In the center of town, close to the Parliament, a short walking distance to Chiado and Bairro Alto, with their nightlife, shops, museums and theatres, and on the route of tram 28, the most scenic tram in Lisbon...
The building underwent full renovation in 2004 and the project was awarded the second prize in an yearly competition that appraises the reconstruction of old town buildings throughout Portugal. Its major source of beauty are the glazed tiles (azulejos), dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, which are different from floor to floor, thus rendering each apartment unique.

Why Ana Cardoso chose Merces
I saw the glazed tiles and the wooden floors and that was it -- decision taken! Also, I had attended school very close by, so everything felt like home.

We loved this beautiful apartment located central to everything. We were met by Helena and given some great dining and sightseeing suggestions. The apartment was well equipped with soap, coffee, spices & other things. We had been travelling for 5 weeks so the washing machine was a great bonus. Portugal was cold this year but the apartment has heaters in every room which we really appreciated. All of the instructions (for the tv, sound system, etc.) were easy to understand and the books & pamphlets available for things to see were very informative. We love Fado music and the cds in the apartment were enjoyed by us. The stairs to the apartment are steep, but we used them as an excuse to eat more pastries.
Good location and comfortable apartment
We found the apartment very clean and well equipped.
The historic interior makes this apartment unique.
Helena, the property manager was extremely friendly and helpful.
Beautiful Apartment Right In A Safe Neighborhood
I have to tell you that I have rented several apartments over the last few years in different European cities and I would find it difficult to find one as lovely as this place for such a terrific value. The location is terrific- right in the Barrio Alto district. There is a bakery right across the street, a supermarket is a five minute walk, 28E tram stop is close by and there were also some fantastic restaurants within very close proximity.
The apartment itself is on the second floor of the building. It’s a little tight on the walk up and it would not be handicap accessible.
The door to the apartment opens into the living room/tv room. A good sized couch, two chairs and four huge windows give the room tons of beautiful light.
You follow the French doors into the dining area with a medium sized round table complete with five chairs.
The bedroom was small but in Europe a bedroom is for sleeping and some ‘social interaction’ and that’s about it. The bed was queen sized by American standards and there were four pillows. The number of pillows always matters to me. I love it when I have four.
The bathroom is a small European bathroom with a small tub and mobile shower head. It was clean and everything was very efficient.
The kitchen was efficient as well. There were plenty of necessities, silverware, dishes, bowls, etc as well as plenty of cooking equipment. I made breakfast several times and enjoyed the heck out of it.
Overall I would give this apartment a 10/10. The highlights were the location, cleanliness, efficiency, comfort level and the ease of communicating with Ana and Helena who were the hosts.
If you come to Lisbon on a solo trip or as a couple, this apartment is perfect!!!!! You won’t find a more lovely apartment at this type of rate anywhere in this city. BOOK IT!!!!!
Very nice unit in centuries old building with great location in Bairo Alto on tram line. Great restaurants and shops in area. Safe. Up 2.5 levels, no elevator. Helpful contact. Only complaint was very noisy. Easily hear everything from upstairs and tram starts up early. If you are a light sleeper or have mobility issues this is not the place for you. Other than those issues a great place for a stay in Lisbon
Beautiful apt...beautiful city
The beautiful tiles of Lisbon were my favorite part and to come home to the lovely tiles and wood in this apt was amazing. The apt is quite large with a separate living room, dining room, bedroom and kitchen. Perfect location with easy transit access. Very comfy bed with plenty of storage. Quiet street.
Spacious comfortable apartment.
Great value for this spacious apartment. It is historical, comfortable and the hostess Ana and Helena who welcomed us were immediate with their communications. It was fun watching the trams trundle by during the day from the many doors and windows, all of which looked new. As the bedroom is at the back of the apt our sleep was not hampered by the tram. Highly recommend a stay here as everything worked great. Our only warning is the stairs are at a steep grade. As we are seniors and were traveling with 19 kilos in our luggage the stairs were a challenge. Helena helped upon arrival and we each took an end on departure.
Five to ten minutes walking distance you'll find bohemian Bairro Alto, with its nightlife and alternative shops. A couple of steps further you're in Chiado, a more sophisticated district, with old-style cafes, theaters, and renowned shops. Head in that same direction strolling along the narrow streets closer to the river and you can enjoy nice views of Lisbon and the river from Miradouro (Belvedere) Santa Catarina. Walking a few minutes the opposite direction as you leave the apartment, you find S. Bento street with its antique shops and the national parliament. Santos, labeled the 'design district' for its cluster of shops dedicated to design, is 2,000 feet (600m) away. Principe Real, with the botanic garden, several gay bars and clubs, interior design shops, and more antique shops, is located 2,000 feet (600m) from the apartment. To go to Alfama and the castle or the flea market on a Saturday or Tuesday morning, catch tram 28 (for 1 mile, 1.6 km) (the stop heading in that direction is located on the street behind the building). At the nearby Santos station you can take the train to visit Estoril and Cascais or enjoy their beach (30 minute train ride). The Marina Doca Alcantara is 1.7 miles (2.7 km) away, with a direct 2 minute train connection to Santos station (which is less than 10 minutes walking from the apartment). Lisbon synagogue is 1 mile (1.6 km) away. Cafés, pastry shops, small groceries, restaurants, and old-fashioned shops go without mentioning, as there are so many of them all around...
