Our family moved from New Hampshire to East Side Rd, on Barter Island. Dick is a builder and I am a retired Real Estate Appraiser. Our daughter attended Tabor Academy, and our son attended Kents Hill School. Our son lives in Brooklyn and out daughter lives in Livingston Manor, NY., with our one grandchild, Ameila Daisy. We did a total rehab on the Island House. We are pet less, since our last Lab died.
We keep a 30 ft, SeaRay in the Harbor at Browns Wharf and belong to the Downeast Yacht Club, a real boating club.
Brenda Wood purchased this house in 1987
Barters Island is real community with an old time store which serves the best lobster rolls, crabmeat rolls, other fish, pizza and breakfast sandwiches while is located on the water next to the swing bridge. Approx less than 1/2 mile to stroll to for breakfast or lunch. We are approx. 1 mile to the now famous Botanical Gardens, which has lots of programs throughout the year. There are serveral Land Trust Preserve trails located on the Island: Porter Point, School House Preserve. Tibbets Island and Timber Island Preserve to kayak to on Back River.
The Island is approx. 4.3 miles long and 1 mile wide for walking or biking.
Very safe and may leave cars unlocked and doors open.
The Island is very quite, with working lobster boats. Lots of shore birds and eagles and Canada geese. Osprey soring from their nests, fishing for their new born baby chicks. Very peaceful reading a book while relaxing on our float or enjoy[ng the enclosed, screened breezeway with a saltwater breeze.
Beautiful location about 10 minutes from Boothbay Harbor with plenty to do in the area for all ages. The house comfortably accommodated 2 grandparents, 2 parents, and 2 young children (ages 5 and 7). The property has a large backyard and the front looks out onto the river with lovely views and includes a dock with lounge chairs for relaxing next to the water. At low tide, my kids enjoyed walking out and catching mussels for dinner!
There were lots of activities that the whole family could enjoy - great hiking trails (definitely check out porters preserve, which is very close to the house), Maine Botanical Gardens, Knickerbocker lake, and Boothbay Harbor with shops and restaurants. Also a very nice golf course (Boothbay Country Club) within 5-10 min drive. There is an aquarium close by as well - good for the kids on a rainy day or to take a break from the outdoors. Would also recommend recommend Hendricks Head Beach in Southport for the kids. Biking is good, but the roads are pretty hilly and narrow, so younger children may have a tough time and you need to watch carefully for cars.
The house was well maintained and clean. Beautiful wood floors and nice furnishings. All bedrooms are upstairs and the steps could be a challenge for elderly or very small children so plan accordingly. We cooked in the kitchen a number of nights with no problems - it was well stocked with all you need to prepare a meal for the entire family.
The owners were very attentive throughout our stay and checked in to ensure we had what we needed. All in all, a great vacation home in a great location!
This property was perfect for our family vacation. The house is easy to find and conveniently located close to Boothbay Harbor town, grocery stores, etc. It is in a quiet setting with amazing views. The grounds are well kept. We enjoyed sitting on the chairs overlooking the water and the peace and quiet of the front yard.
There are several hiking trails nearby. Porters Preserve was our favorite and now holds a special place in our hearts.
The home is an older home but well maintained. It is clean, very comfortable and well kept. The kitchen is well equipped with everything we needed, even a few spices. If you choose to rent the linens, there is an ample amount supplied as well as towels. The size of the home was perfect for 8 of us.
I appreciated the owners accommodating us with a fold away bed for my mother who couldn’t climb stairs. They stopped by on the first day to make sure everything was good and we could tell their cared about their guests.
I would definitely rent here again. It was a most memorable vacation.
Located 3 miles East of Boothay Harbor in the Village of Trevett, our Island is accessed from the mainland via the last remaining hand operated swing bridge in Maine. Relax and enjoy the charm of years gone by at this 2 acre downeast location with lobster boats working among the shore birds, osprey and eagles. The Old Trevett Store next to the bridge offers fried seafood, lobster rolls, live lobsters and a Post Office. A short mile beyond, you will find the entrance to the renowned Boothbay Botanical Gardens, and you will enjoy an 18 hole golf 1.5 miles beyond the Gardens.
