Way to go Hughthir! We were wondering when you would decide that you should let the world know about this gem of yours. Folks, you can be assured that my wife Kathie and I are looking over our schedule for this summer ... and the fall ... to see when we can get the time away to enjoy this opportunity. I can tell you this from our many visits to the property over the past few years: This home and setting are magnificent, and extremely well priced for what you will be getting for your money. From the moment you pull off the road onto the two-track back into the woods you start to feel the serenity of nature at its best. Don't pass this one up folks. Take it from a city boy who is stuck in the hussle and bussle of the work-world WAY too much: This is it! And I can promise that once you do rent Hughthir's place you will ABSOLUTELY want to come back again and again. And that's just the way it really is!

Quiet Beautiful Sanctuary

  • 5 of 5

Although our visit was cut short due to circumstances beyond our control we found the place to be beautiful and private with an owner who was very friendly and eager to make sure we found the place and had a nice stay. The house had everything that we needed and it is in the perfect location to enjoy Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Beautiful and quiet cabin!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the house with our one year old son and we had an amazing time! The house has everything that you could need and our little boy loved the dog Felicia! We loved how close the house was to Glen Arbor and Empire (10 minture drive) as well as Traverse City (25 minute drive) yet far enough away to feel secluded. We also loved the scenic driveway leading to the house! The cabin could use some updated information regarding local attractions, nevertheless we were able to navigate the towns no problem and went on some great scenic hikes and bike rides! If we are ever in this area again we would love to stay at the cabin again. Hughthir is an excellent host and is there if you need him! We would 100% recommend and he already done so to several people we know!

Lovely retreat

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a quiet get- away in the woods in a lovely, spacious cottage with a beautiful view from each one of the "many" windows, close to all popular spots around Empire, you should make a reservation now! Meals may be shared out on the deck with table and chairs and grill, and even a view of the water from some spots! A piano was a plus, with many good albums to enjoy on the phonograph Hughthir White makes himself available to his guests, and is a gracious, and generous host.

Peaceful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is a special place. You can feel it as you drive back through the property to the cabin. The cabin itself is comfortable and well-stocked, and full of light and exposed wood and plants. We definitely ventured out into the surrounding area—got groceries and sandwiches in Glen Arbor, chocolate in Empire, and did some hiking in the Sleeping Bear Dunes. But most of our time was spent right on the property. We saw all kinds of amazing wildlife, including a bald eagle and an otter. A few notes to future travelers: the well water has a strong mineral scent. It's not offensive, but if you're used to city water, you might want to bring some big containers of water for drinking. Also, the coffee maker is non-electric. There's a Chemex, a small 1-person press pot, and a small stove-top percolator. We really enjoyed the old-school brew, but it took a while to make coffee for 2 people in the morning (just a heads' up).

Hughthir was a great host; unobtrusive but close by if we needed him. And we've been missing our hiking companion, Felicia the dog. It was really nice to meet them both. We would definitely love to come back for a longer stay.

Absolutely Incredible Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Hughthir's cabin is simply the best place my family has ever stayed. Our hope was to get away from it all and spend a few days off the grid and in nature. The cabin and surrounding land far exceeded our expectations. Set in 120 private acres of untouched forest, hills and lakes - we hiked through some of the most beautiful country right out of the front door. It felt as if we were in a animal sanctuary, as we saw many so many different animals and birds, almost in any direction we turned. The driveway trip alone is epic, 10 minutes of unbelievable scenery before arriving to the most perfect little cabin. The interior of the cabin is something really special. Decorated with wonderful artwork and family photos from Hughthir's late mother's life, we felt as if we were spending time with and inspirational and cultivated woman. Books upon books line the homemade shelves, along with an eclectic vinyl collection and turntable. A beautiful tub with mosaic tiling along the walls allows you a private view of the forest while luxuriating in the tub. We found the cabin to be spotlessly clean, fully stocked with clean sheets, towels, toiletries and kitchen items. And perfectly working Internet, btw. A beautiful, natural lake - free of any docks, boats or other man-made items can be scene from the lovely front porch. Hughthir's own cabin can be seen across the driveway, but it is remotely tucked into the forest. Close enough for any questions, far enough to feel secluded. Hughthir's dog Felicia accompanied us on most of our walks, providing a welcomed guide. And as a sweet natured, mature dog - tolerated many hugs and pets from our 6 year old with ease. As a host, Hughthir was all one could ask for - polite, kind, informative and otherwise invisible. the cabin is also conveniently only about 15 minutes from either Empire, MI. or Glen Arbor, MI. Both have groceries stores, shops and restaurants. National park trail heads also 15 minutes, and of course Lake Michigan coast is also 15 minutes away. I hesitate to elaborate because I somewhat hope to keep this gem a secret. But I feel compelled to honestly share our absolutely incredible getaway.
