About Richard and Karen

We love spending time at our Heron House when it isn't being enjoyed by our guests. We named it Heron House because of the herons we've seen flying up the canal, nesting right across the canal and the herons on the front entry doors. Since Heron House is an easy drive from our home base, we visit as often as possible to be sure that everything is maintained as we would want if we were living here full time.

The rest of our time is spent with sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren in Salinas, CA or Lafayette, OR or Seguin, TX or cruising to anywhere. But, of all places, we like being in Cape Coral the best. There is so much to do, the people are so friendly, and you can't beat the weather!

Richard and Karen purchased this house in 2007

Why Richard and Karen chose Florida South Central Gulf Coast

There are hundreds of activities and locations to enjoy within a drive of less than 30 minutes. From fantastic beaches to spring training and minor league baseball games, from swanky five diamond restaurants to hole-in-the-wall eateries, from ritzy department stores to one of the world's largest flea markets you can find more than enough to keep you busy. For longer day trips, you can easily spend the day in Fort Lauderdale or Miami and be back to the Heron House for dinner on the lanai pool-side.

We bought the Heron House because we fell in love with the Cape Coral environs and when we finally saw the house with the great herons on the entryway doors we knew immediately it was the right place for us. We know you'll feel the same when you walk through the front doors!

What makes this house unique

Relax and enjoy the quiet neighborhood and the calm, soothing tropical gardens surrounding our canal-side property, lounging in the hot tub or the screened pool, listening to the pool's waterfall. The bikes in the garage can be used to travel the flat, little trafficked neighborhood streets or to ride on sidewalks and bike paths to the nearby Publix grocery and Target department store. When the weather isn't cooperating, take advantage of the more than 80 channels on the cable TV or choose from the more than 100 movies in our video collection or just lay around and listen to the 46 music channels on cable and read a good book from our small library.

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying with us for your mini-vacation - all the way from Florida's Atlantic shores. The Gulf has its very own charm - quiet, restful, easy-going. The Heron House is located almost in the geographical center of Cape Coral which does put it close to everything! We're glad you chose to stay with us. Thank you for taking such good care of our home. We hope you'll come back soon. Karen and Richard

Owner's Response: We are really glad you enjoyed your stay. We'll pass on your comments to our super housekeeper. She really does an exceptional job, which is especially difficult on short turnover days. She has been helping us for years and has always made sure that the Heron House is completely ready when our guests arrive. We were also pleased to get your text about catching all the fish from the dock on the canal. Come back and stay when you get a chance. You were really great guests. Richard and Karen PS - Thanks for your text message comments about the comfort of the mattress in the master bedroom. I was glad to provide you with the name of the manufacturer (Sealy} and the model number. We like it better than our own in the condo where we live.

A Wonderful Experience

  • 5 of 5

Thanks, Richard and Karen, for sharing your home with our family. We thoroughly enjoyed the location and the house was fabulous. Our family took advantage of the well-appointed kitchen, lovely bedrooms, and pool and hot tub. In town for my father's 90th birthday party, our boys, my husband, and I enjoyed having a central meeting place when we were not visiting family. We had easy access to relatives living in Fort Myers and Cape Coral as well as to shopping. Although we didn't make it to the beach this trip, it was certainly close by. The house had everything we needed and lots more!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind words, Maggie. We strive to make sure all of our guests have a great experience at the Heron House. We are pleased that your stay was an excellent one. Thank you for being so flexible and allowing our maintenance contractor to work on the boat lift one afternoon - we had scheduled him to do the work after your departure but he showed up days early and you volunteered to let him do the work. Thank you so much for that - future guest will appreciate the improvements to the boat deck which will make for better fishing and relaxing on the deck over the canal. As you were leaving, the rain gutter contractor showed up two hours early and you graciously allowed them to begin the installation of the rain gutters. Again, future guests will appreciate the new rain gutters installed all around but most importantly over the front portico. You left the house and the grounds so spotless and, it seemed, as good as you found it when you checked in. Our housekeeper always does a fantastic job - and you helped make this change-over much easier for her. Thanks again for that. We really do hope you'll have a chance to return to Cape Coral and the Heron House and that you'll get a chance then to enjoy our great beaches.

Wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Richards place was very comfortable, it was everything that was described. It was close to the places we wanted to go. The weather was perfect. We picked this place so our grandchildren could come down and visit us. We all enjoyed the pool and hot tub. What was surprising was that we were able to sit on the lanai even though the temperatures were in the low 90's. The fans kept it nice. The house had everything we needed. It was very worth the price of staying there.

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying at our Heron House. We really enjoyed having you there. We were pleased how clean and neat you left the house! We agree that the lanai is fantastic - even on the hottest days - because, while the pool stays in the sun all day, the lanai is totally shaded and the two ceiling fans keep the air flowing. It's a great place to relax, eat your meals, or entertain. We are able to keep our rental rates so low because we have great guest like you. We hope to see you back soon. Regards, Richard and Karen

Amazing Home!!!!

  • 5 of 5

This property is beautiful inside and out from the open floor plan inside to the amazing pool and landscaping to the boat dock out back.

The heron house has everything you need for your stay, the only thing we needed to buy was food!!

Grilled lots of meals by the pool and spent many relaxing nights in the hot tub

Caught lots of fish off the boat dock and enjoyed the sunrises and sunsets!!

Sanibel island is close and is a must if you enjoy sea shells!! Miles and miles of shells!!

Plan to come back soon.

This home is a perfect choice for a cpl or a family.

Great neighborhood, and close to Target, Publix, and Walmart!!

Richard was very nice and helpful to questions we had.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Shawn and Amanda. It was great to meet you while I was on site supervising the yard maintenance folks. We're glad I was able to answer your questions and really glad you enjoyed Cape Coral and environs. You're right about Sanibel - so many shells - and the "shellscape" changes drastically with every storm or really high tide so it never gets old. Not only is the fishing great right off the dock at the Heron House but so many other places, like off the bridges to Matlacha (mat la shay'). Try more of them next chance you have to visit. Freshwater fishing in the canals is really close, as well, at the dam on the south side of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Kamal Parkway, the street on the other side of our Mast Canal. A short, level, bike ride from Heron House with bike lanes all the way. You and Amanda were great guests, leaving every thing as clean and neat as it was when you arrived. Thanks for taking such good care of our home. We sincerely hope you'll be able to come back soon. Regards, Richard and Karen

A beautiful and comfortable house for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

My family of four greatly enjoyed the comfort, space and facilities at Heron house. Everything met our expectations and what had been advertised through the website. Lots of restaurants and shopping centres nearby. For us it was a perfect place to relax and unwind after an intense week in Orlando. Thanks for letting us stay.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments. We're glad you had a great stay. There are a lot of things to do in the Cape Coral area but not quite of the intensity of Orlando and our Heron House is perfect for relaxing. We hope you'll come back soon.
