About the property

Founder Quarter, Leipzig

The area around Ludwigstraße is a very green , trees are on both sides of the street and its quiet at night. It is an old conservation area with many listed buildings dating back to the Founder-District of Leipzig. Most of the houses were built between 1880 and the turn of the 19th Century. Our house was built in 1896; it has 10 apartments, of which 6 are finished.

All the rooms get lots of daylight and have wooden, double-glazed windows. The trees in front of the house keep it cool during the summer months.

The staircase is old and still has the old wooden steps, which are comfortable to use. There is no smoking allowed in the flats, please use the garden instead. This is especially important as we have a lot of families staying with us.

The trams into the city are 200 meter away and the 4th stop is main station (Hauptbahnhof). You only need 15 minutes to reach the city centre. The S -Bahn (city train) in Leipzig goes to Halle and many other destinations. There are 2 great restaurants nearby in Eisenbahnstrasse one is called Mr Wok, and the other is called "Brothers". Both are clean modern and friendly - with great menus, including take-aways, and low prices.

About christa Mayke Turnbull

Born in Berlin, grown up at the Balic Sea, wwent to school in Stralsund. Teenager time was spend in Berlin. With 24 I went to live in Australia and I worked in the filmindustry, where I met my husband. He is an actor and we moved to London wher we lived for 45 years. David was working in London and my sons went to university. So I thought a new part of my life had started. I went to study psychology at the OU and after 2 years changed to study fine art and desighn at Wimbledon School of Art.

Finished my BA with a film about

'Tracing the Wall 'and fell in love with Berlin Mitte, I moved to Berlin and opened a Gallery in Große Hamburger Straße and invited all the people I met through my Art courses to come and exhibit in Berlin. The idea was to help young artists to get a good CV for their future.

Now I am in Leipzig investing capital in a beautful old building instead of a Bank...

My husband David Henry and I love this house, with its old staircases, old windows and all the other properties which have been renovated since we bought the house at auction.

christa Mayke Turnbull purchased this apartment in 2013

Why christa Mayke Turnbull chose Volkmarsdorf

Most of these beautiful houses were empty for over 5 years. We went to auction and we are happy to get such a beautiful house. Lots of repairs and work to get to the point of renting the flats. I love the old staircase and the old doors, its not finished jet, but we do the outside later and the carperts on the stairs too.

What makes this apartment unique

I love this old house, because I worked so much in it. The Street with all those trees, the garden will be finished next year. I love the old doors and all the walls in staircase area iare going to have its former decorations on the walls.

We are friendly, happy to help, let alone for you to have your rest. The old house is slowly finished, we hope it is sometimes just as nice as it used to be. Still much to do for us, but it's fun so to rescue an old house. Next year the garden is finished; flowers everywhere, a little peeking. Then the grass and benches around it comes as children can play and adult crickets.  The house is slowly finished, we are just waiting for the monument to us as we may make further to say. But the guests are happy with us and book already for next year. The Converse is, since so many houses were rehabilitated, always nice, so many friendly new inhabitants. The body Ziger yard is 200 meters away from us and has a beautiful old beer garden and the folks are friendly. I am happy in Leibzig.

A Huge Disappointment

  • 1 of 5

I am a seasoned traveler and I have stayed in many VRBO. When I was looking for a nice, quiet place in Leipzig for a four week part work, part vacation, I was excited to find Christa’s property advertised as being located in a “quiet area, tree-lined street, in the historically-protected Gründervietel area”. The apartment was supposed to be equipped with a fast, reliable Internet. Little did I know … This is what awaited me.

1) Christa, the owner, does not live in Leipzig. If you run into any problems, you are on your own.

2) Quiet area, tree-lined street and the historically protected area. In reality, this is a dirty, poorly lit street. The buildings are covered in graffiti. Many houses are missing windows as they stay abandoned since former occupants moved West after the Unification. Although I am a well-built male I did not feel comfortable walking alone in the evening.

3) The “quiet” definitely did not apply to the neighbors. The people, who lived in the apartment above me, used to get up at 4:30 in the morning and were very loud. I asked them to be quiet, nothing happened. I wrote to Christa. She was apologetic, but explained the apartment wasn’t hers and she could not do anything about the noise.

4) The Internet. Christa assured me that I will have a reliable WiFi and fast Internet, which I needed for work presentations and telecommuting. In reality it was very poor. Even simple voice calls or FaceTime calls were breaking up. It adversely affected my work as nobody could hear me or see what I was presenting.

5) Changing apartments. Due to plumbing issues I was forced to change my apartment twice during my stay. On one occasion, to an apartment of a lesser quality than I paid for.

6) Christa’s integrity. When I confronted Christa about the discrepancies between what was advertised and what I found, she admitted her ad did not reflect the full truth as otherwise she wouldn’t get “nice people”. For the inconveniences I faced, she agreed, both verbally and in an email, to recompense me with a small fraction of my cost. She promised she would be back in Leipzig before my departure to settle the matter. During my last week of, I sent her a couple of email reminders and also an SMS – no reply. I never heard from her. She never showed up. She never paid. She knew my stay was to end and I had to leave.

I am really surprised with the 5 star reviews for Christa’s apartment. Neither the place, nor the owner deserve it.

Owner's Response: I am sorry Mr Waldek was so unhappy in Leipzig, when he book the apartment, I mentioned to book closer to his German school. But he told me he was 56 and had a midlife crisis and therefore wanted to live in my apartments in Leipzig to travel to his school to learn German. The internet is the newest one from T-com, used in homes, apartments and hotels in Germany. Most properly not the internet Mr Waldek expected, because he needed a high powered internet for his job. We discovered 2 days before Mr.Waldek's arrival, the shower room in his booked flat had loose floor tiles which had to be replaced. He stayed in a larger and more expensive apartment and for 5 nights is a smaller apartment on the ground floor. He started to complain he hated to live on the ground floor. Afterwards, when the Large apartment was free again Mr. Waldek moved back into the large expensive apartment. Mr. Waldek knew that many students live in Leipzig and we are a Multu Kulty place but close to the city. After Mr. Waldek left his two apartments, during his 4 week stay, he never took his smelling rubbish into the bins in the back yard and my cleaning team was not amused I hope Leipzig including my self have cured Mr.Waldek of his midlife crises and wish him a happy life without Grafitti , with his lovely family in the United States of America. The apartment 3 has now a new tiled bathroom floor and new happy guests are living there. If you ever want to book again, during a midlife crises, please Mr Waldek stay in a Hotel.

Comfort in Leipzig

  • 5 of 5

Our 5 week visit to Leipzig was very comfortable and enjoyable thanks to Christa’s apartment. We have stayed in many HomeAway apartments before but this one was by far the best outfitted for travellers. There was more than enough space to put clothes, maps, food items, etc with many open areas to relax and plan outings. The kitchen was perfectly outfitted with all the mod cons. There’s even plenty of parking space if you have a car.

Christa was a gem to work with and all questions and details were quickly and easily worked out.

Leipzig is a growing city and it reflects in the neighbourhood. It’s one of transition and change. Many buildings are being restored to their original beauty and we have no doubt the area will be transformed in the near future.

It’s been our privilege to visit many lovely places in Germany and this one lives up to the description and expectations. We would highly recommend this apartment for your next stay in Leipzig.

Schöne Wohnung ...

  • 4 of 5

... liegt in einer ruhigen Straße mit guten Parkmöglichkeiten. Viel "multikulti" ringsrum.

Wohnungseinrichtung "typisch IKEA", aber alles vorhanden was man braucht.

Leider Wochentags um 7 Uhr vom Baulärm geweckt - sollte ja aber bald beendet sein.
