Perfect spot to post up on the North Shore
We have been lucky enough to stay at a handful of homes on the North Shore, but this one has blown them all away in terms of location, history, sense of place and beach-house comfort. We are a mulitgenerational family (ages 4-70) and every one enjoyed the home , lanai, yard and beach access. The house is comfortable, clean, and well cared for— no bells and whistles, but a thoughtfully maintained historic home that we found hard to leave (even if just for a day’s excursion).
Easy drive to Haleiwa, Waimea Valley Park, Foodland, Sharks Cove and the beach breaks along the bike path, but really we were content enjoying the beach at Leftovers. Perfect for swimming for our little one, snorkeling, and surfing. The patio under the Hau tree hosted many family dinners and sunsets under the twinkly lights. We spent every morning drinking coffee and watching whales from the lanai. The views throughout the house are stunning and the beach is private and calm. We will be back!
Hau Tree house is FANTASTIC - March 2018
Would have given this a 5 star rating if it wasn't for 2 small things that would have made this PERFECT but were a tad disappointing.
1- the fans provided for some reason would just stop working and start working again on their own. We turned one on and it didn't come on, later a couple of hours later, it started running again on it's own. (It was left on) The other just stopped and started the entire time we where there. Luckily it wasn't too hot in March.
2- The door facing the ocean did not have a screen door. So when it got dark we would have to keep the lights off or close the door to keep the bugs out. When you close that door, the air flow throughout the house just stops. The only suggestion I would truly have to make this place even better than it already is, is to install a screen door or even put up one of those mesh bug net things. I know the door opens out so it may not fit a screen door too well. I know those are 2 small things. And I know they are "First World Problems".
This place is beautiful and well maintained. The amenities are good and I can not believe the dishwasher is so dang quiet. There is nothing that you can't do at this place. We've stayed in other houses just up the street and I have to say this one is by far the most reasonably priced place in the area. The view is outstanding, and I absolutely loved the porches. One to sit and view the water and one to eat, play games and such under the Hau Tree. The Wakiki resorts can NOT touch this place. The water has more fish in it than "Turtle Bay" Just up the road. I actually hate writing this review because I would love to keep this place to myself to rent.
Trish was a delight to work with and even prior to renting she bent over backwards to make a couple of things to happen for me. She is a wonderful person to work with.
December North Shore
We have enjoyed are third visit to Hau tree House, second this year! The expanded panoramic view, exciting winter high surf, warm days and cools nights. The yard and house, as always, very clean and comfortable. A special retreat for us, we hope to return.

Quaint Home Right on the Ocean with Sandy Beaches - Perfect for Family of 4
This is our second stay at the Hau Tree House for our family of 4 (two adults, two teens) - the first time was 6 years ago. We planned our 2017 trip around the availability of this house because we loved it so much the first time. The owners have made upgrades to the home since our first visit - shower has been updated, washer/dryer looks new (and works great!), porch has been painted and looks so nice. The owners were wonderful and very responsive to our inquiries. This home is right on the ocean - with sandy beach on either side of the property as far as you can see. You can hear the waves at night and the long front porch is ideal for watching the waves and looking for turtles. It is located on a lovely private street, so it was very secluded which we liked. It is well equipped with snorkel gear, boogie boards, beach towels, and even a beach umbrella. We didn't use the separate apartment on the property, so I can't provide any details on that. The nightly rate for this is very reasonable. The home is very close to Haleiwa and Waimea Bay/Waimea Falls. (We saw turtles at Waimea Bay and loved hiking Waimea Falls and swimming in the pool at the base of the falls.) I struggle with how to rate this home for this visit because I know the issues we had are not the norm for this home or they're issues the owner has no control over. First of all, this home does not have air conditioning, which I'm guessing it doesn't typically need, but it was very hot and humid during our stay, thanks to Hurricane Fernanda. We just couldn't get the house to cool down at night despite all the fans the owner kindly provided. Adding a small window air conditioner and a screen door to the porch door would be a huge help. Secondly, this home is near Laniakea Beach (Turtle Beach) and the traffic on Kamehameha Highway (Route 83) heading both ways - towards Waimea Bay and towards Haleiwa - is really bad. Drivers look for turtles as they pass the beach and beach-goers cross the highway to get to the beach, which causes traffic to literally crawl. The weekends are especially difficult - took 45 minutes to drive the 3 miles from Haleiwa to the house - and it was like this from noon to 6pm. On weekdays, the traffic didn't back up quite so far, but still definitely an issue. Unfortunately, no matter the day, we had to plan our adventures around the traffic. This is an issue ALL the homes north of Haleiwa will have. Otherwise we really loved the home.
Beautiful location, perfect sunsets
First, I'd like to say the location, veiws and peacefulness of this rental can't be beat! That being said the total experience of our first family trip to Hawaii was very disappointing. On arriving found an American cockroach in the kitchen. We Called trish and was told we couldn't get an exterminater for another 8 days. So the cleaning Lady brought up 2 sticky traps. After 5 more nights of killing cockroaches 1 or 2 a night we called again was told it would be sprayed the next day we saw two more after that. For some people maybe no big deal. For us a HUGE deal! Two days after having a cable repairman in the house to fix WiFi the house was broken into during the day via the window of the bedroom the repairman was in. I did leave the widows open and was fully aware that it was stated to lock up the house but when we arrived the bathroom and laundry room windows were open so I felt safe and with no a/c and only box fans I was trying to keep the house somewhat cool. Both bedrooms are street side so at night with no a/c and the windows open you dont hear the beautiful ocean you hear cars all night. We do believe that the repairman was involved because the height of the window would prevent you from seeing anything inside unless you had been in the room and this was a crime of opportunity and in no way reflects on the neighborhood. The biggest loss was my daughters school laptop and sentimental jewelry and the overall feeling of uneasiness. I am dissapointed that after all that I never received a in person visit or even the feeling of concern for us as renters. All in all we tried to make the best of it. Three Things that would have made it better for us and future renters 1: Better pest control or seal up house better
2: Some kind of A/C unit so the house would be cool after being locked up all day
3: Somebody on site to handle problems in person. Cable, pest, window screens. We did make a lot of great memories but overall still not the vacation we hoped for
We always feel angst if a guest is having trouble during their stay. Fortunately it is rare. We responded to each complaint. We contacted our regular pest control company. When there was a delay we hired a different company who could respond quicker. The WiFi went out due to a storm and power surge. This was repaired quickly. Unfortunately home windows left open while away for the day for the first break in in decades. Cut toe on a glass block which was disposed of. Speaking to him nearly daily and praying for their safety. Blessings.
