About Roger Jenkins

Retired Professor and Dean

Roger Jenkins purchased this chateau / country house in 1990

Why Roger Jenkins chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

I was born in this small rural community and have been privileged to travel around the world with my work. I have found no place in the world I think is overall more enjoyable and impressive than the mountains, streams, and quiet natural beauty of this community.

Because Penland School has, over the years, spawned so many artists who have relocated to this area, there are literally hundreds of artists located within an hour of the property.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

With the most impressive mountain views from the front porch while sitting in a red rocking chair, you find yourself wrapped in natural beauty on this private, gated, 27 acre farm. Not many places provide the unique opportunity to walk from your bed to a beautiful trout stream on property and land a 18 inch brown trout within minutes, then, In season, you walk a few hundred hards and enjoy blueberries, rasberries, and blackberries.

Owner's Response: These guests treated the Farmhouse like they would their own. Left it squeaky, spic and span clean. THANk YOU. What can I say .... the doughnuts were pretty darn good..... hand made from Blackbird Bakery in Bristol, Tennessee! But he didn't mention the GREAT trout fishing .... best trout fishing in many summers because of the rain! He didn't mention the views from the front porch red rockers! He didn't mention that in one hour you can be at the Biltmore House in Asheville, or at Grandfather Mountain, or in Boone or Blowing Rock in one hour! Or that you can be on the Appalachian Trail at two different points in 5 minutes; or at the most frequently traveled portion (and rated highest by hikers of all AT) of the AT at Roan Mountain in 30 minutes! But happy he noticed the GREAT beds! We just came back from a $700 a night rental in Sea Island Georgia where the furnishings for the condo were pitiful compared to mine here at the Red Roof Farmhouse. There was no shampoo, no hair dryer, no kitchen towels, no dishwashing liquid, no soap, no paper towels,.... kitchen furnishings were almost nonexistent........bedding was cheap and awful! Made me appreciate the Red Roof Farmhouse!

Red Roof Farmhouse

We stayed for 10 days at this wonderful place. It really felt like home to us. Being able to sit on the front porch and just take in the view and the sound of the creek was amazing. It was amazing to just sit and forget. The owners were the most generous and nice people. They brought us fresh produce and baked goods that were delicious. We can't wait to come back next year for our annual family vacation. Roger took our son down to the creek so they could throw apples and let their dog Chloe fetch. That was the highlight of my son's trip. Can't thank them enough for making our trip so memorable.

Owner's Response: This couple from Texas and their precious son had the time of their life enjoying the estate and the surrounding areas. They took advantage of almost everything. But, they didn't take advantage of trophy trout waters just steps from the front door (although they did enjoy the sound of the creek at night when they slept especially). And just a few steps up the creek I have a large berry patch (blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries) Berries were at peak while they were here and they weren't berry eaters! First folks I know who didn't go there once a day to fill up! They left the house pristine and in order. I could not have enjoyed them more, and absolutely am delighted they have committed for their 10 day vacation next summer! GREAT folks!

Arrived exhausted - departed refreshed.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I live in Raleigh, NC and like most people, life is lived at a fairly intense pace. We needed to get away and unplug from life. We found the Red Roof Farmhouse on VRBO. When we arrived we walked into an impeccably clean home. It was easy to feel instantly at home. We like to cook dinners together and found the kitchen outfitted with everything we could possibly need. We slept like babies in the king size bed! But now to the most favorite part of our stay. The front porch!!! The front of the home has a beautiful covered porch with red rocking chairs. Just in front of the porch is an incredible cottage garden filled with all kinds of lovely flowers and loads of butterflies. The view from the porch is a mountain range that is absolutely beautiful to gaze upon. While we took a few day trips and had some wonderful hikes, we thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent reading, talking, dozing and enjoying the view from the rocking chairs on the front porch! We would love to go back next year and take our grandchildren. The property is safe and fun for children to run and play and the stream would be a ball for them to explore. The owner was very attentive to us and responded immediately to every question we had. If you need to be refreshed, this is the place to come!!!! (Tom and Carol - Raleigh, NC)

Owner's Response: The "blooming season" was perfect for Carol and Tom. The gardens surrounding the home were in full fragrant bloom with every color from white to pink to red..... and hundreds of butterflies were flitting around. Phlox, Asiatic lilies, day lilies, catchfly, iris, - blankets of bloom. Because of lots of rain, I've never seen the gardens strut their stuff so flamboyantly! No couple has ever left the Red Roof Farmhouse as perfectly as when thy walked in. Carol and Tom did! LOVED this couple and can't wait for them to return.

Would highly recommend this hidden gem!!

Oh wow! Where to start? This is a beautiful, 27+ acre remote farm land hidden inbetween Boone and Asheville!

The owner was very engaged and responsive with all questions and concerns regarding our 2 week extended stay. He provided numerous details and information to ensure we were well taken care of prior to our trip and arrival. Upon arrival, the key was waiting and no issues at all! We immediately felt like we belonged!

The Mountain Grill: You must try it! This little grill is not much bigger than a backyard storage shed, but they offer awesome milkshakes & numerous grilled items! They are one of the only restaurants for miles around & they stay busy. I advise to call in your order so there is no wait. The best thing about it is the lady running the place. The first night we landed there, we stopped by and placed a $30 order, but only had a debit card. They do not take cards & only accept cash/check. After I told her we were staying in the Red Roof Farmhouse for 2 weeks, she agreed to give us a tab for the meal that night. Of course we honored our commitment & paid her right away once we were able to locate cash the next day, but this example tells you of the kind of people you are dealing with in this wonderful small town.

Cash: You can get it from the gas station 3 miles south or a Cash Points atm 8-10 miles south. She charges 5%, but it's convenient!

The "locals": We enjoyed seeing some of the locals/family. They are a small community & it takes many folks to operate some of the farming (Corn, berries and other crops). You'll enjoy watching the cows across the street too. Make sure to bring binoculars. It was so fun to sit on the porch & watch all of nature happening before our eyes! The butterflies!!

There's so much more I could write, but I don't have the room on this limited review. Wireless internet is strong (I did remote work the first week) & no issues. There are also landlines so you will not go without phone service. We had Verizon & the phones worked; data was not always great. We enjoyed white water rafting on the French Broad outside of Asheville, tubing on the local Toe River & a couple trips over to Boone. We also went on Roan Mountain & were able to see the property from miles out on a clear day from the bluff.

This is one of the best deals if you are looking for remote, land & water along with 2nd to none service. The owner actually had us over to his home for breakfast as well. You really feel like a local around here!

Owner's Response: Fell in love with this. beautiful family - young couple with three beautiful daughters. it was a joy to see them enjoy the creek, picking blueberries and raspberries, and exploring the entire the Roan mountain, Boone, Blowing Rock, Asheville, etc. I was so happy to see the great experience at The Mountain Grill. The owner is a good friend of mine and always is courteous, kind, and thoughtful as she cooks burger and shakes second to none! When my own kids come to visit, they aways stop at the Mountain Grill first to have a "snack.'and shake! Because these folks had a two week stay, and I was at home myself, I was able to drop off fresh peaches, corn, tomatoes, muffins, and baked goods to surprise them! I am looking forward to their return!

Beautiful Property! Perfect Stay!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to the Red Roof Farmhouse and everything was perfect once again. The owner and his family were very helpful and a pleasure to talk with. We mostly relaxed around the house and enjoyed the pleasant weather and views out on the front porch, especially in the evenings. We fished a good bit in Big Rock Creek flowing through the property and caught several rainbow trout and just enjoyed the cool flowing water. On this visit we also ventured up to the top of Roan Mountain and enjoyed the walking trails and gardens up there. And, as always, we made a few trips down to the Mountain Grill and enjoyed a variety of meals and treats including hamburgers, Philly cheese steak sandwiches, salads, chicken fingers, fried pickles, and milkshakes. This has become a favorite destination of our family and we will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: LOVE this precious family, and look forward to their return. It's folks like this who make me continue to make sure the Red Roof Farm Estate is always at it's best. Happy they got to go to the Roan Mountain (about 30 min away) to hike. My favorite place! The hike along the top of the Roan Balds (on the Appalachian Trail) is ranked by hikers as the most beautiful part of the AT. The Mountain Grill is such a treasure - and only a few hundred yards away! Hard to find a better hamburger or milkshake anywhere! When my children come to visit, they always stop there first.
