Venturing out of town, you can take a short drive to the bay front town of Rock Hall where you will find marinas and waterman’s workboats; or Galena, a town known for its antique shops; or perhaps to Chestertown, on the banks of the Chester River where a blend of history, arts, shopping, and/or a Saturday morning trip to the Farmers Market along Fountain Park. The county seat of Kent County, on Maryland’s Upper Eastern Shore, Betterton is surrounded by the rich tapestry of farmland, Sassafrass River and Chesapeake Bay.
Our family is from the Philadelphia area, just 2 hour drive to Betterton, Maryland. Our careers are medical/hospital related and insurance managers. We grew up in the northeast section of Philadelphia, a suburb approximately 20 miles north of downtown Philadelphia. One us was born in Italy and immigrated to the USA as a very small child. We still have family in southern Italy and visit there as often as possible.
Lucia or Ben purchased this house in 1997
Our family has owned this home since 1997; we are from the Philadelphia area and when we made a decision to purchase a "beach house" we wanted a place to reflect a beach community of a bygone era. We stumbled into Betterton on a snowy, cold winter day. As soon as we came up Main Street and saw the Bay below and the beach signs, we knew this would be the place for our "beach house." The first summer in Betterton we were so pleasantly surprised at the peacefulness of the community; the friendliness of the neighbors -- they waving as they pass by. This would prove to us that we would always have a place to relax and enjoy the company of family, friends, and neighbors in a way that we could have only dreamed. The very first upgrade would be to expand the deck because we knew this would be where we could view the bay and watch the boats; we could congregate for morning coffee, eat our meals outdoors and generally enjoy outdoor living. As time went by, we converted the heating system to a modern day convenience -- central air conditioning. This proved to be challenging in a house built in 1929, but it was accomplished! The kitchen is generally vintage (as we like to say) and I can just imagine my grandmother cooking up a big family meal in there! Hope you will enjoy this home as your own!
Our beach house is vary spacious and no photo can capture the large open spaces and common areas where a large amount of people can gather together for a meal, play games, or simply talk!
The owners were AWESOME, we rented the house so we could work at a nearby job site. The house and location are great and so relaxing. The owners really helped to make sure we enjoyed our stay and felt at home. We'll definitely be returning.
It was a good stay for our group. Plenty of rooms, spaces, and a near by beach. But the house was not clean enough and many things to fix. But again, it was appropriate for our group's gathering not far ways from MD and PA area. I appreciate the owner(s) for making this place available.
Booking this property was somewhat of a shot-in-the-dark as my family and I had almost no familiarity with the Eastern Shore of MD. Nevertheless, the owners were incredibly responsive and helpful from the time we were considering booking the house all the way up through our stay. The house has an awesome location with bay views from the porch and a few minute walk to a lookout point and the beach. The house itself was very charming and clean as well. Even though we were at max capacity, it never felt crowded because the rooms downstairs are large and spacious. Having AC over the period we were there was also a huge plus as it was very hot!! If you are looking for a charming beach house that can fit a small crowd, this is the place! It's even stocked with beach gear and a grill. The neighborhood surrounding the house is quite scenic as well and perfect for taking an afternoon or morning stroll/jog. If we decide to vacation on the Eastern Shore, we will definitely try to rent this house again. Thanks Lucia and Ben!
My family and I had an amazing time at Betterton Beach! The house was a short walk from the water and comfortable for the 8 adults we had with us. If you're looking for a quiet weekend relaxing on the water this is a great rental property!
We just returned from a wonderful three day family get-away with daughter, son-in-law and grandkids. We loved Betterton and the lovely beach which was just a short walk from the house. We found the house to be a charming home, reminiscing of a by gone era. Everything was clean with lots of room for the family. The weather was absolutely perfect so we had no need of air conditioning - just open the windows and enjoy the breeze from the Bay. We brought things for the grand daughters to occupy their time, but it wasn't necessary as there was more than enough things to keep them busy - beach toys too! If you cannot live without television, there is Dish TV. In short, we really recommend this lovely home and Betterton. If you like to get away from it all, this is a place to step back in time (and it is only twelve miles from Chestertown).
The homeowner was very responsive to my many questions. She was very nice and we paid via PayPal, booking the home was easy.
There aren't many places that allows pets, so the fact that we could bring our family dog was great. The home is RIGHT next to the beach, my family and I walked to the beach. The beach is pretty small, but it felt like a private beach to us, there wasn't anyone there the weekend we stayed.
The home is BIG.
No central air, but they have a bunch on window air units in the home, that makes staying during the humid summer totally comfortable.
Just a 2 minute walk to the beach; located at the head of the Chesapeake Bay overlooking the confluence of the Sassafras, Elk, and Susquehanna Rivers, Betterton is a lovely town with the only beach in Kent County, Maryland. Come to Betterton for sailing, swimming, and dine at the restaurant overlooking the Bay.
