Craglough House was built by Bill and Joyce Carpenter as their dream home. Joyce is a social worker in the Social Work Department at the University of South Florida. Bill is a professor and chairman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The house is modeled on Cragside, a Victorian mansion in Northern England. David Elfring, a renown archtect, captured the spirit of Cragside but with modern conveniences.
Joyce and I fell in love with Colorado many years ago. We spent several years looking for the perfect spot. We found the current location in the early 1980s and then proceeded to buy all the land we could afford. By 1997, we had aquired 80 acres and then started house construction. Improving the road, bringing in electricity, telephone, and building the house were epic tasks. You will enjoy the products of the effort.
What a lovely vacation/anniversary celebration we enjoyed in your wonderful home. Our entire family fell in love with Craglough and all were sad when it was their time to leave for the Denver airport. Keith and I stayed until Wednesday morning and truthfully, yours was the first home we have rented over the years that we didn't want to leave before our time was up. Everything was furnished and appointed beautifully, the kitchen was beyond compare and we couldn't have been more comfortable. So, thank you!
Krista was very helpful and we appreciated the fact that she was there if we needed anything. Turned out we didn't, but we knew she would help if needed.
Please feel free to use our comments. They just didn't say enough good about how comfortable we were. The design of your home was one of the best we've been in and we've been in many. How blessed you are to have this wonderful place to visit and eventually live in.
We came in July 2016 with 15 people...a family vacation...ages ranged from 8 to 78.
Everyone had a room, everyone had a private bathroom, the views were extraordinary from every room and every balcony.
The whole house speaker system was a hit with everyone. I don't think a day went by when we didn't start off all working in the kitchen to make eggs and waffles and whatever other morning meal we could come up with. The size of the kitchen and the pro grad appliances were fabulous. We prepared and ate many meals together in the kitchen and dining area...one of the highlights for sure. Our caretaker, Mark, was eager to help and provide info on the area and things to do. We did whitewater rafting, hiking, Georgetown Loop, hot sulphur springs and list goes on and on.
Highly recommend the Craglough House for you and your family.
In July 2016, 14 of us (9 adults, 5 kids) gathered at the Craglough House from different areas of the U.S. to celebrate our parent/grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary and father/grandfather's 80th birthday. The castle exceeded our expectations in every way.
>Exceptionally clean and well-maintained: Big shout-out to the cleaning crew! The castle was immaculate. All of our needs were provided for, from the toiletries to the hot tub towels.
>Spacious, comfortable accommodations: There was tons of room for everyone to spread out and enjoy plenty of privacy, and there were also numerous places for everyone to gather together. We enjoyed playing games in the main family room, and the grandkids spent hours playing pool with their grandparents in the billiards room. The sunroom was perfect for enjoying our morning coffee. We converted the downstairs TV room into another bedroom (thanks to the sofa bed) for a TV-loving teenage girl and three teenage boys shared the adjoining room with the twin beds and trundle beds.
>Large dining areas: Enjoying dinner with all 14 of us around one long table made our meals extra special.
>Incredibly well-stocked, large kitchen: We cooked all of our meals over our 4-night stay except for pizza the night we arrived. The kitchen was equipped with everything a cook could ever want and was extremely well organized. We loved the long farmhouse-style table situated in the center of the kitchen. The Viking appliances were a dream to cook with and the pantry provided lots of space to store our groceries (we did a big shopping trip at Whole Foods in Denver then supplemented with a few items from the local Safeway).
>Communication: The owners and on-site caretaker were very kind and responded quickly to our inquiries.
>Noise: While the area is overall very quiet, the train (which runs alongside the house) kept many of us up at night. Also, if you're sleeping in the downstairs bedrooms (where the majority of us slept), the noise from people walking on the floor above you is really loud. I highly recommend bringing ear plugs.
Our only regret is not having one more day to just lounge around the castle, enjoying its many decks, exploring all the interesting decor, and spending more time in the hot tub. With so many wonderful outdoor activities, we spent most of our days hiking, fishing, etc.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. We will forever cherish our Craglough House memories!
12 of us (7adults 5children) wanted time away to enjoy family and friends. This place fit the bill to a T. Everyone had their own space and also big enough so we could all be together. We hiked everyday, horseback riding, fireworks and just enjoyed each other. I would highly recommend the house.
We hope to come again! The home is absolutely beautiful and spacious. The well-stocked kitchen, even though we brought what we needed from Denver, was a warm welcome! Erica, the manager on the property also made us feel welcome. She was very helpful when we had trouble with one of the cars and so happy to answer any questions and offer helpful suggestions. When it snowed one night she had someone plowing the long driveway the next morning. We loved the winter views from so many windows. The easily lit gas fireplaces made everything more cozy. The sound system allowed us to personalize our stay with the music we love. The kids loved skiing in Winter Park and Mary Jane. They had a great time one day at the awesome recreation center in Frasier. Our stay couldn't have been better! Thank you for sharing your little corner of Paradise with us!!
Fantastic describes this home in the mountains. Rustic and Luxurious. Sit on a patio and watch the sun set over the valley and mountain stream. Cook in a kitchen that begs to be cooked in....I can't do it justice in words. I'll say this...This home and this area of Colorado was everything we hoped and dreamed a mountain vacation would be......MJ
Aloha to you and Mahalo Nui Loa. Thank you so much for providing such a marvelous home for our family. We gathered from the east coast, the north country of Minnesota, California, Hawaii, and Denver, Colorado. It was a blessing to be together to bid a fond farewell to husband, father, grandfather, and brother-in-law. We loved hearing the trains go by and viewing the marmots at play outside. This was a perfect setting for a much memorable week!
