THE JOHN H. GOODMAN HOUSE
The land that this house is built on was owned by John H. Goodman, my paternal grandfather. He inherited the land from Mrs. N. Stanton Gates, who was the last Denison to live in the Denison Homestead (which is just up the road from the house). He was a master gardener and took care of the house and gardens for Mrs. Gates at the Denison Homestead for 15 years until she passed away, and the Homestead became a museum. He, his wife, and his two boys loved Mrs. Gates, and she was very kind to them all. He created and maintained a large cutting garden next to the Homestead barn, so that Mrs. Gates could always have fresh flowers during the warm season. He designed and created colorful, serene gardens surrounding the Homestead. I remember a beautiful scallop shell birdbath in the middle of one garden. He used to put sunflower seeds in an old, broken pipe, and as he stood outside with the pipe in his mouth, the chickadees would come and get the seed from the pipe bowl. He tended the orchard, cut 9 cords of firewood every year to heat the Homestead, and was Mrs. Gates chauffeur and trusted friend. When Mrs. Gates died on February 9th, 1941, she bequeathed my grandfather 10.5 acres of her land, part of which this house now stands upon and is surrounded by. She wrote in the will that “he had been so kind and helpful to her. “ He was the only person to inherit land from her, as all the rest went to the Denison Society and is now part of the Nature Center. The picture hanging over the fireplace mantel is the front door of the Denison Homestead, where love and kindness reigned. We hope that you can feel the spirit of all who came before, as you relax and enjoy our peaceful little house on this special piece of land.
Mary was awesome to work with and so was the co-owner. The house was such a nice place to relax between activities. The kids loved all the toys and books! Thanks for a great weekend!
The perfect house for a quiet family vacation. The house is in a quiet wooded lot, with lots of privacy. You can't see the neighbors at all. Yet, despite the seemingly isolated location, we were actually a 5 minute drive from every conceivable attraction in Mystic: downtown, the seaport, the aquarium, Pequotsepos nature center, etc. Adults could probably even walk to downtown, but I wouldn't recommend it with small children.
The house is perfect for a restful getaway. There is a lovely patio with plenty of seating just a few steps out of the kitchen. We enjoyed having dinner outside every night in the fresh air. Suprisingly, there were no mosquitoes and we could enjoy the yard all evening.
The owners thought of everything for making guests comfortable. All the light switches are thoughtfully labeled. The hallway has nightlights (we actually moved one to the kids room). There is a booster seat, spare umbrella stroller, crib, step stool, and plenty of toys for kids ages 1-7, as well as a couple of board games. The kitchen is well stocked with a combination of nice dishes, as well as some plastic/non-breakable and sippy cups. Mary, the owner, was very easy to work with and gave us lots of good advice.
We were a group of 5 adults plus 1 dog. There was plenty of room for everyone. The rooms are exactly as pictured - extremely clean, spacious and well appointed. We loved staying here because it's on a quiet street but only a short drive to the seaport, aquarium and shopping locations. The owners have a table in the living room which includes brochures & recommendations of things to do and places to eat. The layout of the house is very nice (all on one floor which was appreciated by my 80-year old mother) and all of the bedrooms are down one hallway. There is a door so you can close off the bedrooms from the living room which was handy when someone went to bed early and others wanted to play games or watch TV. The owners were delightful to deal with when making our reservations. I highly recommend and if we ever return to the Mystic area we will rent this home again. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality!
Adorable little house with every amenity! We were a group of 4 women but the house would be perfect for a family with children. Great little sunroom to eat and watch the birds. Easy to reach local attractions. Felt like home. Highly recommend, owner was very responsive and everything was perfect.
My husband and I (and now 18 month old) often book homes to stay in for vacation - and, hands down, this was THE BEST EXPERIENCE we've had yet! We even booked another night there because we enjoyed our first night so much - so we stayed five nights in total.
The layout of the home is perfect; it's incredibly clean; the beds are incredibly comfortable. There's sunlight everywhere. There were toys and books for our 18 month old to play with. The kitchen is perfectly stocked with all the pots/pans/utensils you need for home cooking. The yard is amazing - our 18 month old could not get enough of her time outdoors. I really could go on and on.
Mary is wonderful - informative and incredibly prompt with her responses. I can't recommend this place enough for those with small children in particular. DEFINITELY BOOK A NIGHT HERE. You won't regret it!
We were two couples - my husband and I, plus his parents - traveling to Mystic for a family wedding, plus a couple days of vacation, on Memorial Day weekend. My husband and I had rented a house through VRBO before, with a very positive experience. We talked his parents into going in with us on renting this house for the weekend. We arrived on Thursday evening. My mother-in-law was a little apprehensive, but the first morning when we made coffee in the kitchen - and ate in the cozy breakfast room - she was convinced this was a better option than a chain hotel!
Two full baths enabled each couple to have their own privacy, and a choice of rooms meant each couple could choose a sleeping arrangement that suited them. We enjoyed having a private place with room to relax, have leisurely meals, and just "be," without the sounds of other people that we would have had in a hotel. Three of us found the Stone Bridges hiking trails that goes through the woods - associated with the Denison-Pequotsepos (sp?) Nature Center (just down the road). We enjoyed exploring the trails - and liked that laundry facilities were available after we got a little muddy...
This house was exactly what we needed: 10 min. from groceries, about 15 min. from the wedding venue, a very short drive to downtown Mystic and Groton. It was a good base for exploring the area, and for driving a little ways to look at areas my husband's family stayed when he was a child. This charming and quiet home in a beautiful setting is a gem!
