About Roger Jenkins

Retired Professor and Dean

Roger Jenkins purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Roger Jenkins chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

Having grown up as a child nearby, when this property came up for sale, I quickly bought it. Because of my work, I have been privileged to travel all over the world, but have found no spot as beautiful as these mountains and streams here in Buladean.

What makes this cottage unique

- Minutes from Appalachian Trail

- Walk across street to have access to trophy trout stream with beautiful brook, rainbow, and brown trout.

- 10 minutes from rafting and water tubing.

- 30 minutes to Roan Mountain State Park with swimming, tennis, fishing, hiking, picnic'ing'.

- 30 minutes from the top of Roan Mountain - with the world's largest natural display of rhododendron.

-30 minutes from Penland School

- one hour from skiing at Beech and Sugar Mountains in Boone and Blowing Rock.

- one hour from Biltmore House in Asheville

- peaceful, quiet, and wrapped in natural beauty.

A Treasure

  • 5 of 5

Such a beautiful treasure of a property located in Buladean, NC. With a rating of 1-10 this would definitely be a 20. Beautifully furnished, clean and extremely well equipped. The location is perfect for either Bakersville or the Roan Mountain. Truly enjoyed our stay as I am sure you will also. The Jenkins are so nice, friendly and so easy to work with. We were greeted with homemade loaf cake, egg salad and homemade jam.( might add Mrs, Jenkins makes some of the best jelly and jams in the area) Already looing forward to next year as we try to return every summer for our family reunion. Can't go wrong with this charming home.

Owner's Response: This wonderful family has stayed with me before - at the Red Roof Farmhouse Estate and at the Cottage at Toobie Hole Falls. I was really fortunate to be able to "save them," this year as there were only two in the family traveling to the mountains and they opted for a smaller one-bedroom home in the area. When they arrived, they were shocked and simply couldn't stay there so they called me, i was at home, and met them in 15 minutes with a key to the Cottage! And they were so flustered, took them some homemade bread, jam, and egg salad! I don't think they'll try anywhere else again! And I'm so grateful for this beautiful family.

Nature Abounds!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent 3 nights at this lovely cottage and enjoyed every minute of it. We love exploring all that this area of NC has to offer. We went into Johnson City, TN (a very quick drive from the cottage) and had a blast exploring the downtown area. Many waterfalls are close by and very fun to scout out. Each morning we enjoyed the deck over the creek and watched the hummingbirds and field of butterflies behind the house! Our wonderful hosts, the Jenkins, told us to help ourselves to the blackberries growing on the property, and what a treat that was. They were so good and we had a great time picking them. They also brought us some delicious homemade brownies. The cottage is extremely comfortable and so nice to come home to after a day of exploring the area. The kitchen is equipped well for cooking meals and the beds are very comfortable. The cottage is a wonderful place to stay and we hope to get back very soon!

Owner's Response: This was such a wonderful family with impressive, bright articulate daughter starting her junior year in high school. The father is an avid fly fisherman which brought them to the Cottage because it is so close to so many great trout streams, including tenkara fishing in small streams for native "speckled" trouts (the huge hand painted "quilt" pattern I have on the white barn at the Cottage). Spring and early summer fishing is best! They left the Cottage as they found it and treated everything as if it were their own. So happy the blackberries and raspberries were ripe so they could taste. Just missed peaches and plums in same orchard that ripened earlier. One of the pleasures of renting is meeting folks like these who wind up being return guests and friends.

Hidden NC treasure!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 4 nights at this cottage over the 4th of July weekend. The purpose of our little getaway was to escape the Florida heat and to hike the beautiful NC mountains. This cottage was centrally located to several of our hiking spots such as Grandfather mountain, Mt. Mitchell, Linville Falls, and Roan Mt. It was also a relatively short distance to Boone and Blowing Rock which we always enjoy. As for the cottage itself, it was probably the best stocked place we have ever rented. It was very clean, provided lots of space and was situated in a very quiet area. It was very relaxing at night, listening to the little streams while being able to see countless stars along with many fire flies :) A word of advice: unless you are prepared for a 45 minute drive for dinner or lunch, bring as much food as possible for your stay. We knew this cottage was quite a distance from places to eat so we were prepared for it. If you are looking for a serene place that offers proximity to nature, this is your place. Dr. Jenkins was very accommodating and his guide to the area was very helpful. We highly recommend!

Owner's Response: So so happy this fun family got to experience all the fantastic hiking opportunities around. Looks like they found them all. I appreciate the care the family gave the home, they treated it as if it were their own and not everyone does that. We really do pride ourselves on the fact that when you walk into the house, it looks like someone lives there - it doesn't look like a rental home - it is so well stocked! While the guests made a trip to the orchard to get some plums, he experienced a yelllow jacket and so sorry about that. Yellow jackets love orchards!!!!!! Hope they will come again, and again!

Owner's Response: This family traveled to this area to spend Thanksgiving with family members. I have a lot of guests who do have family in the area and need a home-away-from-home stay. Great guests and took care of the home as if it were their own. Hope to see them again.

Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We wanted to get away for a long weekend, and this turned out to be the perfect spot. It's an easy drive to many tourist and sight seeing places. The scenery at the cottage is great. The deck out back is relaxing, and two young deer came to visit us every morning and evening. They liked the acorns under the tree. Roger was great to work with.

Owner's Response: Sadly, I didn't get to meet this young couple, although I did manage to have six huge freshly baked chocolate chip cookies waiting for them upon arrival. Happy to see they met and fell in love with Dancer and Prancer! The deer love the apples and pears from the small orchard on the property! Unfortunately, they also like to nibble on my rasberry and blackberry bushes!

Cottage at Toobie Hole Falls

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. Would have loved to try the fishing, but the weather wasn't very cooperative and we had such a short time to visit. The Appalachian Trail is very close by, just up past the Mountain Grill a couple miles at the Tennessee State line. The cottage is well equipped and very comfortable with any amenities you might need or want. We hope to return before too long!

Owner's Response: Yes, the guests are correct, there are two entry points to the Appalachian Trail within 10 minutes of the Cottage! And the THIRD entry point is 30 minutes away on the Roan Mountain which has so so so many other wonderful hiking opportunities as well. Great trout fishing close by as well.
