About Melissa Duke

John and I live in Williamston, MI, but completely love the Lake Charlevoix area! John, a graduate from Albion College, is in the mortgage business. I graduated from MSU (Go green!) and am currently a project manager for a communications company in East Lansing. We purchased Duke's Lake Retreat in 2004, and the first few summers we spent as much time as possible exploring the beauty of Lake Charlevoix as well as searching out the many places to eat, drink and be merry in Northern MI. We were engaged at Chateau Chantal on Old Mission Peninsula (about 45 minutes from Duke's Lake Retreat) and were married at Castle Farms (right in Charlevoix!) in January of 2010. So many of our special life moments have been in and around Northern MI! In 2009 we decided to start sharing our home with guests via homeaway and have had a wonderful experience! Although we would love to be able to spend more peak summer time at our home, we are so pleased to be able to share it with our guests. Whether it be painting a bathroom, installing an irrigation system or replacing the beach towels, we find upgrade projects every year to help improve our guests' vacation experience. We feel lucky to have met some fantastic people through this process and look forward to many more years of sharing Duke's Lake Retreat!

Why Melissa Duke chose Northern Michigan

When we first looked at the home, it was a bit difficult to see the potential of the interior. An inefficient layout, purple sinks, walls and carpets did not create a welcoming environment! But the moment we walked out on the decks, we saw past all of the quirks and fell in love! The decks and the dock totally sold us......having a large enough deck to accommodate the whole family with a sunset dinner overlooking the lake has been the best feature of our home. John is a fantastic cook, so we enjoy his grilled creations, fish fries (John Cross Whitefish caught daily out of Charlevoix is the best for a summertime fish fry), super big sandwich lunches and yummy morning fritatas. The deck is also the favorite spot for late night card games, sunbathing with a book or enjoying a peaceful morning coffee. Through a couple rounds of renovations, we have worked hard to bring the rest of the home up to a comfy and cozy environment.

The South Arm of Lake Charlevoix is perfect for family fun because it is not too crowded and the water generally stays pretty calm. The area right off of our dock is perfect for water skiing, tubing, pontoon boat rides, and sailing. For more adventure, you can swing out to the main part of Lake Charlevoix (about 30 mins via power boat) and then on to Lake Michigan (another 45 mins via power boat).

With a lot of vision and hard work, John totally renovated the interior and we are now proud of our comfortable, clean, and much more efficient layout. It may not be as inspiring as the view from the decks, but it is definitely not too shabby:)

What makes this house unique

We are so lucky to have Swan Valley Marina right next door! As first time boat owners, we relied on their help and guidance for the first few years. Now, it is so convenient for our guests to walk over to rent boats, kayaks and jet skis. They also sell ice, snacks and other essentials.

Amazing place with great lakefront!

  • 5 of 5

This place was amazing and the owners were so easy to work with! We stayed for a wedding weekend up north and even brought a boat up for a lake day. The dock was perfect for the boat and we had a blast on the lake. The house was really clean and the bedrooms were a great size. Overall wonderful place owned by wonderful people!

Best vacation week all summer!

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent the week at the Cedar House, where we found it to be very clean, beautiful inside and out, with a pleasant view, located right on Lake Charlevoix. The Cedar House was located near popular destinations where we took side trips, i.e. Traverse City, East Jordan, Petoskey, Charlevoix, Elk Rapids, Silver Lake Sand Dunes and Glen Haven! We always came home to the beautiful Cedar House to grill out, eat out on the deck, relax, kayak, swim, fish, sail, SUP-board and canoe, all right from the deck located on the Cedar House property. Perfect place to enjoy the kids and grandkids. Even made S'Mores in the mobile fire pit! Movies and popcorn every night w/access to movie channels, Internet, WiFi. A very pleasant time spent at the beautiful Cedar House. On the downside, the house is located right next to M-66, so getting used to the noisy fast traffic took about one night. We spent all our time lakeside, so this was not a real problem, it is just a very busy roadway! Had a wonderful week spent with family!

Just finished our 6th year at the Duke lake house

  • 5 of 5

This was our 6th year the the Duke lake house; thank you Melissa and John!! We have loved every year and have made many memories with our family and friends. The East Jordan area is convenient to Boyne and Charlevoix with only a 15 to 20 minute drive for shopping, biking, access Lake Michigan, ice cream and more. The decks and the views are the best and you can linger for hours looking at the lake. All the conveniences of home with the amenities that are provided make it that much more enjoyable. The home is clean and inviting, the beds are comfortable and yes there is road noise, but not that noticeable when you are on the lake side of the home. We have enjoyed every minute of our 2 week vacations and hope to make more memories in the future. Since the lake his risen significantly over the past few years, be sure to bring water shoes if you are going to walk in the water, there are still some zebra mussels. We highly recommended this vacation destination! Oh, and the stars at night are amazing!

Great Location & Views

  • 4 of 5

This is truly a great location. It is provides easy access to Charlevoix, East Jordan and Petoskey for shopping/restaurants/etc.

You can also enjoy the great view of Lake Charlevoix from the large deck which is equipped with an abundance of outdoor furniture and a gas grill.

The home is well equipped and includes paper products, tableware, cookware, cooking utensils, linens, towels, games, and books. You really don't need to bring anything other than your personal belongings.

Clear instructions on what to expect, such as garbage pick-up and yard service, was provided so there were no surprises.

There is traffic noise as others have noted. However, it drops off during sleeping hours. During the day, it is not really an issue if you take advantage of the lake & deck and what they have to offer.

Terrific location on beautiful quiet south arm of Lake Charlevoix!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this lovely East Jordan home the week of 4th of July. The house is located right on busy M-66 but on the lake side you do not notice the cars at all. Being located next to the Swan Valley Marina was very convenient for renting a boat and was no problem at all. There was a decent grocery store, gas station, and Little Caesars a 3 minute drive away. We brought kayaks with us and we were so glad we did. The quiet south arm of the lake where this house is located was not crowded at all so our boys (13, 10, and 7) were able to swim off the dock and go around on the kayaks with no problem. Our dog loved fetching off the dock too. Charlevoix is a lovely town about a 15 minute drive and 30-40 minute boat ride. There is some public dock space that we utilized to get to town via the boat. We really enjoyed our lunch at The Landing restaurant which is located in the "no wake" narrow area of the lake as you head up towards the main lake. The lake is plenty big to tube or water ski around. We found a nice swimming spot too.

With the lake being navigable to Lake Michigan, you have the opportunity to see some tremendous sailboats and yachts that are privately owned by people who have houses on Charlevoix. That is not something you would see in every inland lake so we really thought that was fun. As an aside, Swan Valley does not allow their boats onto Lake Michigan so we went up to Round Lake only.

The house itself is very nicely appointed and very clean. Great deck space and overall outdoor space. The bedrooms were decently sized. The three bedrooms upstairs share the one bathroom. 2 of the bedrooms have nice little decks off the slider doors to get a nice cross breeze. The powder room on the main floor is great to have. Kitchen was well appointed. Washer and dryer on garden level was great.

Melissa was terrific to work with through the entire process. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks for a great week!

Owner's Response: Stephanie - reading your review put a huge smile on my face! Not only are your kind words appreciated, but your vacation sounds so much like how we spend like to our time at the cottage! We love getting out on the boat and adventuring all over Lake Charlevoix! We also love just hanging out in the cove that the dock makes in front of our home, grilling and relaxing on the decks! We are so happy that you enjoyed your time and would love to have you and your family as guests again in the future!
