We fell in love with Lake Garfield and the Berkshires. It's so easy to get to Moore Cottage from both New York and Boston. And Berkshire County is an amazingly rich area, historically, culturally and recreationally.
Moore Cottage is close to many cultural activities, including Jacob's Pillow, the Norman Rockwell Museum and Tanglewood. It's fifteen minutes from Great Barrington and Lee; 20-25 minutes from Stockbridge and Lenox, all of which offer fine (and ethnic) dining, interesting shops and boutiques and great opportunities for hiking (including access to the Appalachian Trail in Monterey and Tyringham), walking, boating and fishing.
My spouse and I had high expectations for this cottage and Moore cottage exceeded them. The cottage's design really compliments the beauty of the area and lake. There are many vantage points in which to view the lake: inside the cottage from all three floors and especially from the two separate outdoor decks and a private dock-all at different levels or heights. The three floors of the cottage all have a spacious view of the lake. We were there for one week at the busy time of summer yet this spot felt very private. The swimming and boating (canoe and kayak) were very pleasant, no weeds. We enjoyed this magical spot so much we rarely left the cottage for the many surrounding events, restaurants, shopping, etc. We also took walks around the area which was pleasant with dirt roads in a wooded area. Sandra was incredibly helpful, warm and displayed a generous attitude throughout our interactions (e.g., with restaurant tips and went above and beyond even helping us retrieve an forgotten item). Also at the cottage there was a helpful guidebook the owners put together and the cottage was well stocked with all household basics and more. We would definitely return to Moore Cottage and letting our friends about this gem. We absolutely adored the whole experience of Moore Cottage.
We stayed in this special house for a long weekend in June while we attended a wedding in Monterey. The place is very beautiful, with large windows overlooking the lake. The kitchen is really charming, and well equipped. There is a dock that leads right out from the house to the lake. We felt like we were in a magical hideaway. The main bedroom is big and bright; the two little bedrooms are meant for kids, but we had an adult sleep in each bed, and it was comfortable. There is no internet, but our at&t phones worked just fine, and we went to the nearby general store when we needed to use our computers. We were nice and warm at night. The shower worked well. We recommend this place fully!
Our stay was awesome! We were in such a peaceful state of mind after arriving that we didn't even care about doing all the things we had planned before the trip. Just being in the house, on the dock (our granddaughter's favorite spot) or walking the dirt road leading to the cottage was all we needed to do. We did go to a wonderful production of The Other Place in Pittsfield
that we enjoyed very much and General Store was a great place for brunch, then again for late afternoon cookies and ice cream which we would take back to the house to enjoy with a fire and a movie. We all agreed that we really need at least one more week in our perfect retreat. Thank you for allowing us to share in the beauty and magic of your Moore Cottage, it is an experience we will always hold dear in our hearts. Kindest regards, Bill, Sandi and Camille
PS-Can not wait to stay there again.
My partner and I spent a week at this enchantingly unique cottage, and are planning to return next summer. It makes ingenious use of its steep and dramatic site, offering stunning views of the lake from every level while maintaining a comfy and welcoming aura. Photos don't really do it justice. The wooded surroundings offer seclusion, and the lake itself is clean, clear, and beautiful. It was sheer bliss to sit by the fireplace in the evenings. The kitchen is well-equipped, and the top terrace is a perfect place to enjoy lunch or dinner from the charcoal grill.
Just two caveats: this is a very vertical property, so if stairs are a problem, you might look elsewhere. And the two side bedrooms, with loft beds, are most suitable for children or adults under 5'7", though the futon couch in the living room is very comfortable. In any case, this place is a true gem.
We have come to view this cottage as our home away from home, without any of the responsibility of a homewner! It's a lovely, quiet, well-built and comfortable vacation cottage for our family of 4. Very convenient location, lots of places to walk, good swimming and boating, nice community in Monterey. Incredible views from inside the house and on the deck/dock. Highly recommended.
Moore Cottage was everything described and so much more magical. It was the PERFECT July lake front getaway. I'm in love with this property and location. I hope to go back this fall if my schedule allows. The owners were kind and responsive from the initial reservation through our entire stay (via the incredible house book they created). I happily recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing, peaceful, beautiful getaway.
A couple of helpful hints: the cottage sleeps four comfortably. Two in the master bedroom (btw the view of the lake from this room is stunning), one person each in the bunk rooms. There is not room in the bunk rooms for an air mattress on the floor. You CAN sleep six with two people on the futon in the living room which is what we did, but if it's rainy there is not enough common space for everyone to "lounge". The kitchen dining and outdoor dining is also better suited for 4 than 6. We found everything we needed for preparing meals - dishes, plates, glasses, cookware, utensils - and ate every meal at the house (mostly outside). The oven is European sized and the temperature temperamental - recommend cold desserts or hit the bakery. The fridge is apartment size, we filled it up quickly and had to store some things in a cooler with ice packs. I'm midwestern originally and live in Brooklyn, I tend to go overboard at big grocery stores. . . The Big Y in Great Barrington is great and offers good deals if you use their loyalty program - the silver coins especially.
The bathroom is small, better for 4 people than 6. My only complaint is that the shower and bathtub could use some updating/attention.
The lake is the cleanest most beautiful lake I have ever seen outside of Minnesota. The water is crystal clear. Bring floaties as it is about 6' deep a the end of the dock. There are floaties at the house, but we bought more. The hammock tucked away just above the lake was ideal for afternoon reading and naps.
Moore Cottage is a very special location, with great character, and beautifully maintained with a lot of love.
The Berkshires have been a popular vacation destination since the Gilded Age, when 19th century 'cottages' (i.e., mansions) were built as second homes by wealthy East Coast families. It's an area rich in history, culture and recreational opportunities for the whole family.
