Location and special feature:

In the 19th century, only those people in Italy who owned a house outside of town went on holiday – for example, the well-off citizens of Syracuse.

Even back then „Isola Siracusa“, the green peninsula south of Syracuse, was chosen as a holiday retreat.

Villa Antica, too, was built for this purpose on Isola Siracusa at the beginning of the 19th century.

When the heat in the city became unbearable, a lot of people escaped to their country houses, such as Villa Antica.

Due to the location on a hill, on the peninsula surrounded by the sea, there is always a caressing breeze and the fantastic view of sea and mountains adds to making you feel completely at ease.

Villa Antica stands out as a gem of times gone by and is the ideal holiday accommodation for all those who want to spend authentic holidays in the south-east, in the vicinity of sea, culture and nature.

The holiday home is located on 20,000 m² premises with Mediterranean planting and a pool shared by the guests of Villa Antica and of the accommodations Villa Gialla and Villa Bianca as well as of the guest rooms of B&B Il Casale, which are all found on the same property.

The holiday home:

When we were onsite, the owning family of Villa Antica told us that the house had been completely restored, but that the historic elements had been preserved.

Typically Sicilian, handmade rustic furniture, quarry stone walls, old paintings and the gorgeous wood beamed ceiling will make the hearts not only of those who love art beat faster.

Evidence of the past can be discovered in every corner of the villa.

Follow the traces of the Syracusan upper class and give in to the fascination of the charms of times gone by!

Upon entering the holiday home, you find yourself in the spacious living-dining room with TV; like all the rooms of the villa, it has got high ceilings of impressive wooden beams. The living and dining areas are separated by a stone arch.

The villa with its two comfortable and rustically Sicilian style double bedrooms accommodates four persons.

In the kitchen, the brick-work kitchenette includes a 4-burner gas stove, a refrigerator with freezer compartment and a small oven.

The bathroom is equipped with a bathtub with shower device, WC and bidet.

The sunroom is the highlight of the house. It serves as lounge as well as dining room and is accessible from the living room, from one of the bedrooms and also from the garden.

White curtains in the sunroom provide protection from sunlight; this light-flooded oasis of well-being is filled with a very special kind of atmosphere.

Savor a glass of southern Italian red wine and let the day fade away in a relaxed atmosphere while dusk sets in.

Outdoor area:

In the garden and on the terrace next to the house, you find garden furniture, a sun shade, a grill as well as sunbeds at your disposal.

Above Villa Antica, lies the spacious greened area with pool, loungers, changing cubicles and WCs.

The pool, 18 m long, is open from June to October and may even be on warm spring and autumn days (changes due to weather conditions possible).

During high season, you can buy snacks and drinks at the pool bar.

Villa Antica includes, amongst others, WIFI (for a fee), washing machine, grill and air conditioning with heating system.

Parking: Reserved parking is available on the fenced premises.

The sea and restaurants are 700 m, shopping facilities 1 km off.

The nearest sandy beach with parking and small bar is 1.6 km, a boat rental 1 km off.

We recommend the restaurants 'Ostrica Park' (700 m) and 'Il Circolo' (1 km), which are located directly on the waterfront and serve delicious dishes of fresh-caught fish.

It is only 7 km to Syracuse, a town rich in history.

Syracuse - The pearl of Sicily

Due to its unique location on the peninsula of Ortigia, its millennia old history and its blending of Orient and Occident, the town – a UNESCO World Heritage site – is one of Sicily's most interesting sights.

In ancient times, Syracuse had, for centuries, been the most significant town of the world then known. Even Cicero called it the 'the greatest and most beautiful of all Greek towns'.

Syracuse is located in the southeast of Sicily and made up of the Old Town (Ortigia) and the New Town.

Ortigia, the 'island of quails', is the original core of Syracuse. Baroque palazzi of white limestone, spacious squares and narrow alleys with bars, restaurants and cafes mark out the Old Town’s face.

The cathedral of Santa Maria delle Colonne, which dates from the 7th century BC, rises majestically in the centre of Ortigia.

The semicircular cathedral square is surrounded by grand 17th and 18th century palazzi.

Another 'celebrity' at Syracuse and steeped in legend is Fonte Aretusa, the fresh water spring at the seaside on the peninsula of Ortigia. For the Greeks at the time it was a source of drinking water.

According to legend, goddess Artemis transformed nymph Arethusa into a spring to protect her from lecherous god Alpheios.

The papyrus plants growing from the fountain were the raw material for paper manufacture

Our restaurant tip for Syracuse:

'Le Vin de l'Assassin' – a restaurant which combines Mediterranean specialities and French cuisine and serves its guests true culinary delights. Taste the excellent onion soup, the delicious starter puff pastry with aubergines and swordfish or the freshly prepared gilt-head bream, for example.

Address: Via Roma 115, Ortigia Siracusa (Opening hours: daily except Mondays)

Ognina- Idyllic place at the seaside

Ognina is only about 10 km from Syracuse and known for its idyllic location and the variety of its underwater world.

Snorkelers and divers get their money’s worth in the crystal clear water and can get their fill of colorful fish and coral formations.

Access into the sea at the mostly rocky coast is made easier at Ognina by a small section of beach with golden sand.

At a leisurely pace, fishermen start on their daily tours from Ognina’s landing.

There, you find a bar which is open during the summer months.

Fontane Bianche – Popular seaside resort with a touch of the Caribbean

The beautiful seaside resort of Fontane Bianche is located about ten kilometers south of Syracuse.

Combine a holiday at the beach with a visit to cultural highlights in the southeast of Sicily. It is about 12 km to the Baroque town of Noto, for example, one of the most beautiful towns of Sicily and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The coast at Fontane Bianche is made up of rocky sections with crystal clear water and light golden sandy beaches.

At Fontane Bianche, you find restaurants, grocery stores and bars.
