About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 2-3)

Second Wind cottage is a real home away from home...guests often comment that staying here is like visiting friends.

Great care is taken by the owners to ensure the comfort of every guest. The cottage is perfect for a couple, or a couple with a small child.

It has an open, airy floor plan with lots of windows and two sliding glass doors leading to decks that overlook the canal, a very well-equipped kitchen, and many small touches that help make your stay more pleasurable. We pride ourselves on offering a clean, comfortable, and well maintained cottage.

If you've never been to Ocracoke, you're in for a treat. It's one of the most unique places many will have the chance to visit. With 13 miles of pristine beach, it's no wonder it was voted the number one beach in the country in 2007. It's not hard to fall in love with the easy going, laid back lifestyle.

If you're in the mood to stay busy, there's lots to do from inshore and offshore fishing with native guides, biking, raking your own clams, kayaking and parasailing to shopping and trying one of the many great restaurants on the island.

If you're more into relaxing, kick back on the porch in one of our locally made Adirondack chairs and watch egrets, ducks and otters off the back deck, or chill out with a book or movie from the house.

If you have been here before, there's always a few new places to check out and a chance to rediscover why you came to Ocracoke in the first place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We came to Ocracoke for a getaway from home responsibilities, it has been more than we ever hoped for. This cottage keeps growing on us - don't want to leave!

The cottage is charming. It gave us each privacy and yet common area. We adored eating on the lower deck and grilling outside.

We found all the dishes, cooking utensils and even spices we needed. Everything was immaculate! Love the decor - kept finding a wall art I hadn't taken in fully.

We visited every shop that was open - great breakfast at Dajio, Thai Moon take out was perfect on a rainy night. Loved Zillie's.

Obviously, I could go on and on about our week but this fabulous dwelling enhanced our stay.

The people here are so down to earth, personable and full of information. My husband spent time visitine with the shopkeepers as I perused the wares! We did take a day to Hatteras and enjoyed the lighthouses but couldn't wait to return to 'our island'.

Thank you Steph and Larry for providing such a lovely, comfortable accommodation. If everyone enjoyed this stay as much as we did, the island would become quite crowded!

Perfect for our second honeymoon!

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with Ocracoke Island back in 1991 when we spent a week there on our honeymoon. Unfortunately, we did not fall in love with the fishing shack we stayed in! A friend of a friend owned a little house we could rent and we booked it sight unseen...that was before vrbo and reviews were available. We can look back and laugh now but we always promised ourselves we would go back and stay in a nice place someday. Well we kept that promise for our 25th wedding anniversary this year and stayed at Second Wind. What an amazing house and week we had!! Thank you for providing such a clean, cozy, perfect property for rent! We've been home a few weeks and miss it so much! It was so nice to have a kitchen stocked with everything we needed to prepare our meals. The entire house was spacious and beautifully decorated with attention to every detail. We enjoyed the decks, the wildlife and the activity along the canal. The week was magical and we spent lots of time at the beach. We went early one morning and saw a sunrise wedding on the beach along with an amazing rainbow and there were too many stars at night to even count! We enjoyed the local seafood (especially Eduardo's taco truck!) and looking through the local shops. We hated to leave but know we will be back someday. We have been recommending your place to interested family and friends, too. Thank you again for helping us create memories that will last a lifetime!

Owner's Response: Many thanks for the kind words! We are so glad you enjoyed the comforts of the cottage, and a fantastic week on Ocracoke. We often have people comment that staying there is like staying at a friend's house, and that's exactly the feeling we like to convey. Hope to see you again for another stay now that you've rediscovered the island. Thanks again, very much.

Can't wait to go back!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our week at Second Wind in Ocracoke. The cottage was more than we expected in comfort and coziness. It was outfitted with everything we could possibly need, was nicely furnished and very clean, unlike many rentals. The neighborhood was quiet and conducive to evening walks. The weather was perfect and the seafood excellent (Jason's Restaurant for fried shrimp was our favorite). We've already made plans to return to this paradise!

Thoughtfully equipped and decorated

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed this place. It's located on a canal so launching a canoe or kayak is easy. The house is open and airy with all the comforts two people need at a reasonable price. Owner kept me informed and made herself available for anything needed. The only negative was that partiers returning from Pirate Jamboree were a little noisey as they crossed the nearby bridge....may be more so in the heavy tourist months. All around a positive experience and more than I expected.

This was our second year staying at Steph's lovely cottage on the canal, and I cannot say enough wonderful things about our time on Ocracoke. Steph is a joy to work with and her love of the island comes through in the details of the cottage. It's such a warm and comfortable place! We rented kayaks this year and launched from "our backyard!" We watched sunsets after making a nice dinner in the awesomely stocked kitchen (really, we didn't need to bring anything!). And we biked everywhere! We are already planning our stay for next year in this house, because it is such perfection.

Unforgettable Valentine Getaway

  • 5 of 5

I am writing the review for this place from the comforts of it's living room. I first made contact with Stephanie a few weeks ago inquiring about renting the place for a surprise Valentines getaway for my wife. I basically relied on the perfect 5 star reviews left on this website to make sure I would come out of this "looking like the man." I have gotten to where I rely on reviews for various products. They give a honest first hand account of satisfaction. Hardly ever do you see any product with perfect 5 stars and wonderful testimonies. I am here to tell you that my wife says I am the man! She was very impressed with the choice I had made. So I call it a success. From the first contact I had with Stephanie (and every other up to now) she was very professional and friendly. You could just tell she wanted this to be as special for my wife as I did. This place is all it is advertised be and then some. The pictures don't do it justice. You don't get the feeling you are in a vacation rental. You get the feeling you are at home. I can tell the owner takes great pride in the appearance both inside and out. Cleanliness is an understatement. Thank you Stephanie for sharing your place with us for a memorable Valentine getaway. I couldn't be happier with how it all turned out.

What a wonderful winter get-a-way!

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to Ocracoke for over 10 years and have stayed in some great and some less than great places. Second Wind is great! The owner was very accommodating when we needed to change our reservation and checked in on us after our arrival to make sure everything was okay, and if we needed a hose to rinse off the salt after a rough ferry ride.

After being duped by many claims of "fully equipped kitchen", we usually travel with a kitchen box of necessities. We decided to chance it this time, bringing only our cast iron skillet. What a pleasure to find a truly fully equipped kitchen. Everything from champagne glasses and real coffee mugs to all the utensils, bowls, trays, pots and pans you will need to cook just about anything. Another plus is the gas range.

We loved the decks even though it was a little too cold to fully enjoy them, but during warmer months, with an Eastern view, you would be able to enjoy a morning sunrise sky, and the late afternoon without being roasted by the sun. And we were able to enjoy a beautiful winter paddle by easily sliding our canoe into the canal for about an hour of sight seeing and nature viewing.

As for the cottage itself: spacious, well appointed and most comfortable. And a really wonderful bed!
