Enjoy the amazing sunsets from the deck of this beautiful house located on Bass Harbor.
This charming two bedroom cape cod style house is a wonderful, comfortable and very homey place to enjoy your Mt. Desert Island vacation. The dining area and living room have unrestricted views of the harbor. The large deck is complete with a dining table and grill as well as lounge chairs for sitting in the sun and enjoying the scenery.
There is a master bedroom and second bedroom with twin beds and a full bath. The first floor has a den/tv room with a futon for additional sleeping arrangements. A washer/dryer and full bath with a shower and full kitchen complete the first floor.
Launch your kayak right off the back lawn and paddle your way through the lobster boats moored in the harbor. Acadia National Park is just a short drive from the house as are wonderful restaurants, shopping and all the charm of the quiet side of the island.
We loved all the room to spread out and the large yard for our dog to be able to run and get some exercise too!
The house is very clean and well stocked. We found everything we needed. There are two bedrooms upstairs and one bath. Downstairs is another bath, mud room, laundry room, living room/dining and a den. The furniture is comfortable and everything makes you feel right at home in "Maine".
The only reason this didn't get a perfect 5 star rating from us was because of the closeness to the slightly busy street and the noise you hear very early in the AM from the lobster boats/fisherman. This is of no fault of the house or owner - and may not bother many. But, for us as light sleepers we had a few rough spots in our sleep.
The views from the dining room and deck are amazing - we had a couple gorgeous sunsets similar the picture posted above. We brought high end kayaks and felt ok about leaving them beside the garage. It was great to load the kayak right into the harbor at the edge of the lawn- very convenient. We kayaked once at Echo lake but, mostly just paddled throughout the harbor and explored a little island.
There a few restaurants down the street in 'town' and if you cross the harbor you find Thurstons- this place proved to be WAY too busy for us as many were lined up outside - not a good choice if you have a child... Southwest harbor a quick 10 min drive away has many more restaurants.
We brought our dog along and he loved laying on the deck - there was a handy hose near the deck which was useful to wash the dog after a swim or a walk along the shore.
Do be prepared for bugs - we used bug spray almost every night and I brought a citronella candle which we used as well.
The shore is tidal and you can walk out quite a distance - we walked the shore daily and found many "treasures". My son became addicted to finding "sea glass" - I had to explain that the broken fresh glass is just trash and to look for only the frosted kind... let's just say we had a lot of "extra" LOL - but, my one of favorite things to do since being a child and visiting my grandparents in Searsport...
If you want to explore Acadia and the Down East - but don't want the hussle bussle of Bar Harbor then this would be a good option for you. We prefer quite nights and peaceful surroundings.
Paul, the owner is very accommodating and very quick with any questions/concerns you may have.
Thank you for sharing your vacation home with us!
We just returned from spending a week at this lovely home. It was our first time to Acadia and we absolutely loved it! We have 3 children, ages 12, 10 and 6. It was a perfect vacation spot as we could hike and bike as little or as much as we wanted. There were plenty of "easy" spots we could tackle as we had our 6 year old to consider.
The home is equipped with anything we needed and so clean! We loved relaxing at the home when we weren't out hiking, biking or shopping. We actually enjoyed a day of rain we had so we could do a 1000 piece puzzle provided at the house. The house lends itself to relaxing. One of my favorite moments was sitting down by the water reading a book while the children collected sea shells and played soccer in the yard.
The owner is very responsive and easy to work with. He even provided a list of recommended places to eat, shop and hike. Everything we tried from the list was top notch and the recommendations were appreciated!
The only bad thing about our stay was the mosquitoes. They were very bad after dusk. I called it the Mosquito Apocalypse!! Make sure to take long pants/shirts and spray.
I would recommend visiting this area and staying in this home in particular. We had such a wonderful family vacation and made memories we will treasure forever!!
We just got back from a wonderful week in this house. The owner was prompt in answering any questions we had all throughout the rental process. The house is charming. It takes you back in time to simpler times and screams family vacation. It felt like we had just arrived at our own family vacation home. There are no modern or up to date fixtures but everything we saw was functional and adequate for what we needed. The house was clean and stocked for a family of four. We were able to make our own dinners (lobster-which we purchased down the road, fresh) and even bake a cake for my son's birthday. The beds were comfortable and even though there was no air conditioning we slept well! The stars at night were a real plus for us city folks. It is the quiet side of the island so if you're looking for action it's about a 30 minute drive to Bar Harbor. We hiked in Acadia, went sea kayaking, whale watching, had a great homemade blueberry pie bought from the pie lady, ate at fabulous restaurants-we LOVED Jordan House, rode our bikes on the carriage roads and walked around Bar Harbor. It was an excellent vacation and it was great to come home to this house every night to relax! We watched a movie from the owner's collection, listened to records, and even finished a puzzle of Acadia-a favorite activity for my 11 and 15 year old. I haven't even commented on the view from the house but I think the pictures here are enough. If we come back to hike the Beehive Trail someday, we will definitely book this house! :)
This home is like a small treasure that transports you back in time. It is artfully decorated and very comfortable. We enjoyed paddle-boarding off the backyard in the harbor and the sunsets are beautiful. The view from the house is lovely and we plan on going back next year. Everything that is needed to enjoy the week is provided even a record player with some great old albums. Thanks for a wonderful stay that our family will always remember!
House is even nicer than shown in pics and description. Perfect location, perfectly clean, perfect space for a lovely vacation. The view is so beautiful and calming. Owner responsive and easy to work with. Our dog really liked it, too. If you have the chance, rent this property!
