Get away to my Lakefront Home on Lake Sunset (vacation home rental).

The summer rate is $1,500; September and October are $1,000 per week starting after Labor Day. (I am happy to say that in the 10 years I have rented my home to guests, I have ALWAYS been happy to return the security deposit of $700, cleaning of $200, and key of $50) My home is NOT heated. It is a great location for deer hunting.

This wonderful three bedroom/one-bath home is on beautiful, crystal clear Lake Sunset ready for a family or couple. Enjoy swimming, fishing, and boating (choose between the two kayaks and canoe, or bring your own), in Trout Bay and beyond, the shores of which are surrounded by beautiful tree covered rocky ledges with precious water lilies nearby. Easy access to this wonderful lake. Enjoy family gatherings on the spacious porch overlooking the lake or down by the water at the campfire and picnic table. Explore the back roads and trails on wooded walks in the historic Green Mountains. Find waterfalls on a short hike almost as though you were the first to see them. Lovingly maintained, my home has a lot of elbow room inside and out. The 36' porch, part of which is screened, affords comfortable outdoor dining (see photo). From inside and out, enjoy fabulous lake views. The open living room with its pine cathedral ceiling promotes family gatherings and activities. All 3 bedrooms, benefit from the wooded views, as if you are sleeping in the trees while you overlook the lake. From the loft master bedroom, enjoy great views of the lake all day and all night. Come enjoy the beauty of Vermont, escape the summer heat with the refreshing lake breeze, explore the water and surrounding woods.

Golf Courses and tennis: there are seven golf course within 45 minutes, with more not much further.

There are also private and public tennis courts within the same time frame.

Theaters: Weston Play House -Weston Vt,

Dorset Play House- Dorset,Vt,

Paramount Playhouse, Rutland Vt

Vermont Council of the Arts-Manchester Vt.

Chaffee Art Gallery, Rutland, Vt.

Best Farmer's Market in Vermont, Rutland, Vt.

Enjoy the quiet and the privacy. Swim and fish in the incomparable water, join the hummingbirds and butterflies as they enjoy our many flowers, see the blue herons, hear the woodpeckers, watch/listen to the loons, the turkey buzzards, and the other feathered friends and you might be lucky and watch an eagle fish and/or eat his catch. It is beautiful and the water is breathtaking.

Most guests tell me they enjoyed it so much, they left only for groceries and perhaps a dinner or 2 out.

About Vaughan

Dad bought this property before I was born, and I built the home in 2004/5. I live here most of the time between May and the end of October, except when I am sharing it with old and new friends.

As a kid I camped out here, as I did with my children. Dad loved the lake and its incredible crystal clear waters; the most clear lake in Vermont (maybe the world).

My background is as a professional, and I am a published writer.

Vaughan purchased this house in 1944

Why Vaughan chose Benson

It IS a home, and is furnished as one. It is the best lake rental in Vermont.

If you want a quiet place with lots of outdoor activities you will not find a better place. It is solidly built and is not a camp. With an all wood interior, plenty of space for family, and very pleasant surroundings, it is ideal for families or couples.

Inside and outside you are looking out over the lake. When you get here, grab the loft bedroom, with its views of the lake, before the kids see it.

It is a place to which you will want to return, and one which I could never sell.

Not far away is wonderful and historic Lake Champlain which is the most important waterway in U.S. history. A short drive and a scenic ferry ride take you to 'America's Fort', Fort Ticonderoga, with its great views, history, and hands on activities for children and adults.

Lake Sunset is for someone who wants to get away from blacktop, box stores, and traffic, and who enjoys the outdoors from a real home.

What makes this house unique

I remember, before there was a road to the location, crossing the lake in a canoe sitting in Mom's lap with Dad paddling. He went to the Scout Camp on a nearby lake and fell in love with it, as my children and I have, and as you will.

As I indicated above, bring your children, and you will have them willing captives for the time you are here (and they you).

Or, bring someone with whom you want to spend some romantic time, just you and he/she, and have real time together, and fall in love all over again, and again. There have been at least 2 proposals here.

At the end of a quiet road with 350' of private lake frontage, the home sits on a little hill overlooking beautiful Lake Sunset. Easy lake access is available from part of the frontage. There are no neighbors beyond my lake home, and only friendly neighbors as you approach, with the nearest about 150' away. I have an outdoor primitive fire pit for BBQ, cookouts, and toasting marshmallows, as well as a small charcoal BBQ you may use. If you want a quiet place with happy children or a romantic getaway, with lots of outdoor fun, adventures and activities this is it. (Some parents with teenagers love it because they actually enjoy a week or two with their kids.) There are two fantastic family museums within an easy drive, but I have been told, 'thanks for telling us about the all other things, but we never wanted to leave.'

A beautiful house in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted with the cottage, which is a beautiful house thoughtfully equipped with pretty nearly anything that one could wish for (as well as an unusually well-stocked library). Vaughan was friendly and considerate throughout our stay, always ready with help and advice. Because we were only there for a week, and spent much of that time visiting family, we barely began to take advantage of all that the cottage and its environs have to offer. We have loved Sunset Lake for years, but have never had such an ideal situation for enjoying its peace and unspoiled beauty. We very much hope to be staying there again next summer!

Great week on Sunset Lake!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time at Vaughan's place on Sunset Lake and really enjoyed everything... the house, the lake, the view! The water was so clear, we swam, canoed, and kayaked several times a day. The surrounding area is also so beautiful. We wished we could've stayed a second week!

Heaven on earth!

  • 5 of 5

As you sit on the deck sipping your morning coffee, the sun's viberant rays sparkle like diamonds shimmering on the water's surface. The musical voices of nature smooth your soul until you are ready to play, swim, fish or go canoeing to explore the lake. Hiking the paths in the woods and exploring the fruits the forrest, to bring back your own bouquet of natual wonders to adorn the table for the next meal, is always a treat! Drive back to the highway, down the dirt road and you at at your favorite horse show or in the social world of hussle and bussle in moments. This cottage is a vacation paradise for the active or the reflecting writer. A place for a romantic get away, a family get together or three couples who want to get out of the city!

I cannot get back to this home away from home soon enough and I trust you will feel the same way too when you get here!
