About Roger Jenkins
Retired Professor and Dean
Roger Jenkins purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1990
Why Roger Jenkins chose Bakersville
I was born in this small rural community and have been privileged to travel around the world with my work. I have found no place in the world I think is overall more enjoyable and impressive than the mountains, streams, and quiet natural beauty of this community. Because Penland School has, over the years, spawned so many artists who have relocated to this area, there are literally hundreds of artists located within an hour of the property.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
With the most impressive mountain views from the front porch while sitting in a red rocking chair, you find yourself wrapped in natural beauty on this private, gated, 27 acre farm. Not many places provide the unique opportunity to walk from your bed to a beautiful trout stream on property and land a 18 inch brown trout within minutes, then, In season, you walk a few hundred hards and enjoy blueberries, rasberries, and blackberries. Just installed large fire pit picnic area.

The Red Roof Farmhouse in beautiful Bakersville
We can't say enough about how beautiful this home and property is. The owner, Roger, was wonderdul. We will definitely be back!
Every morning as I drove by the house, all five guests were sitting on the porch in the red rockers with their coffee taking in the sweeping Mountain View’s and stream. They will be back.
Our Piece of Heaven
We come back every year to experience this little town. It really is a peaceful and relaxing place to get away from the every day life. This has become our place to recharge. Roger and his family are the best host. He brings the best baked goods for our family and also lets us know of places to explore while we are here. Thank you for always making our trip that much more special.
Since I've had the privilege of serving guests from all parts of the US (and several international visitors as well for six years, a large part of my rentals is return guests. This family has become part of my family. I've never seen a family embrace the area so FULLY .... from hiking on nearby Appalachian Trail, walking down to trout fish, walking to the berry patch for fresh berries for breakfast, to making S'Mores on the fire pit, to playing in the creek, to exploring nearby Asheville, Boone, Blowing Rock, Roan Mountain State Park, as well as the oldest city in Tennessee - Jonesboro (only 45 min away). Always look forward to their yearly (now twice yearly) visits
A stand out property
Everything about this property was as advertised. In a decade of renting properties thru VRBO, I have never seen one that is so frequently rented and yet remains in such a high state of cleanliness and repair... I chalk this up to an engaged owner who personally ensures his product is the best. Will stay here again in the future without hesitation.
What a special, special family! One of the joys of being the owner of a rental home is that you meet some incredible people from all walks of life. Right when I think I've met the nicest family to date, in walks another one that makes me shake my head. Watching father and son wade up the creek; the family sitting in the red rockers taking in the sunrise; or wandering around the fields .... cannot wait for them to join my huge % of return guests!
Red Roof Farm
The Red Roof Farm is by far our favorite rental. From the moment we walked in, we felt comfortable and right at home. It was so very clean, and stocked with everything we could possibly need. The giant front porch and rocking chairs kept us occupied every evening. The view of Roan Mountain is unbeatable, the sound of the stream is soothing and there were fresh berries for breakfast we picked ourselves. With two king bedrooms with attached bathrooms and an adorable room with twin beds, there is plenty of room for everyone. There is plenty of parking right by the door and it easily accessible for all ages.
We highly recommend Red Roof Farm and will stay there again next time we’re in the area. Communication with the owner was perfect and check-in/out was a snap.
Unfortunately, I am away on vacation myself this week and did not get to meet this couple who came to the area to attend the Roan Mountain Tennessee State Park Rhododendron Festival.... held each her and a huge event as the top of the mountain blooms in all it's glory with the world's largest natural display of rhodos. Delighted to see they were able to pick fresh blueberries and raspberries from my berry patch for breakfast and cobbler. They enjoyed all the amenities, especially the sound of the creek from their bedrooms and the red rockers on wrap around porch that shows showcases the mountains so beautifully. Look forward to meeting them on a return visit.
Wonderful Stay as Always
Once again, we enjoyed the perfect mountain scenery, rushing creek, blooming flowers and relaxing atmosphere. Mr. Jenkins delighted us with several baked goods, etc., during our stay which we thoroughly enjoyed. We enjoyed rocking on the porch and trout fishing as always, but we tried a few new things this time including: visited the federal fish hatchery in Erwin, TN (about 20 minutes away) to see the rainbow trout, visited Scott Strawberry Farm & Market (about 15 minutes away), took the kids to Hands On Discovery Center in Gray, TN, and visited Clarence's Drive In and Maple Grove Restaurant (Erwin, TN and Unicoi, TN) - both were great. We enjoyed our stay as always and will be back in the Fall/Winter if not before!
One of my favorite return family guests. They come back 3 to 4 times a year and it is like their home away from home. Seeing the children playing in the creek, sliding down the hills on cardboard boxes (and in winter on sleds), and enjoying S'Mores by the fire pit is richly rewarding.
