About Roger Jenkins

Retired Professor and Dean

Roger Jenkins purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Roger Jenkins chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

Having grown up as a child nearby, when this property came up for sale, I quickly bought it. Because of my work, I have been privileged to travel all over the world, but have found no spot as beautiful as these mountains and streams here in Buladean.

What makes this cottage unique

- Minutes from Appalachian Trail

- Walk across street to have access to trophy trout stream with beautiful brook, rainbow, and brown trout.

- 10 minutes from rafting and water tubing.

- 30 minutes to Roan Mountain State Park with swimming, tennis, fishing, hiking, picnic'ing'.

- 30 minutes from the top of Roan Mountain - with the world's largest natural display of rhododendron.

-30 minutes from Penland School

- one hour from skiing at Beech and Sugar Mountains in Boone and Blowing Rock.

- one hour from Biltmore House in Asheville

- peaceful, quiet, and wrapped in natural beauty.

I was impressed with all of the extra nice touches this beautiful home has. The home was very clean, bed was comfy and the kitchen is well stocked with nice dishes and cookware. It's in a great location for hiking and site seeing. The wifi service has good speed. Red Hill has a restaurant that serves lunch and dinner. It's a quaint small place but all the food we ate there was very tasty. Very good homemade desserts. Roger the owner was a delight to meet and brought us homemade brownies. I would highly recommend this home and definitely will return.

pleasant quiet getaway

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was nice. Beds were comfortable. Yard was nice and plenty of room to play with kids. Not much water running in the little creek on property this time of year. I'm sure it is really nice when more water is flowing. Spacious kitchen and laundry room. Wifi worked well. Pretty stream across the road just hard to get down to because of steep slope. Could not figure out how to eliminate musty smell in the cottage. Maybe some ceiling fans would help? Overall a nice place to stay. Very scenic area if you want a place that's away from bigger towns. Cottage is 10 miles north of little downtown Bakersville on Hwy 226. Its 30-45 minutes to Blue Ridge Parkway access in Little Switzerland. 30-45 minutes to Roan Mountain State Park and Carvers Gap (hiking along Appalachian Trail). 30 minutes to Walmart in Spruce Pine. Owner Roger and his brother were very nice. Roger dropped by with some homemade brownies the first night.

Owner's Response: So happy this family enjoyed their stay at the Cottage and visited so many beautiful places close by in the area. I'm stunned, though, at the comment that there was a musky smell in the kitchen. I have never, ever smelled something like that ...... or has ever any guest staying there experienced such. I'm going to call this family and talk more about this specifically. I'm thinking for sure they must have left wet boots or tennis shoes inside entry to kitchen. This is the first ever negative comment I've ever heard from a guest staying at the Cottage in five years.

Quiet Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The quiet solitude of this cottage was wonderful! It was spacious, clean, and well equipped to enjoy your own meals. The location allowed us to travel from the Mt. Mitchell area, Crossnore, Spruce Pine, Burnsville, or Linville in a good amount of time. Saylor Apple Orchard is just off Rt.226 headed to Bakersville, and has tasty fall apples. The TN border wasn't far, so we will explore there the next time we come to the cottage. Mr. Jenkins met us as we were leaving, and earlier left a plate of brownies. His hospitality was great and I know that we will be back again to stay at the cottage.

Peaceful Serenity

  • 5 of 5

Such a peaceful "home" for relaxing. It was very comfortable and clean. Everything you needed was provided with an extra special touch. Cookies were waiting upon our arrival. The next day Roger brought brownies --YUM! Having coffee on the deck over the babbling creek in the cool morning was refreshing. The deck also is a wonderful place to sit and soak in some rays while reading one of your favorite books or sipping on a glass of wine.. Fruit trees abound as well as berries. We were able to pick apples, pears and fresh raspberries -- Delish! The kitchen was well equipped for cooking. The bed slept dreamily. The thick plush towels were a bonus too Roger makes sure this is not just your "run of the mill" rental. He makes it special. Thank you for sharing your lovely cottage and hospitality. We look forward to visiting again soon.

Owner's Response: Few guests notice the details of what makes for a pleasant rental as did this wonderful couple. They cared for the home as if it were their own. They enjoyed every positive feature of the property. Look forward to having these new friends return again, and again. Most my guests are repeat visitors.

A Treasure

  • 5 of 5

Such a beautiful treasure of a property located in Buladean, NC. With a rating of 1-10 this would definitely be a 20. Beautifully furnished, clean and extremely well equipped. The location is perfect for either Bakersville or the Roan Mountain. Truly enjoyed our stay as I am sure you will also. The Jenkins are so nice, friendly and so easy to work with. We were greeted with homemade loaf cake, egg salad and homemade jam.( might add Mrs, Jenkins makes some of the best jelly and jams in the area) Already looing forward to next year as we try to return every summer for our family reunion. Can't go wrong with this charming home.

Owner's Response: This wonderful family has stayed with me before - at the Red Roof Farmhouse Estate and at the Cottage at Toobie Hole Falls. I was really fortunate to be able to "save them," this year as there were only two in the family traveling to the mountains and they opted for a smaller one-bedroom home in the area. When they arrived, they were shocked and simply couldn't stay there so they called me, i was at home, and met them in 15 minutes with a key to the Cottage! And they were so flustered, took them some homemade bread, jam, and egg salad! I don't think they'll try anywhere else again! And I'm so grateful for this beautiful family.

Nature Abounds!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent 3 nights at this lovely cottage and enjoyed every minute of it. We love exploring all that this area of NC has to offer. We went into Johnson City, TN (a very quick drive from the cottage) and had a blast exploring the downtown area. Many waterfalls are close by and very fun to scout out. Each morning we enjoyed the deck over the creek and watched the hummingbirds and field of butterflies behind the house! Our wonderful hosts, the Jenkins, told us to help ourselves to the blackberries growing on the property, and what a treat that was. They were so good and we had a great time picking them. They also brought us some delicious homemade brownies. The cottage is extremely comfortable and so nice to come home to after a day of exploring the area. The kitchen is equipped well for cooking meals and the beds are very comfortable. The cottage is a wonderful place to stay and we hope to get back very soon!

Owner's Response: This was such a wonderful family with impressive, bright articulate daughter starting her junior year in high school. The father is an avid fly fisherman which brought them to the Cottage because it is so close to so many great trout streams, including tenkara fishing in small streams for native "speckled" trouts (the huge hand painted "quilt" pattern I have on the white barn at the Cottage). Spring and early summer fishing is best! They left the Cottage as they found it and treated everything as if it were their own. So happy the blackberries and raspberries were ripe so they could taste. Just missed peaches and plums in same orchard that ripened earlier. One of the pleasures of renting is meeting folks like these who wind up being return guests and friends.
