About William or Joyce Carpenter
Craglough House was built by Bill and Joyce Carpenter as their dream home. Joyce is a social worker in the Social Work Department at the University of South Florida. Bill is a professor and chairman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The house is modeled on Cragside, a Victorian mansion in Northern England. David Elfring, a renown archtect, captured the spirit of Cragside but with modern conveniences.
Why William or Joyce Carpenter chose Tabernash
Joyce and I fell in love with Colorado many years ago. We spent several years looking for the perfect spot. We found the current location in the early 1980s and then proceeded to buy all the land we could afford. By 1997, we had aquired 80 acres and then started house construction. Improving the road, bringing in electricity, telephone, and building the house were epic tasks. You will enjoy the products of the effort.

Beautiful, spacious home!
My family of 16 (ages 13 to 78) from TX, NC, and NY enjoyed a wonderful week in this beautiful, spacious, well equipped, and comfortable home. The scenery from every window and balcony was spectacular! The road to the home could use some grading to rid of a few big potholes. A couple small suggestions would be a first aid kit available (unless there was one we just didn’t locate) and maybe a couple spare sheets if needed. However, all in all, this was a perfect place for us to gather and make memories!
Beautiful Home and very accommodating for our large family
We recently took our children, their spouses and one grand baby to stay at this home and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Although I do recommend 4 wheel drive if coming in the winter (the road there and driveway can be tricky getting in and out with front wheel drive). The view is beautiful and we enjoyed using the sleds in the garage for our grand baby. We took advantage of local eateries and also enjoyed a few home cooked meals. If you are looking for grocery delivery service I highly recommend The Grocery Guys. They are thorough, prompt and great communication. The local grocery store isn't far if you are wanting to do your own. Everyone in the area was so friendly and helpful too.
The home didn't have many tvs which was an added bonus. We didn't miss watching at all. Every evening we would enjoy the fireplace on the main floor and played games. Plenty of room to spread out if needed but yet you don't feel like you are missing anyone!
It was a treat hosting your family! We completely agree that a 4-wheel drive vehicle is a necessity when visiting the Craglough in anything but the summer season. The road up to the home is dirt and not paved. Once you add snow it's much more comfortable to have the traction and safety of a 4-wheel drive vehicle at the helm. We are very happy to hear you enjoyed your stay and your time away from TV. The multiple fireplaces throughout the home are so cozy it’s nice to know you spent time enjoying them while visiting the Rockies. We hope to host you and your family again soon!

My parent's enjoyed their 48th wedding anniversary
Overall, I would say that this house was very accommodating and we had a great time. The temperature alarm system, we found to be a nuisance and went off twice on the first night (in the middle of the night) which disturbed everyone's sleep. It was never explained to us what the purpose of that system really was, only that it had recently been installed. We had a variety of ages staying at the house. My parents, my two sisters, along with each of our families, some adult children, some teenagers, and some toddlers. We all enjoyed the pool table area, as well as the hot tub. It was a lot of fun. You offered an abundance of board games and puzzles which also made for a lot of fun. The views were spectacular. Not one bad view in the entire house. I would give the kitchen and dining areas 10 stars if I was able to!! We cooked almost every meal for each of the 3 days/3 nights we stayed in the gigantic kitchen. There was enough room for those of us doing the cooking to have space as well as those that were just wanting to hang out and chat while we did the cooking. It was fully equipped with everything we needed. The refrigerator was gigantic as well and was able to store the many groceries we brought with us. The only other issue I had was the trash situation. The dumpster as well as the trash cans in the garage were all full. So we found ourselves not having any where to put it. When you have 16+ people staying in a large home, there is going to be a lot of trash accumulation. There was a snow play area about 4.5 miles up the road that offered so many fun things to do, such as snow tubing, ice skating, roller skating, indoor basketball court, as well as a rock climbing wall. Anyhow, with those few things said, all and all we had the best time and would definitely visit this house again!!! Thank you for your hospitality!
Glad to hear you enjoyed your time at the Craglough. It was a pleasure hosting everyone for your parents wedding anniversary. I'm sorry there were issues with the security system and temperature alarm on your first nights stay. The purpose of both is to secure the property and to prevent any major issues with freezing pipes. Often doors are not secured properly due to our mortise lock system and end up drifting ajar. Should a door blow open and the temperature reach below 45 degrees an alarm goes off to notify guests of the dropping temperature and the security breach. I'm sorry the trash was full during your stay. We try to accommodate the holiday trash by adding an additional pick up through our trash company, but this year the previous guests had many more gifts than expected and such a large load prior to your stay that it was difficult to keep up with. We will look into having a few more bins in the garage should we run into this issue in the future. So happy to hear you loved the kitchen, the views, and all the time you got to spend with family unplugged! Glad the pool table and the hot tub were much enjoyed too! Thank you for staying with us and we hope to host you and the family again soon!

Unforgettable home overlooking amazing view
My husband and I with our four adult children, three spouses and three grandchildren spent Thanksgiving in this absolutely gorgeous mansion on the cliffs not far from Winter park. Spectacular views from every room. Six large bedrooms with attached baths, breakfast table and dining room both seat 12. Two living areas with fireplaces and a pool room and hot tub. Great kitchen so important for preparing the Thanksgiving feast. Plenty of snow but snow plow came and we never felt like we couldn’t get out if we wanted to go into town. Fun watching the train pass by down in the valley. Craglough is the best of the bests!
It was lovely hosting you and your family over the Thanksgiving Holiday! We are so happy to hear you enjoyed the home!

The beauty of the mountain castle retreat
Our family vacation, July 2018, to the mountain castle retreat was spectacular. The home was a perfect setting for our large group. There were great places to visit during the day. We never tired of the variety of outside activities to experience. Our evenings started out gathered round the dining room table and ended watching the beautiful sunsets. The house offered lovely rooms to gather in and decks to relax on and enjoy the mountain air. The caretaker was attentive to our needs but the house was readied for the visit . We would love to meet up again in Tabernash and enjoy this exceptional mountain retreat!
We would be happy to host you and your family again! We are delighted to hear your stay was restful and relaxing! We hope to host you again soon!
