Second Wind cottage is a real home away from home...guests often comment that staying here is like visiting friends.
Great care is taken by the owners to ensure the comfort of every guest. The cottage is perfect for a couple, or a couple with a small child.
It has an open, airy floor plan with lots of windows and two sliding glass doors leading to decks that overlook the canal, a very well-equipped kitchen, and many small touches that help make your stay more pleasurable. We pride ourselves on offering a clean, comfortable, and well maintained cottage.
If you've never been to Ocracoke, you're in for a treat. It's one of the most unique places many will have the chance to visit. With 13 miles of pristine beach, it's no wonder it was voted the number one beach in the country in 2007. It's not hard to fall in love with the easy going, laid back lifestyle.
If you're in the mood to stay busy, there's lots to do from inshore and offshore fishing with native guides, biking, raking your own clams, kayaking and parasailing to shopping and trying one of the many great restaurants on the island.
If you're more into relaxing, kick back on the porch in one of our locally made Adirondack chairs and watch egrets, ducks and otters off the back deck, or chill out with a book or movie from the house.
If you have been here before, there's always a few new places to check out and a chance to rediscover why you came to Ocracoke in the first place.

Perfect for a quiet solo retreat!
Steph's cottage was the perfect haven for my late-winter escape. The layout is very comfortable for a solo adventure or a couple's getaway (maybe next time!) Plenty of space, yet intimate and cozy. There are so many places to relax and let the island life sink in - whether it's down by the canal, on one of the decks, or lounging by the windows upstairs. The kitchen was stocked with all the tools and utensils one might need--including a French press and a coffee grinder *key for me* Additionally, the cottage is well-appointed and is obviously owned by someone who loves the island. Curated artwork and beach finds make for a very personal touch. Steph thinks of the details. Having access to beach chairs during my stay was an added plus. Steph was very prompt in communication and available as I needed to be in touch. This rental is a great value. Hoping to make a visit again sometime soon!
Many thanks for submitting a review! As you probably discovered, March is a great time of year to be on the island (especially when it comes to Scotch Bonnet hunting)! Glad you enjoyed the kitchen items, beach chairs, etc. We do our best to make it feel like a home away from home, and leave a lot of small things that hopefully make your stay more comfortable. Look forward to hearing from you on your next trip to Ocracoke, and thanks again for the kind words.
Thank you for a clean confutable home. They have everything you will need here. Great view of the canal and nice neighbor hood to take walks.
We went to the beach and had it to our selfs . we had no issues. If you get to visit The Coyote music Den. I brought my guitar and got to play a few songs. It's not a bar, but a place where all the locals get together and play. Very nice people. As far as Bars go Howards is a great place to get a drink, but thought they were over priced on their apps. But if you want to stey at the perfect place, pick this one. no Kidding 5 STARS.

Perfect for our second honeymoon!
We fell in love with Ocracoke Island back in 1991 when we spent a week there on our honeymoon. Unfortunately, we did not fall in love with the fishing shack we stayed in! A friend of a friend owned a little house we could rent and we booked it sight unseen...that was before vrbo and reviews were available. We can look back and laugh now but we always promised ourselves we would go back and stay in a nice place someday. Well we kept that promise for our 25th wedding anniversary this year and stayed at Second Wind. What an amazing house and week we had!! Thank you for providing such a clean, cozy, perfect property for rent! We've been home a few weeks and miss it so much! It was so nice to have a kitchen stocked with everything we needed to prepare our meals. The entire house was spacious and beautifully decorated with attention to every detail. We enjoyed the decks, the wildlife and the activity along the canal. The week was magical and we spent lots of time at the beach. We went early one morning and saw a sunrise wedding on the beach along with an amazing rainbow and there were too many stars at night to even count! We enjoyed the local seafood (especially Eduardo's taco truck!) and looking through the local shops. We hated to leave but know we will be back someday. We have been recommending your place to interested family and friends, too. Thank you again for helping us create memories that will last a lifetime!
Many thanks for the kind words! We are so glad you enjoyed the comforts of the cottage, and a fantastic week on Ocracoke. We often have people comment that staying there is like staying at a friend's house, and that's exactly the feeling we like to convey. Hope to see you again for another stay now that you've rediscovered the island. Thanks again, very much.
Can't wait to go back!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our week at Second Wind in Ocracoke. The cottage was more than we expected in comfort and coziness. It was outfitted with everything we could possibly need, was nicely furnished and very clean, unlike many rentals. The neighborhood was quiet and conducive to evening walks. The weather was perfect and the seafood excellent (Jason's Restaurant for fried shrimp was our favorite). We've already made plans to return to this paradise!
Thoughtfully equipped and decorated
My wife and I enjoyed this place. It's located on a canal so launching a canoe or kayak is easy. The house is open and airy with all the comforts two people need at a reasonable price. Owner kept me informed and made herself available for anything needed. The only negative was that partiers returning from Pirate Jamboree were a little noisey as they crossed the nearby bridge....may be more so in the heavy tourist months. All around a positive experience and more than I expected.
This was our second year staying at Steph's lovely cottage on the canal, and I cannot say enough wonderful things about our time on Ocracoke. Steph is a joy to work with and her love of the island comes through in the details of the cottage. It's such a warm and comfortable place! We rented kayaks this year and launched from "our backyard!" We watched sunsets after making a nice dinner in the awesomely stocked kitchen (really, we didn't need to bring anything!). And we biked everywhere! We are already planning our stay for next year in this house, because it is such perfection.
Power boat rental, clamming, boat trips to Portsmouth Island, sailboat cruises, National Park Service programs, shelling, inshore/offshore fishing charters.
