In the center of town, close to the Parliament, a short walking distance to Chiado and Bairro Alto, with their nightlife, shops, museums and theatres, and on the route of tram 28, the most scenic tram in Lisbon...

The building underwent full renovation in 2004 and the project was awarded the second prize in an yearly competition that appraises the reconstruction of old town buildings throughout Portugal. Its major source of beauty are the glazed tiles (azulejos), dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, which are different from floor to floor, thus rendering each apartment unique.

Why Ana Cardoso chose Lisbon City

I saw the glazed tiles and the wooden floors and that was it -- decision taken! Also, I had attended school very close by, so everything felt like home.

Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

We were so pleased with this apartment. In a great neighborhood, close to shops and transportation, we really enjoyed the area. Easy to walk to major sights or a short taxi ride.

The aprtment was really lovely. It was very clean and the bed comfortable. The wifi was excellent and the tv had plenty of English options. the kitchen was complete, although we didn't really cook, too many great restaurants to visit. Having the pastry shop across the street and grocery store around the corner was very convenient.

Helena, who met us, was great. She explained everything and was kind enough to arrange an early morning taxi for us when we left.

If available, rent this apartment, you will not be disappointed! This was our first experience with Home Away and it was completely positive. We hope to rent this apartment again in the future!

Superb

  • 5 of 5

This was a highlight. Characterful, cosy and spotless. Beautiful sunny, light and homely. Everything one needed was there from olive oil, coffee to brollies and a superb CD collection. We felt like locals and loved the location as it had a typical old Lisbon feel away from tourist crowds. You could walk into the city Centre or ride the 28 tram all the way to Alfama.

Ana and Helena were just wonderful to deal with.

You do hear the sounds of neighbourhood life and the tram rattling by, but we loved that as part of just being there.

Great apartment! Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this apartment durian our stay in Lisbon. The apartment was even nicer than we expected. It was impeccably clean and well equipped, and for 2 of us it was very spacious.

We found the location to be very convenient. The number 28 tram runs past the front door, although we never actually caught it. We found it easy to walk to one of two metro stations.

Helena met us upon arrival and was a wealth of information. She gave us a map and made sure we new where the various landmarks were and how to get to things like the supermarket and the train to Sintra. It was a delight to be welcomed by her.

And was very easy to deal with for our booking.

We highly recommend the apartment and would be delighted yo stay there again ourselves.

Really Lovely!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed nine days in Lisbon and found the apartment to be exactly as described. It was clean and well equipped and very easy to live in. Nice thick towels and very comfortable bed!

Helena was right there when we arrived and very warm and friendly! It was very comforting to know she was there available to give advice and help if need be, which she did.

After a day to get familiar with the area, we felt very safe and the neighbourhood is well lit all the time and close to everything you need. A butcher shop and a bakery just outside the front door and other shops besides. A really great grocery store within five minutes walk open 7 days a week until 9pm. There is a real sense of community just off the major tourist area so you can slot in and live like the locals. However, you are not far from anything in reality once you get your bearings and it is all walk able. Having said that, you need to know that there are two steep flights of stairs up to the apartment and the street it is on is very steep as are most of the streets of Lisbon so if you are not fit when you arrive, you will be when you leave! We did the Yellow sight seeing bus for three days and found it great value for money. So much to see and do. Took the train to Sintra and did the Fatima tour, absolutely amazing!!. We found that you need more cash than usual as many smaller eating places and pastry shops that you may want to try, even in the tourist areas do not take a credit card. Even to book a tour not all the places took a credit card. Overall had a fabulous time!! Loved the country and the Portuguese people, warm and friendly, add to that this lovely apartment and it couldn't have been better! Thank you Helena and Ana. Pauline and Tom, Burlington, Canada

The apartment is in the perfect location to see all that Lisbon has to offer!

  • 5 of 5

The initial correspondence and booking with Ana was very professional. We received quick responses to our questions, a contract, and directions for accessing the apartment upon arrival where we met Helena. Helena was thorough in orienting us in the use of the apartment and gave us recommendations for nearby shopping for groceries/markets and restaurants. When the hair dryer broke, Helena replaced it on the same day with a brand new one. The apartment was clean and comfortable. Housekeeping services were a great amenity providing fresh towels/sheets and cleaning weekly. We made full use of the well-equiped kitchen making many meals during our 23 night visit. Access to the trams and metro were nearby taking you to the beautiful sights all around Lisbon. Use of the Zapping Card made public transportation very affordable. The Bairro Alto has an authentic neighborhood feel. We loved experiencing Fado music at the nearby Tasca do Chico. We highly recommend this apartment!

Beautiful but noisy

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a month in this beautifully renovated apartment, in the middle of the Bairro Alto. Not only were the tiles stunning, but the entire place is filled with lovely art and nice things (like real linens and pretty dishes, excellent selection of fado CDs!). Spotlessly clean, good shower head and hot water on demand, very comfortable beds (we used the fold-out sofa in the living room as well), and well-functioning WiFi hookup. Helena was wonderfully helpful, and a cleaning person comes once a week. Very comfortable!

Two provisos: the apartment is on the second floor with very steep and narrow stairs. If you have any mobility issues, this can be difficult (but, then, all of Lisbon is one challenge after another for people with mobility issues!). And the biggest problem: the apartment is noisy. You can get used to the noise from the streetcar rumbling by starting at 6 a.m., the butcher downstairs pounding on meat starting at 7, and the people coming out of the bars at LATE hours; if you're in the bedroom at the back, it's not as noticeable. But there can be a lot of noise from inside the apartment house, too. We sincerely hope that our experience was circumstantial, and that the apartments downstairs and upstairs will get back to having the quiet people in them that they used to have. But while we were there, the downstairs apartment had a young couple with SCREAMING baby that they sometimes let scream for hours, and the upstairs apartment had someone who liked to vacuum at night. We could hear EVERYTHING. Just as we were leaving, this couple went away, so perhaps all will now be well. We also had a construction project going on right outside the kitchen window, with a drill going all day (there are lots of construction sites in this neighborhood). But things do calm down after 11 at night (except for the Friday night drunks in the bar). All of this is by way of saying that you are in a real neighborhood here!

Having said that: we would DEFINITELY recommend this apartment if you want to be in the real Lisbon, right in the middle of the city, with real Lisbon people. This is not suburbia!

Five to ten minutes walking distance you'll find bohemian Bairro Alto, with its nightlife and alternative shops. A couple of steps further you're in Chiado, a more sophisticated district, with old-style cafes, theaters, and renowned shops.

Head in that same direction strolling along the narrow streets closer to the river and you can enjoy nice views of Lisbon and the river from Miradouro (Belvedere) Santa Catarina.

Walking a few minutes the opposite direction as you leave the apartment, you find S. Bento street with its antique shops and the national parliament. Santos, labeled the 'design district' for its cluster of shops dedicated to design, is 2,000 feet (600m) away.

Principe Real, with the botanic garden, several gay bars and clubs, interior design shops, and more antique shops, is located 2,000 feet (600m) from the apartment.

To go to Alfama and the castle or the flea market on a Saturday or Tuesday morning, catch tram 28 (for 1 mile, 1.6 km) (the stop heading in that direction is located on the street behind the building).

At the nearby Santos station you can take the train to visit Estoril and Cascais or enjoy their beach (30 minute train ride).

The Marina Doca Alcantara is 1.7 miles (2.7 km) away, with a direct 2 minute train connection to Santos station (which is less than 10 minutes walking from the apartment).

Lisbon synagogue is 1 mile (1.6 km) away.

Cafés, pastry shops, small groceries, restaurants, and old-fashioned shops go without mentioning, as there are so many of them all around...
