The Owner purchased this house in 2007
My husband and I fell in love with the beauty of the Hawaiian highlands with its unique rainforest growing on the slopes of an active volcano and the magical properties of Hawaii's 'Healing Isle.' We've furnished Ohana house to be the perfect home base to explore this fascinating region. You'll find Ohana house has all the comforts of home - a world away!
The property is very secluded and quiet. You have views of the rainforest with its giant tree ferns, ohia trees and wild ginger right out your window. The house is roomy and bright with all the comforts of home.
The house was so handy to Volcano National Park. The house was very very clean and so toasty warm. We all recommend it highly! Fun toys for kids.
The owner is so friendly and welcoming. Great place
What a beautiful and comfortable house. Our family had a totally unique experience being in the rain forest and near the volcanoes. Owner provided enough of everything to make it comfortable and convenient. It felt like an oasis in the middle of the jungle. It is hard to think that a gas fireplace is needed in Hawaii but with the altitude and occasional rain it was a welcome extra in the AM and late in the evening. Great spot!!
Red flags on this property!! Absentee owners may not have a cleaning service or local caretakers with their best interest in mind. Surface cleaning only. Carpets stained, kitchenware had a film so our first task was to empty all the cabinets and waged everything. We booked this property for five friends attending Merrie Monarch festivities. Fortunately we arrived before our friends to make property feel a little more welcoming. It's amazing, a few simple fresh flowers, Febreze to counter mildew smells and some island background music can give a warm welcome feeling. Ohana House could easily become a 5 star property with a little extra effort. Some deep cleaning (carpets professionally cleaned), upgrade old bedding (after 10 years you got your monies worth) pillows should've replaced every year. A broom to sweep porch might go on that list. I might add if you check out 11am, as published on your website owners might instruct their cleaning service that parking themselves on the front porch before 10am is bad form. What shouldbe obvious....if there are cars in the drive prior to 11am then guests are still present and it's more appropriate to come back after the checkout time. Seems obvious but common sense is very common... I think Mark Twain gets the credit for that little wisdom. Unfortunate we couldn't give this a 5 Star ... but not much Aloha here.
We appreciated Becky sharing her home with us! It was truly a "home away from home". We were able to do so much at HVNP because we were only 4 miles away. We did all the Day Hikes that the NP recommends and some extras. We enjoyed the Kilauea Iki Trail the most, including the Lava Tube. The most challenging was the Hilina Pali Trail to Ka'aha. It was easy to see the glowing caldera in the Kilauea Crater at night with such a short trip back to "home".
The kitchen is large and easy to use, so much storage area. We enjoyed the grill and having a washer & dryer convenient to use. The rooms are all separate enough to accommodate other couples or two or more families (four separate bedrooms). Everything worked out very well! We'd stay here again and recommend it to others!
Ohana House is a great base camp for trips to Volcano National Park. We stayed just three nights and got to spend two full days exploring the Park. The house is at a great location - quiet but only 2-3 minutes from the main road. Nice rooms and comfy beds.
I was a little worried at first being inland, we've always rented on the beach. Boy was I surprised! This house is amazing! Every detail was thought of, from shampoo to spices. The house is in the middle of the rain forest. Now I'm no "newbie" to Hawaii, I have been to the rain forest before but never actually stayed there before. It was a little dis concerning the first night. It was black as tar, you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. The house is cozy and very comfortable so we stayed in. The morning broke and what a sight to see!! Ferns 20 feet tall! We were mesmerized. Then we stated to relax and enjoy our new forest home. I have never felt so relaxed. My body & head let go of everything. I was in bliss for the first time since I could remember. This place has something about it that captivates your heart. I could have stayed forever.
Comfy home with 4 bedrooms and 2 baths. Well appointed kitchen with grill on porch. Also on porch is laundry room. House was neat and clean and nicely decorated. Wifi was easy to access but cell phones did not work well. The house did provide a land line phone. There is a beautiful window wall by the dining table in the great room that looks out onto the backyard where there is a little hiking trail. When we arrive the house was cold and it was nice to be able to turn on the gas woodstove to warm the house. It worked nicely. The house is about 1 mile from Volcano's National Park where there are some great hikes. Also, the glassblowing studio down the road, 2400 Fahrenheit was a must see. Had a great time and felt very relaxed. Only improvement I would make, the house smelled a little musty and rug in master bedroom was damp, not sure if there is a leak somewhere. It had been raining.
Just minutes from Volcano National Park, the Ohana House is perfectly situated in the highlands of the Big Island of Hawaii amidst thousands of acres of ancient rainforest. At 3,500 foot altitude, Volcano enjoys a temperate climate year-round and without the insects or heat of the coastal towns. The quaint village of Volcano has restaurants, galleries, a winery, golf course and shops for all your needs. A quick 30 minute drive takes you to Hilo, Hawaii's second largest city. Lava flows, waterfalls, black sand beaches, thermal-heated ponds and snorkeling are all less than an hour's drive away.
