Duke's Lake Retreat, on the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix, is perfect for a family vacation or a group of friends getaway. The property is great for all seasons - the view of Lake Charlevoix transitions throughout the seasons, but remains the highlight of our home.
Winter: Easy access to tons of winter sports! 20 minutes to Boyne Mountain (downhill and cross country skiing, tubing, skating, Avalanche Bay waterpark, spa etc). Also, only 1/4 mile to state groomed snowmobile trails
Summer: 100 feet of lake shore on one of the largest and most pristine lakes in Northern Michigan. The South Arm (the smaller part of Lake Charlevoix) is perfect for water sports including sailing, jet skiing, tubing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing or cruising on a pontoon. Just a few nautical miles north, the South Arm opens up to the bigger part of Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan. Rent or bring a boat! This property features a dock that can accommodate up to a 26 foot boat. You can stay connected with the home's free wireless internet or 'unplug' yourself and put your feet up to relax with the calming sound of waves.
Fall: Color tours - including drives or bike rides through the Jordan Valley
Spring: As the snow melts and Northern Michigan starts to bloom, the spring brings a season of adventure. With fewer tourists, it is the perfect time for outdoor adventures (mushroom hunting!) or to explore the many places to eat, drink and be merry!

About Melissa Duke
John and I live in Williamston, MI, but completely love the Lake Charlevoix area! John, a graduate from Albion College, is in the mortgage business. I graduated from MSU (Go green!) and am currently a program manager for a communications company in East Lansing. We purchased Duke's Lake Retreat in 2004, and the first few summers we spent as much time as possible exploring the beauty of Lake Charlevoix as well as searching out the many places to eat, drink and be merry in Northern MI. We were engaged at Chateau Chantal on Old Mission Peninsula (about 45 minutes from Duke's Lake Retreat) and were married at Castle Farms (right in Charlevoix!) in January of 2010. So many of our special life moments have been in and around Northern MI! In 2009 we decided to start sharing our home with guests via homeaway and have had a wonderful experience! Although we would love to be able to spend more peak summer time at our home, we are so pleased to be able to share it with our guests. Whether it be painting a bathroom, installing an irrigation system or replacing the beach towels, we find upgrade projects every year to help improve our guests' vacation experience. We feel lucky to have met some fantastic people through this process and look forward to many more years of sharing Duke's Lake Retreat!

Why Melissa Duke chose East Jordan
When we first looked at the home, it was a bit difficult to see the potential of the interior. An inefficient layout, purple sinks, walls and carpets did not create a welcoming environment! But the moment we walked out on the decks, we saw past all of the quirks and fell in love! The decks and the dock totally sold us......having a large enough deck to accommodate the whole family with a sunset dinner overlooking the lake has been the best feature of our home. John is a fantastic cook, so we enjoy his grilled creations, fish fries (John Cross Whitefish caught daily out of Charlevoix is the best for a summertime fish fry), super big sandwich lunches and yummy morning fritatas. The deck is also the favorite spot for late night card games, sunbathing with a book or enjoying a peaceful morning coffee. Through a couple rounds of renovations, we have worked hard to bring the rest of the home up to a comfy and cozy environment. The South Arm of Lake Charlevoix is perfect for family fun because it is not too crowded and the water generally stays pretty calm. The area right off of our dock is perfect for water skiing, tubing, pontoon boat rides, and sailing. For more adventure, you can swing out to the main part of Lake Charlevoix (about 30 mins via power boat) and then on to Lake Michigan (another 45 mins via power boat). With a lot of vision and hard work, John totally renovated the interior and we are now proud of our comfortable, clean, and much more efficient layout. It may not be as inspiring as the view from the decks, but it is definitely not too shabby:)
What makes this House unique
We are so lucky to have Swan Valley Marina right next door! As first time boat owners, we relied on their help and guidance for the first few years. Now, it is so convenient for our guests to walk over to rent boats, kayaks and jet skis. They also sell ice, snacks and other essentials.

Great place on the water close enough to attractions although plenty of privacy.
Wedding at the Barn
Comfortable. Close to venue. Well stocked. Clean. TVs galore. (Great sports weekend). Beautiful view of lake. Amazing decks & docks. No problems. Very happy with how everything played out. ***** 5 stars. Thanks Dukes, for a wonderful time.
We were in town for a family wedding. In our down time we sat on the deck enjoying the view of the lake. It had everything we needed. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for your feedback! We always love to hear when our guests enjoy their time at our home....especially for such a fun family gathering like a wedding. You and your family were fantastic & considerate guests......would love to have you back anytime! Take care.
Room enough for 9
We enjoyed our stay at Duke's retreat. There was room for all. The table expanded so we had room for all. When we had a problem it was fixed that day. The view was very nice and relaxing.
Thank you for your note! We are so glad that our home was a good fit for your group and you enjoyed your time at our home!
NOT For The Elderly or Infirm
This place wasn't a good fit for us. We were the max (10) and it felt small. Luckily it didn't rain much and the spacious decks definitely were a welcome spot to relax and enjoy the lake. They were the jewel of the home. The listing said "suitable for the elderly and infirm" and that is simply NOT TRUE. All entrances to the home as well as stairs within the home are unsafe for folks unsteady on their feet. Many steps have no railings and the indoor stairways air either steep and narrow or twisty. The other major disappointment was the condition of the basement where several of us had to sleep, which smelled strongly of mold. When I spoke to the owner after the visit, she said they had been unaware of that and would try to rectify it. (The owners were very nice to work with and responsive). The other reviewers mentioned road noise and that is notable (especially at night when windows open for breeze) but not a deal breake. rFinally, the dock was seriously in need of a coat of paint and some board replacements, and the fishing chairs felt unsteady and were not used by us. All said, its a wonderful location for a smaller group hoping to enjoy Lake Charlevoix and the area but the home is overdue for maintenance and NOT SUITABLE FOR THE ELDERLY OR INFIRM.
We are very sorry that our home was not a good fit for your family! It is important to us that our guests are comfortable in the space, but this time we did not do a great job of properly setting expectations. Even though you and I communicated about the lack of railings and potential dangers prior to your arrival, I should have suggested you find more appropriate accommodations.
We sincerely do appreciate your feedback - and always work to use guests' input to improve our accommodations and the experience for future guests.
Thank you for taking the time to review our home -
