Please note: The Google map only displays the approximate location. The hills of Chianti, lined with vineyards and crowned with cypress trees, have become a symbol of Tuscany where one finds the rare combination of natural beauty and lavish lifestyle. Chiantishire, as it is ironically called by the English, has a plethora of small, walled villages and in these medieval settlements one can grab their daily cappuccino at the cafes, try the local wine the cellars, or enjoy the traditional cuisine in the trattorias: cured meats and salami, fresh pasta, wild boar ragout with white beans, and salads of wild, field greens. Walking along the narrow streets between the old stone walls, one can easily come across a shepherd and his flock, who makes precious Pecorino cheese. Going out: bar (2 km); restaurant (2 km); grocer (2 km); Mercatale (2 km); San Casciano (2 km); Greve in Chianti (12 km); Florence (18 km). Sightseeing: here in the heart of Tuscany, there are a number of partial and full day outings available: Arezzo, famous for the frescoes of Piero della Francesca and its monthly antique market; the walled city of Lucca with its 99 churches; the Leaning Tower of Pisa; the Orcia Valley with the Renaissance city of Pienza and the wine centres of Montepulciano and Montalcino; and the impressive Abbey of Sant’Antimo are just some examples. Florence: In Florence, the capital of Tuscany, you can immerse yourself in art, architecture, and culture. Just some highlights are: Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia, the cathedral with the bell tower and baptistery, the cathedral museum, the Palazzo Vecchio, Bargelllo, San Marco and the frescoes of Fra Angelico, Santa Croce, San Miniati, as well as the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti, and the Boboli Gardens. Florence brings to mind leather goods, lacework, linens, Florentine paper, wine, and culinary delights. The most celebrated events here are Easter and the 25th of June, San Giovanni. Interested in getting a taste of Florence in advance? Take a look through our new cultural website and browse through the 70 different museums in Florence: Siena: Siena is possibly the most charming city in Tuscany. The streets are narrow and the red brick Palazzi are quite elegant. Siena is famous for its exciting Palio Festival. In the centre of the city, at the Piazza del Campo – the unique square that gets its name from its mussel-like shape and may be one of the most beautiful places in the world – the famous Palio takes place two times each year (the beginning of July and the middle of August): it is a horserace, during which each contrada (city ward) enters its own festively decorated and church blessed steed into the competition for a shot at the prize. This stunningly colourful festival has existed since the Middle Ages and over the course of each year, Siena eagerly anticipates the event. In the weeks before and after Palio, there are celebrations in the streets: outdoor meals are eaten at long tables – large banquets for hundreds of people, hosted by the various contradas, are held along the romantic lanes of the city.
