this home.
“Sunset Place” is a newer, two-level 4,000 square foot, Montana-style home. There are stunning views of Flathead Lake and nearby mountains. Massive, “hand-scraped” Montana logs have been used in the vaulted ceiling and pillars, along with custom wood railings throughout the main living and stairway area.
This home is located in very serene neighborhood where the homes are very close in proximity to the lake and each other. Sunset place is a wonderful home to unplug, relax and enjoy the best this area has to offer. Respecting the quaintness of the neighborhood this should not be considered a party house or location. This home will wonderfully accommodate 6 adults and perhaps 2-3 children. We ask and the rental agreement strongly disallows large groups. Due to covenants, we cannot rent for less than two weeks.
The main floor includes an open, light entryway, kitchen, wet bar, dining area, living area, guest bathroom, laundry room, master bedroom and bathroom suite, two outdoor patios, natural gas barbecue and two single-car garages. The second level includes an open den/office area and two master bedroom/bathroom suites both with outdoor access to upper balcony patios.
The custom interior is elegantly furnished in Montana style and includes:

Carl and Bert Herndon are long time residents of Bigfork. This wonderful town is where we chose to raise our family. Since the kids are grown, we now 'winter' in a warmer climate but will always come back to Bigfork for the Summer and Fall. Bigfork is a magical village with outdoor activities for everyone and stunning views everywhere you look.
Bert Herndon purchased this house in 2012
This stunning property is so close to Bigfork, you can walk downtown in a matter of minutes, yet far enough way to be quiet.
Just returned from a magical two weeks at Bert's lovely and extremely well equipped lakefront house in Bigfork. This location is incredibly convenient to everything one wants to experience in Glacier country( 40 min. from Glacier National Park, 20 min. from Kalispel, 30 min. from Polson, 45 min from Whitefish and about 40 min from the FBO at Glacier Jet Center ). The town of Bigfork is a 5 minute walk from the house and everything you need (food store, restaurants, shopping, trail rides, hiking the local trails(especially the Wild Mile in Bigfork along the Swan river) etc. is very convenient). Bert was incredibly responsive throughout the booking process and with respect to a few small problems we encountered when we arrived. The lake is magnificent and the house is perfectly positioned for the nightly sunset display. We used all three bedrooms and found the house very comfortable for all of us and our two Bouviers. We have rented throughout the West and we highly recommend this property and this owner.
Due to the unusually cool summer, our trip happened to coincide with the peak of fall foliage in Glacier this year. It was spectacular. The Flathead and Swan Valleys have been one of our favorite (and most frequent) vacation destinations these last 14 years, but we had never seen it in September until now. It was just beautiful. The house was great, it was well appointed, the kitchen had all the necessities, (including cooking spices, etc), and the sunsets were amazing. My three year old daughter had to "take care of the trees" by hugging every one of them each time she climbed the stairs. It's a memory we will all enjoy for years to come. It is easily one of the nicest vacation rentals around "greater Bigfork", but what truly sets this one apart is its owner. She went out of her way to keep our vacation relaxed and worry free. She was so easy to deal with and kept the "rules" simple. Just treat the house like you would your own. That seems obvious to most people who would pay $5,000 a week for lodging but you might be surprised by the unreasonable rules at other area homes. We actually chose a home on neighboring Swan Lake initially, (despite the higher price tag), but the contract was so unreasonable, it was hard to imagine having any fun at all. Who wants to spend their vacation worried about getting fined for leaving the TV remote on the wrong table? That's when we found Bert's beautiful home, but what sold us on this rental was her easy going nature. This was a beautiful property with a very helpful and pleasant owner, and it made for a perfect vacation. We would encourage anyone considering a stay in Bigfork to call Bert and decide for yourself. We will definitely rent from her again when we return. (Although we might try out the Swan River property next time just for fun.) EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE! ABSOLUTELY CHOOSE THIS RENTAL! (Oh, and the deposit was returned in full the day after we checked out.) - Thanks again for a great time!
This was our first trip to Montana, and we happily chose Bigfork, mainly for the house. We were not disappointed! This is a wonderful house on the lake, and the owner was exceptional. It was immaculate, both inside and out. The dock is great for renting boats and kayaks. The town is delightful; we walked to town and also took the Swan River Trail from town. The people are friendly, and the restaurants are great. We were surprised how good the wine shop is for a small town. We are looking forward to returning next summer.
We recently spent 2 weeks on Flathead at this incredible lake house! The house is located within walking distance of Bigfork yet peaceful. It's setup wonderfully with comfortable beds, a full featured kitchen, wireless internet, and more. The view from the living room, patio, and dock are stunning as the sunsets. Everyone also have a great time catching some fish right from the dock! When we had a few questions, the owner was very responsive and accommodating. I highly recommend this home for your vacation needs!
We stayed here after 4 days of hiking. It was a nice way to wind down our trip. The house is off the charts. Beautifully designed. This house is immaculate and very comfortable. No expense was spared when it came to building this home. The locations is awesome too. You are right near town and some great restaurants. You absolutely must rent a paddle board from Montana Adventure Sports. The owner..Renny dropped off and picked up the paddle board himself. I would highly recommend this property to anyone traveling to the area. Our favorite stop in town was Sweet Peaks. Great ice cream.
This lakefront home was an amazing property and house. The listing pictures do not do this property justice. The place is BETTER than the pictures. It's large and spacious. The owner has thoughtfully stocked the house with so many extras - besides just the basics. The decor is unbelievable and it makes you feel right at home the minute you walk through the door.
The bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, and all of the rooms were clean, clean, clean.... and newly decorated and stocked. It felt like we had just moved into a brand new home.
The beds were amazingly comfortable and the bedding for the kids on the floor, including mattress pads and blow up air mattresses were clean and high quality.
Everything about this house was HIGH quality. The owner provided superior service and communication. The house was full of amentities - from the well stocked kitchen (pots, pans, plates, cups, bowls, utensils, and gadgets) to the bathrooms with soap, shampoo, and lotions. Lots of closest space with hangars.
And that is just the inside. Outside landscaping is beautiful and well maintained. The backyard facing the lake was a perfect place with high quality outdoor table and chairs. Perfect for sunning, bbq, and sunset watching. We saw quite the shows every day of the eagles, ospreys, and swallows. It was amazing. And the sunsets were spectacular. No wonder the street is called "Sunset Place".
There is a large gas bbq grill and fireplace on the side of the house. The two separate garages were spacious and secure..
Overall, our experience was excellent and far exceeded our expectations. It was definitely one of the nicest places we have ever vacationed in - plus felt "homey". Our experience was almost perfect. There is new home construction during the weekdays nearby and loud saws and pounding were ongoing from morning through the afternoon and very loud when we sat outside. Inside, the noise wasn't too bad - demonstrating how well insulated it was.
The location of the house is SO close to Big Fork. We walked there every day. We also found nearby trails to hike and run in beautiful settings - by either foot or drive-to. Some of our parties fished the North and Middle Fork Rivers - and were very successful. We hiked the nearby Jewel Basin and Glacier National Park is a relatively short drive away.
We would highly recommend this vacation home to anyone-summer, fall, winter, or spring. It has it all!
Thank you to our wonderful host
