About Richard Deslongchamps

Pat has a very satisfying continuing career in Physical Therapy while Dave is retired from careers teaching industrial automation, flying C-130’s for the Air National Guard and most recently local real estate sales. We met here in Greenville, married and built Moosetracks Family Cottages from a patch of overgrown woods and bogs a half mile beyond the end of a dirt road.

Pat is from the Concord NH area, Dave is from Southern RI and Cera is a special gift from our local Vet. Through our years in the local area, first as visitors, then vacation cottage owners, and now as residents we have learned what vacation cottage guests desire in the Moosehead Lake Region.

Here at Moosetracks we try to do only one thing and do that well: We provide our guests with comfortable, clean, reasonably priced vacation cottages in a serene pond-side setting. Our guests enjoy spacious fully equipped rustically modern cottages surrounded by acres of private woodlands, wildlife habitat and mountain scenery. All this and only a few minutes from Greenville and all the recreational activities the area has to offer.

Why Richard Deslongchamps chose Moosehead Lake

Pat grew up in a small town in rural New Hampshire, same for Dave, only it was in southern Rhode Island. Small towns are unique in that everyone knows everyone and everyone looks out for everyone else. There was a natural gravitation towards Greenville for that reason. Here we know our neighbors, people wave at each other when passing on the road.

Dave had been looking for the right place to build something special. He would put his small aluminum skiff in the truck and go off to explore. He found Prong Pond and fell in love with it. Pat lived in Beaver Cove and explored Prong Pond by canoe quite often. She thought it would be a great place to have a cabin.

Only later did they meet. Dave had seen a lot of property of the camp/cottage variety here, most of it unsuitable for his needs. His real estate broker had these 40 acres on Prong that would come up for sale soon. After much thought he made his offer and long story short he owned it.

While doing site work he met Pat thru his broker and invited her to see his new digs. You guessed it, she married Prong Pond and Dave came with the deal. The broker was their best man at the wedding. And as they say, the rest is history.

What makes this cabin unique

It was luxury starting with a blank sheet of paper. Here we could raise the bar. We could design cottages to take advantage of the unique setting and terrain. We had 40 acres and a half mile of shoreline to play with.

Started in the winter of 2000/01, Birch Overlook Cabin was designed to be a vacation rental retreat from the start. We modified a log home plan to give us an open sunny space with a nook and crannies look overhead. Of course a modern vacation cottage had to have central heating, full bath and fully equipped kitchen. Furnishing a “North Woods” cabin required a combination of campy and rustic cedar furniture. There’s even a collection of antique coffee pots displayed above the kitchen cabinets.

The grounds combine existing native trees with open space and perennial gardens tended to by Pat. A trail winds down thru the woods to a private dock just for this cottage. Across the parking area sits a huge rock left by the last glacier.

The real uniqueness of this property is that over 90% of our ponds shoreline can never be developed thanks to conservation minded land owners. These same landowners allow us to maintain marked trails thru the woods for hiking, snowshoeing and wildlife viewing. Although we are only 6 miles from town the feeling of the pond and woods along with the wildlife makes one think you are much more remote.

A Great Place!

  • 5 of 5

We needed a rental place near Moosehead Lake for only two nights that would accommodate two couples and a two-year-old. After searching the rental sites and reading all reviews, we chose Birch Overlook cabin on Prong Pond. What a great choice! Pat was very helpful both on the phone and via emails when I had questions or asked for recommendations. Their website also gave very useful information and accurate directions for getting there. We found Birch Overlook to be spacious, well-maintained and clean, and fully equipped with supplies for all of our needs. We loved the privacy of the setting, the scenic path to the lake, and the use of our very own kayak and canoe. Our main goal of the trip was to spot moose, which we did! On our last evening there, we took the drive up Lily Bay Road and saw two moose. Our car was the first to pull off the road to watch the moose both times, but before long, other cars had pulled in behind us to watch, too. Our trips into Greenville were fun, too. We especially enjoyed our meal at Flatlanders. I would definitely recommend Moosetracks Cottages to anyone traveling in this area.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great review. It's not always easy to get the local moose and our guests in the same place at the same time, although we did have one stroll down our driveway this morning, a moose that is. Thanks again, Pat and Dave.

I did a lot of research and found this cabin in the area we wanted to explore. The cabin far exceeded our expectations. It was cozy, clean, roomy, comfortable and in a perfect location. Pat and Dave are awesome people and we got to meet Cera; a very special dog. We hiked, canoed, kayaked, fished and relaxed. We took some scenic drives and enjoyed the colors of fall. We saw one bull moose, 3 loons and heard the howls of coyotes. It was very peaceful and picturesque sitting on the dock at sunrise and listening to an owl across the way. In town we enjoyed food at Flatlander's and Kelly's Landing. You can do as much as you want or as little as you want in a perfect cabin in a perfect place. We spent a week in the cabin and a week in Acadia. We have already decided next year to spend both weeks in the cabin. In the near future we hope to bring the kids and grandkids to fill up both cabins or the Sunrise cottage.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review. What you found with us is exactly our goal. Even the local wildlife were accommodating. Since you were here the local moose have been showing themselves almost daily. And we have a pair of spruce grouse on the driveway showing off for everyone. The loons are about to move to the coast for the winter. We will see them back in the spring. Again, thanks for your comments. Pat and Dave.

this was the greatest place we ever stayed. for our first time renting a cabin ( usually we stay at a hotel). it looked just like the pictures. we were very surprised on how well maintained it is and very clean. my husband and i are already planning for next year. this was his dream vacation spot, he found it. we will go back again and again as long as we can. we fished, hiked a little, went moose watching (saw 4)and shopped. pat and dave are the nicest people. we did not want to leave. we are counting down for next august. thank you pat and dave for making our vacation the best ever!

Owner's Response: When Pat and I vacation we avoid hotels as well. Last fall we rented a cottage in North Carolina advertised on Homeaway and enjoyed an experience very similiar to yours. Thanks for your comments, Dave.

Vacation to get away from the rest of the world.

A busy week walking, boating, swimming, relaxing, and fishing. Picked lots of raspberries, listened to loons in the morning and evening, made raspberry pancakes. We recommend The Dairy Bar, Hard Drive Cafe, B-52 crash site, canoeing in the evening, moosewatching towards "Lazy Tom Bog" in Kokadjo. Moose and antler count: Sunday-2 moose, Monday-1 doe, 2 chipmunks, Tuesday-humming bird, 4 loons, Wednesday-1 pine warbler, 1 moose, 2 bunnies, osprey or eagle, Thursday-red breasted nuthatch, unidentified birds, Friday-2 loons, 1 Sierra (Pat & Dave's lab). Thank you for the use of your gorgeous bit of the earth! We hope to come back sometime - maybe in the winter. Take care.

As you leave the endless traffic lights, strip malls and Wal-Marts behind, you will travel thru lightly populated rural Maine to Greenville. Once here you are now in a small outpost town at the edge of the 'Great North Woods'. It is different here; small shops, plaid flannel shirt diners and a couple of wilderness outfitters. Around you are Maine's largest lakes and numerous smaller ponds along with the headwaters of several notable rivers including the Allagash. Mt. Katahdin, just to our north, anchors the northern end of the Appalachian Mtn. chain. Surrounding you are several million acres of working forests, home to the 'American Loggers'. The only traffic jams here are for moose sightings. And this is a recreational wonderland; canoeing/kayaking, white water rafting, hiking, climbing, ATV and snowmobile trails, not to mention fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing. We will refer you to our website for detailed turn by turn directions to Birch Overlook Cabin when needed.
