Sunfetcher - Secluded Very Cute Retro Cottage

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Slow down... this isn't the mainland. If you are looking to relax and truly get away from it all, our house is the place for you. This 3 bedroom cottage is located in Ocracoke Village on the Outer Banks of NC. It has all the amenities of home and is decorated in sea glass colors which reflect our love of the water. The location is very quiet and private. It is secluded among cedar trees yet within walking or biking (the preferred method of transportation) distance of restaurants, shopping, Silver Lake harbor and the Ocracoke Lighthouse. Spend your days with a good book on the deck or screened porch, out in the boat, or enjoying one of America's #1 rated beaches (Dr. Beach, 2007).

Enjoy your morning coffee out on the deck overlooking our private yard or in the kitchen as the sunrise greets you thru the French doors. The cottage sleeps 6 with one queen bed, one double bed, and two twin beds. It is furnished with everything you need to immediately feel right at home... extra pillows and blankets, a CD and DVD library and everything you need to cook all your meals there. There is a hot/cold outdoor shower and stereo with iPod docking station.

Ocracoke is rich with local history in waterfowling, commercial fishing and of course, the pirate Blackbeard. It was at Teach's Hole off the shore of Ocracoke Island where Blackbeard famously met his demise. If you enjoy seafood there are many restaurants serving local fare or you can drop by the local fish market for something fresh to cook back at the cottage (unless of course you catch your own). For you fishermen there is room for boat parking and we have a lighted fish cleaning station. Boat rentals and both fishing and sailboat charters are available out of Silver Lake.

Best Beach to visit on the East Coast

  • 4 of 5

This was my first visit to Ocracoke island. The area is a quaint and beautiful community. The undeveloped beach was perfect. We chose this house solely based on price. That said for the money and extreme privacy, we were very pleased. The owner made sure we understood about the water and yard going in. As we have dealt with sulfur in the water before, we knew what that entails. My recommendation is that if you are mainly concerned with price for the money it was worth what I considered minor inconveniences. Thanks. And when we have more vacation money and the water is fixed I intend to come back to this house as it was the most private in one of the best locations because it is the most convenient to all areas on the island.

Great time in Ocracoke

  • 4 of 5

My family had a great time at Ocracoke staying at the Sunfetcher. We enjoyed the central location of the house for riding bikes and taking a mid-day pit stop between being on the boat and the beach. The water does smell bad, but knowing that coming into it made it not a big deal- just bring plenty of water to drink. The neighbors are local and super nice people, they showed us around and told us some really cool places to check out. I would stay here again for sure.

Close to everything, clean and comfortable, beautiful island.

  • 5 of 5

Sunfetcher was perfect for this family of five. We love to go to the beach early and stay until dinner. We can home to a cool and clean cottage with plenty of beds. The location was a two minute walk to amazing seafood restaurants with bands and drinks. The cottage was clean and pleasantly decorated. We loved riding bikes to the fresh seafood market and making dinners in the kitchen at Sunfetcher. Plenty of utensils and everything we needed for that. The owner bought our drinking water for us and we found the recycling center on the way off the island. The house, although centrally located had a ton of privacy due to trees and positioning. If you want to visit the most beautiful beach in the country and catch some fantastic waves than this is the place for you! Thank you to the owners and the residents of Ocracoke. The National Seashore is a true treasure to behold.

Better than expected

  • 3 of 5

I've been coming to ocracoke my entire life and my family actually owns a house there, my brother and his girlfriend I and decided to come down for the weekend and our home was already rented so we sought out somewhere else affordable to stay. We read all the reviews about the house and were a bit nervous but figured it wouldnt be a huge deal since we would only be there for a few days. We were so pleasantly surprised by the house! Our expectations were low, but the house is so incredibly cute and full of light and in a wonderful, off the beaten path, location. The water was certainly an issue (and there wasnt any drinking water at the house when we arrived like the owner said there would be, however she set up an account at the store where we picked some up for ourselves) but we survived- we took shampoo to the beach and showered at the station there- other reviewers said they were able to take showers at the house but we couldnt muster the courage. We had a perfect weekend on the island and the house helped facilitate that despite the few issues. I would definitely rent it again for a weekend trip

Roof Over Your Head

  • 1 of 5

We have rented many places through VRBO around the world and have never been disappointed; the reviews accurately described the property and experience with the owner. Unfortunately Sunfetcher was our first unsatisfactory experience. This was the first place we rented where the owner was not local, and in this situation, it made a huge difference with the property maintenance. The biggest issue with this property is its lack of clean, sanitary running water. We expected the sulfur smell, but we were not aware the water runs from a light rust color to a deep rust color always. I contacted the owner over my surprise and concern with the discolored water, and her solution was for my husband to "regenerate" their filtration system. He regenerated the system multiple times per the owner's instructions, and it did not make any difference with the condition of the water. I took a picture I'm not able to post here of the water in a cup, and it looked like apple cider. With no option to bathe elsewhere, we reluctantly showered in the water. The poor water situation was extremely inconvenient--we had to manage with bottled water for everything other than showering and flushing the toilet. When first entering the house upon arrival, we found the main door's knob was broken. We luckily discovered the key worked with a door on the back of the house. I notified the owner about the broken door knob, and although she said she would look into getting someone out to fix it, as she did not know it was broken, no one ever showed up to repair it. We also discovered the back double door wouldn't lock because the door is off-kilter. I informed the owner that my husband had a bad fall on the slippery, molded wood deck just outside of the 2nd screened porch door while carrying the bottled water we picked up from the local store to which she simply apologized. This is a safety hazard. During our stay, the owner never followed up with me regarding these issues. When I contacted the owner on our departure, I shared additional issues we found during our stay; the grill igniter was broken, and another major safety issue was only 1 of the motion sensor lights under the property worked so the steps leading up to the house were not lit at night. The owner did not acknowledge my final message. As a side note, my licensed plumber husband suggested the owner replace their very old electric hot water heater as the anode rod is bad, exacerbating the poor well water conditions.

Labor Day Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were interested in this property because of it's location and because we were able to bring out dog, and it did not disappoint. The few friends we met on the island that came to see us at the house were in love with it's location and screened in porch (to keep us protected from the last of the summer bugs). When we showed up to the house, there were a few minor issues that the owners responded to right away (including no drinking water and an issue with the water purifier in the kitchen). They were very accommodating! The tap water is unpleasant, but we didn't rent a house at the beach to sit in it all weekend... we went for the beach, restaurants, and outdoors and luckily we had great weather - so it wasn't hard to tolerate a 5-minute shower once a day (we actually started to get used to it, believe it or not)! My husband already wants to plan a guy's weekend back at the property, and I'd happily rent from the owners again.
