About Roger Jenkins

Retired Professor and Dean

Roger Jenkins purchased this chateau / country house in 1990

Why Roger Jenkins chose Bakersville

I was born in this small rural community and have been privileged to travel around the world with my work. I have found no place in the world I think is overall more enjoyable and impressive than the mountains, streams, and quiet natural beauty of this community.

Because Penland School has, over the years, spawned so many artists who have relocated to this area, there are literally hundreds of artists located within an hour of the property.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

With the most impressive mountain views from the front porch while sitting in a red rocking chair, you find yourself wrapped in natural beauty on this private, gated, 27 acre farm. Not many places provide the unique opportunity to walk from your bed to a beautiful trout stream on property and land a 18 inch brown trout within minutes, then, In season, you walk a few hundred hards and enjoy blueberries, rasberries, and blackberries.

Beautiful Family Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 recently stayed at this beautiful property. You can't beat the setting, with its room for kids to roam and a well-stocked trout stream where my husband easily caught 20 fish in two days. The owner is very friendly and welcoming, stopping by to bring us homemade brownies and local apples. The house is situated on the edge of a very small mountain community, so you see buildings from the house, but the overall feel is quiet and seclusion. It was an easy drive to Roan Mountain. There is a nearby (walkable) hamburger place that makes great meals, but I would suggest calling your order in, as we waited over an hour for our dinner. But it was worth the wait! The neighbors were also friendly and let my boys feed their chickens and gave us farm fresh eggs and potatoes picked from their garden - we had wonderful, fresh breakfasts! The cabin itself is laid out well for families, with two large master bedrooms and a smaller room with twin beds. We felt that we each had our own space and privacy yet there are also two gathering areas for larger groups. The kitchen was very well stocked with spices, paper towels, garbage bags, etc. The quality of the furnishings was also nicer than most rentals, and it is obvious that the owner pays attention to detail. We can't wait to visit again soon!

Owner's Response: Rarely have I enjoyed a guest family more! Watching Dad teach his three sons fly fishing was a joy, being a fly fisherman!!!!! Watching Mom care for her beautiful three sons while giving loving devotion to her own Mom whom had recently lost her husband was touching. They really enjoyed the home and property and made two trips to Roan Mountain to hike. I do hope they come back. i sensed the boys created lots of memories. One of the twin six year old boys related to me the story of my neighbor showing them their chickens, giving them eggs, and how he scrambled his own eggs the next morning! This little cute city slicker won't forget this and will remember it overtime he has eggs. They were able to pick a few remaining raspberries of the season. This surgeon's patients should see what a gentle, loving devoted and caring Father, husband, and son-in-law this cool dude is.

This property is more than we could have hoped for!!

  • 5 of 5

We will definitely go back!! We stayed at The Red Roof Farmhouse for a quick family getaway and it was amazing. We were only there for two nights and that wasn't nearly enough time to enjoy everything that this property has to offer. Thank you Mr. Jenkins for providing such an amazing place and hopefully we will get to met you next time we are there.

Owner's Response: Sadly, I wasn't able to connect/met with the family while here, although i was able to make sure they got some of the Jenkins infamous homemade double chocolate brownies! My son-in-law's dad was fly fishing on the property and the spontaneous connection the family's son had with him and a few lessons was a memory for both. Anxious to meet this family next visit.

Owner's Response: This energetic, dynamic, and handsome fun young couple only had two days here, but they spent it like it was a month - soaking in all the beauty of the fall colors that were extremely late this year, and hiking in some neat places. I very much look forward to their return visit!

Immaculate home with plenty of space for 6

  • 5 of 5

Arrived to a great home with fresh apples and a fresh bake raisin and fruit bread in the refrigerator. The home is well equipped for a weekend stay. It was a bit farther from the Linville Falls area than would have been ideal for us on a rainy day, but that didn’t detract from our fun or from the charm of the home. And Mr. Jenkins goes out of his way to provide tips and info. Really great weekend for us.

Owner's Response: Following in the entire summer's footsteps of really great guests, this family was also just very special. Sadly, they only planned two days and it rained one of them. So they did not get to see/do as much as normally they could/would. I always encourage guests to do a minimum of three days, and that way if they want to see the area as opposed to sitting, resting, reading ..... they need one day to visit Elk River Falls, Banner Elk, Boone, Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountain; and one day to visit Asheville, and one day to hike on the Roan Mountain and/or Appalachian Trail. I hope they come back again soon!

The most relaxing place I've ever stayed!

  • 5 of 5

I've never had a more relaxing vacation in my life! The property, the view, the porch with rockers...all amazing! The Red Roof Farmhouse did not disappoint. It was absolutely beautiful, kitchen well equipped with everything you could possibly need and then some, plenty of sitting room (which I have usually found lacking in other places), the beds were very comfortable, the towels and linens were awesome and the privacy on point! The owner had all the lights on and freshly baked brownies waiting for us, which made us feel as if we were visiting old friends. I would highly recommend this property for any vacation need you might have, but especially for a peaceful, quiet and relaxing get away. And don't forget to walk down to the Mountain Grill for an amazing burger and milkshake!

Owner's Response: I have my own retirement mountain home that we use a lot and it is on the mountaintop above the RRF. As I drove up to the bridge that crosses the creek and provides the entrance to the Red Roof Farmhouse Estate, i saw a couple sitting on the bridge arch talking. It was a picture perfect moment to see my guests had arrived, and had already found the peace, serenity, and beauty of the creek. This very sweet couple wanted to get away from everything and everyone ... and just have the peace and beauty of the mountains - they surely found it at the Red Roof Farmhouse Estate! Guests come from all walks of life - This gentleman owned a HVAC company and last weekend's guest was a world renown pediatric ENT surgeon. Each guest is different but all enjoy the same things!

Absolute Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in several VRBO's and Airbnb's and the Red Roof Farmhouse is absolutely the BEST we've enjoyed. Upon arrival, the house was open, aired and the most delicious goodies were waiting for us. The home itself had two king sized beds which are difficult to find when searching for a rental home. The furnishings are top quality and the owners have thought of everything. The home boasts of plenty! Plenty of towels, baskets of toiletries, extra blankets, pillows and even washer & dryer products. The kitchen has plenty of cleaning products, paper towels, dish towels, dishes, glassware, serving dishes, pots & pans and various appliances including coffee to espresso maker and hot chocolate.

This home is in the perfect location as well. We enjoyed Roan mountain and the Appalachian trail, Roan Mountain State Park and the Soap Shed in Spruce Pine. We wandered the hills and found such interesting and beautiful scenes from the past from rope bridges to old log cabins.

Upon returning one afternoon we arrived back to find fresh apples waiting for us thanks to the gracious hospitality of our hosts.

We've arrived back home here in SC and we're already begun to plan our next trip to Bulladean. On our future itinerary is pottery and glass blowing in Asheville, Little Switzerland and the local community theater playhouse in Burnsville.

Thanks to the Jenkins' for a very special weekend.

Owner's Response: Such a joy to host such wonderful people. And they respected the house and left it beautifully. They not only enjoyed sitting on the porch in the red rocking chairs to enjoy coffee in the morning and mountain views, but they also saw much of what the area had to offer. They didn't make it to Asheville and the Biltmore house, or to Grandfather Mountain or Blowing Rock, but as they said, there's next trip! They've also discovered the area's rich heritage based upon Penland School being close by and all the artists living in the county. Glass Blower and Potters around every bend! Can't wait for the Fultons to return!
