Set on a hillside terrace overlooking Playas del Coco, 'Casa Holmes' has won several awards and been featured in magazines and books on Latin American architecture. Every room and bathroom has a view not to be missed. People are spellbound when they first enter the house. The house fits harmoniously on the site. The house even incorporates the granite base rock into its living spaces.
We have taken great care to provide our guests with a memorable stay. We have a resource library on the flora and fauna and culture of the region as well as pool-side reading, an infinity lap pool that overlooks Coco Bay, imported bathrobes, local organic bath products, maid service and much more. All of this just a 4 minute walk down our hill to the beach or a 12 minute walk to the center of town. The location of this retreat villa is outstanding.
About the Architect: Costa Rican architect Victor Cañas designed the house. Cañas is Costa Rica's premier architect and his renown extends throughout Latin America. He describes himself as a 'tropical modernist' and he is known for his sensitive understanding of the site. His houses combine solidity of material with a lightness and openness that create a sense of harmony with the environment. There is no excess in Casa Holmes' design and every detail feels right. Casa Holmes may be Cañas' masterpiece.

About Nita Holmes
We both come from a strong background of art and beauty and have had the privilege of traveling and staying in some fabulous places. My husband, a landscape architect, and I could not pass up building our own dream home with a world class architect on a world class site. We designed Casa Holmes to be a place where our own family would like to return to while keeping in mind what we valued as guests while visiting new places.
Why Nita Holmes chose Cantón Carrillo
At the time of when we built Casa Holmes we had many sites to choose from. We choose this one because of the spectacular view with almost voyeuristic intimacy with Playas del Coco Bay while being removed enough to give our guests the privacy most of us relish. It is literally a short 3 minute walk to the beach.
What makes this House unique
The siting of Casa Holmes is extremely unique. We think its simplistic beauty creates a place to relax and reflect. Being in the landscape business locally we are continually doing things to the property to enhance our guests experience, ie kitchen herb garden, tropical gardens , and fruit trees planted. We do not pretend that Casa Holmes is perfect and yet we hope our attention to detail inside and out makes a difference to our guests experience. We want our guests to leave feeling pampered and rejuvenated from the beauty that surrounds them.

Fantastic place with spectacular views!
We went to Costa Rica the week following Thanksgiving. The weather was perfect that time of year...low 80s the whole week. The home is about a 30 minute drive from the airport and is easy to find. PS - The duty free store at the airport has the best prices on liquor that we could find. From the airport, you'll need the property management team to get you to the home. The management team is awesome. If there was anything we needed, they were on top of it (tours, chefs, masseuse, etc.). They were very attentive to our needs. Nita was also great to work with. She was very accommodating and made the process simple and easy.
The home is very near many of the restaurants and bars in Playa del Coco. There are a couple of grocery stores nearby, as well. The home is well furnished and we were able to eat many meals in-house. There were 6 of us in total...3 couples. The home has 4 bedrooms so there was plenty of room for all of us. The main master bedroom was definitely the best of the 4, with the bathroom/shower being quite a feature. However, the infinity pool is definitely the main attraction to the home. But I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the driveway...it's huge and incredibly steep. It made for a great challenge when it came to running up it during the week, for a workout.
I can't say enough great things about our stay here. Plus, the views are fantastic and picturesque. Our stay couldn't have been better. We will definitely be back!
Thanks Joe for you review since this gives potential renters an honest feel for what they will be experiencing. The homes with the best views virtually all have steep driveways. As you and others have pointed out ours is steep but manageable. People often chalk it up to part of their adventure here in Costa Rica. I think Casa Holmes is particularly unique since you have the intimacy of the waves and beach especially while hanging out on the main deck or in the pool. We welcome you back.
Incredible open view of the bay, and facing west for the sunsets.
We recommend this property for family or friends vacationing together in Costa Rica.
Stunning views, beautiful modern home, infinity pool.
This place housed 3 couples very comfortably: the master had a private bathroom, the downstairs studio has a private bath (views are obscured from the downstairs studio), then two other bedrooms on the main floor shared a Jack and Jill bathroom between them. The driveway is the only obstacle to considering this place to be perfect. The driveway is very steep-I highly recommend having a car so you don’t have to endure that climb twice whenever you want to do something. We loved it!
I am glad our home worked for your stay. My sister did the driveway something like 6 times in a row after walking the beach 3-4 times training for a marathon. 2 times a day is more than plenty for me.
Thanks for also pointing out that our planting has finally grown in on the studio below. We worked hard to get the privacy we wanted for the entire house but will need to ammend on our website every room has an “ocean view.” My husband and I personally like to retreat to the studio to relax or work especially if we have lots of guests.
Stunning home with incredible views - didn't want to leave!!!
We have just returned from a 4 night stay at Casa Holmes. Our group consisted of myself, my husband (celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary), and two kids ages 15 and 11. There are so many positive things to write about this home, it's hard to know where to start. The location is stunning - perched up on a hillside with completely unobstructed views of the bay. The driveway is a bit steep, as others have mentioned, but it did not cause any issues for us. The use of windows over almost 100% of the west facing rooms gave unparalleled views of sunsets, the surf, and beach activity. Our favorite things: 1) waking up to that view!!! We slept with the blinds open so that the first thing we would see in the morning was the bay (I could never get tired of that!!); 2) waking up early and reading on the deck (so peaceful); 3) swimming in the pool after time on the beach; 4) exploring the rocks on the beach during low tide; 5) pineapple smoothies for breakfast each day (loved using the Vitamix!!); and 6) just enjoying nature (birds, bugs and flowers, as well as a rather large iguana that seemed to live under the slab at the far end of the pool! He was quite entertaining to watch). We made use of the games and puzzles completing the wooden fish puzzle twice (all pieces were still there Nita!), and enjoyed using the binoculars. Overall the house was very well appointed with pretty much everything we could possibly need. We did not use the beach chairs, toys or snorkeling gear but if we were there longer, they would have been useful. Ample towels for beach and home were provided as well as some delicious local snacks and products to sample. We felt that Nita (and Lisa/Zindis) went out of their way to make us feel welcome and we truly appreciated how well they prepare for their guests. We would most definitely stay here again and could easily bring several more people with us and still have room for everyone!! I really do not have anything negative to say about our stay at Casa Holmes. It did take us a couple of days to get 'used' to living in the house - there are many, many lights switches and remote controls since it is a high tech home :-) We had a hard time figuring out the house alarm and invariably set it off every time we used it. We did not care for the town of Coco very much, especially at night, but we had some great meals at Citroen, Le Coq, and Kaixo. Overall, we had an incredible stay at Casa Holmes and have many wonderful memories!!!
Week at Casa Holmes in Playa del Coco
We really enjoyed our week at this VRBO - incredible views from each room of the house. The driveway was very steep but as the week went we got used to it - had a car so not much walking up and down. Couldn't have these views without the steep drive - and this is common for most houses in this part of the country. The beach is a hike - could probably make it in 10 minutes but not an easy walk. As far as the house itself, we thought it was great - suggestions would be adding a TV in the living area (all bedrooms have sat TV's) - and maybe improve the A/C in the living area. Kenya, the house manager, was great as well as the Zindis group! - helped us throughout the week. We used TicoTours at their suggestion for setting up excursions and Marco was amazing - he gave us so many ideas on things to do, places to eat, facts about the country, and he was so polished! - everyone in the group loved Marco! - they picked us up at the house for each excursion. We loved Coco beach - many tourists around but the area was not as developed as places like Cabo - you're eating outside in most all restaurants (tho food was good) - but no crowds ever that we noticed - the people were unusually friendly everywhere we went. Knowing a little Spanish helps but not essential. We loved it and will definitely go back - probably for longer than a week next time!
Thank you so much for adding your review and the house suggestions. Because I tore both meniscus a while ago in the US, I usually ask my husband to park at the bottom of the hill or near the beach club if we are are going to walk the beach. It is a 3 minute walk to the beach but you are correct the hike up from the short cut takes a little longer. Our grandchildren wth their parents were like mountain goats going up and down our driveway. I think they liked the challenge. Oh to be that young! l prefer the ride up in the car. I'll suggest that Kenya tells other guests this is an option.
It sounds like your group really took advantage of getting to know the area through Marco. I am proud of our house management team. It has taken years to get such a professional caring group. We are glad Wes and Lisa, the owners of Zindis, chose to move here and take this on!
I hope you and yours have a good rest of the summer.
4 minute walk to beach with a beach club that will rent out kayaks etc. Deep sea fishing, sailing, scuba diving, sunset cruises, snorkeling/picnic trips etc. leave directly from Playas del Coco beach .
