My husband Bill and I purchased this cottage in 1998 so that we could be close to but not on top of my family. My mother, brother, aunt and cousins all have cottages on this lake.
Lyle Foley purchased this cottage in 1998
Our family has lived on this lake since the 1920's, when my grandparents first bought a cottage here.
We enjoy the boating, swimming, sailing, sun and berry picking this lake affords. There are shopping and restaurants in nearby Keene and Brattleboro, live theatre in Peterborough and West Chesterfield and antiqueing throughout the area.
This was our second year staying at this cottage and loved it even more than the first. We feel the descriptions of the cabin are very truthful. We love to look around at all the antiques and old photos, every year I spot new items or items I did not see the 1st year. I lake is wonderful and the island is so close we swim to it atleast one time. The paddle boat and canoe gets alot of use and we bring our kayaks for even more fun. The bedrooms are great the high open ceilings makes for cool nights for enjoyable sleeping. We love this lake house so much we have already rented again for next year and will continue as the years go by. We have stayed at 3 other cottages on different areas of the lake and this is by far the best!!!! The road is close but with supervision it has never been a problem, as with the stairs, we have two children 3 &5 and have our family visit with other children.
We know Spofford Lake quite well. Started going there in the late 1960's...Read about this cottage online...knew the location, contacted the owner and rented the cottage for Columbus Day weekend 2011...Couldn't have asked for a better weekend!!! We were 7 people...ages 11 through 85.....We had such a nice weekend....Spofford lake is as crystal clear as it was in the 1960's....Great cottage!...Huge lakefront porch...4 bedrooms upstairs....sleeps 8 guests...nice kitchen, dishwasher, washer, dryer huge dining room table....(but would much rather sit and eat meals on the porch!)....TV...cable, DVD....What more could one want?....and a dock and a small beach to go swimming....(Yes...we were swimming on Columbus day weekend!!!)...Hope to be back at this cottage in the summer of 2012!!!! On a scale of one to 10....this house and location is a 10 couldn't have asked for any better !!!!
We loved our stay at the old cottage! The view from the big front porch was great! We enjoyed having our own private dock for our boat and our own swimming and sitting area on the private beach. The lake access at this point was terrific, with no barriers or obstacles out to the deep water.
The cottage was quaint; we enjoyed using the old dishes, looking at the historic lake photos on the walls and being surrounded by all of the antiques. When it rained, we did a lot of cooking. It was wonderful to have lots of pots and cooking utensils to use.
The bedrooms upstairs were open to the rafters, which made it cooler at night for sleeping.
While the road in front was moderately busy, it also made it easy to access the cottage and carry in our groceries and luggage. Traffic is light during most of the day, only increasing at commuter times.
On chilly nights, we lit a fire in the woodstove after enjoying the fire pit down on the beach.
My family and I have rented this cottage for the last 2 summers and have loved every minute of our stays there. We only wish we could stay longer!! The cottage, dock area, and the lake are beautiful and we would recommend it very highly. The listing is accurate regarding the location and the photos are spot on. The cabin was immaculate when we arrived. The owners took time to show us around the property and point out the idiosyncrasies of the house.
After arriving for our vacation week we soon realized that what was presented in the listing was not how things were. The outside steps up to the cottage are very steep and not easy for young children or older adults. So too are the steps up to the "attic bedrooms". They were even steeper and more narrow making it hard even for our dog to climb up there. The road in front of the cottage is VERY BUSY and a major cut through for trucks, 18 wheelers and others. The speed limit is not observed so having small children out front is dangerous and must be supervised at all times. The screened in porch is wonderful for sitting and looking out at the lake which has some beautiful sunrises.
