This is a family owned cottage. As a child, my family would come up to the cottage for summer vacations. Now, we all live in the area, so we use it to enjoy time with friends and for family at the holidays. My grandmother was a teacher in the area, my mom grew up in Muskegon; she now owns the cottage. I live and work here and manage the online account and do all the gardening at the cottage.
My grandmother bought this cottage in the 60's, and when she passed on, my parents took on the cottage. It is on a quiet end of the lake, surrounded mostly by year round residents. It was a fun place to learn to waterski and to just play in the sun and water. The lake was at an all time low last year, but with all the snow - it looks like it has come up some but is still an easy wade in and shallow.
On a quiet end of the lake, but just off highway so easy access to everything. You are no more than a five - ten minute drive from malls, the beach, Lake Michigan, restaurants, grocery stores - it is all here. Muskegon is a busy place in the summer with free music in many places, art fairs and museums, a WWI submarine that is also a museum, lighthouses, etc.
I can't swear to the dates but was required to put something in so took a stab!
This place is so deceptive. It faces a major highway & the front of the cottage is very unimpressive. But once inside we were thrilled! There was more then enough room for us all to spread out, 2 adult females & 2 tween girls. Sis in one room, tweens shared another & I took the twin bed off of the deck. Nice to not have us all on top of one another.
Lots of supplies including spices, pots, pans, towels, bedding, etc. You can tell that people have enjoyed the property and kept it well stocked & maintained. We too left behind some canned goods & butter and based on the cleanliness of the entire property had no reservations using the opened jelly, spices, etc for fear of nasties! Lovely neighbors, beautiful property & deck in back. Just loved our stay.
This is a nice property, the lake front is broken into 3 parts, 1) patio deck, 2) nicely landscaped grass area, 3) a sand box with a sun deck. There are stairs to the lake and dock. With my bad knees there was no way to get to the lake since I can't climb stairs.
The property is well furnished. Complete with linens, cooking utensils, dinner ware. The stove is electric and slants to the left. A very nice side by side refrig and freezer, dish washer, and laundry washer & dryer.
Most of all very friendly neighbors. Hope they weren't disturbed by our Maltese wanting to bark at the boats and ski doo's. This was her first time at a lake.
The bedrooms are not able to sleep two in the beds if you are people of size. If you are used to a double bed you will be disappointed. They are full size which is fine for children.
Kimberly and Mike were very helpful in getting settled in. We lost power to our side of the lake for about 1 1/2 hours and they checked with the power company to see how long it would be out and got back to us in record time.
I had trouble signing in on the wifi and Kim came in and set it up. Thanks again Kim.
If you have watercraft bring it along, there is a public landing at the end of the street. The lake is huge. Overall we enjoyed relaxing at the lake. Plenty of things to see. Michigan Beach, the Submarine, Cargo Transport ship, Farmers Market, everything is 20 minutes or less away. Grand Haven is about 20 minutes down U.S. 31.
We were blown away by the landscaping & back yard area! We spent the bulk of our time on the deck, looking over the lake in the evenings. Being close to the highway wasn't an issue, even with all of the motorcycles during BikeTime. You can hear the traffic, but it wasn't nearly like what we expected. The home is fully equipped with all of the soaps, detergents, utinsels, towels & even a small cooler. There are games & books, and lots of local info. The lake was better than we thought-warmer than Lake Michigan, and the bottom was pure sand & shallow-our 8 year old daughter can walk out 50-70 yards & still have her head up. The boat traffic was light, since the home is near the back of the lake. You step off the dock & it's calf-deep. It wasn't fishy-smelling & clean. There seemed to only be one water plant, that didn't impede us in any of our play time. The pedal boat was fun & the neighbors were fantastic, loaning us Crocs to wear in the water (for safety) & big swim tubes. The home is very close the Muskegon center & easy to access. Lots of history, museums, unique restaurants & parks. We had a great time exploring their city!
Our stay at this cottage was wonderful! The furniture was comfortable, everything we needed (yes, even condiments, toilet paper and laundry detergent) was supplied, the location on the lake was very relaxing and it was close to all the things we wanted to do. Even the neighbors were nice! My only disappointment was the "grill," which was an older, iron hibachi. I'm spoiled with our gas grill and having one there would have made it absolutely perfect. I've stayed at many condos and rental homes and this was by far one of the best in the things that count. Was it the most luxurious? No, but I've stayed in some absolutely beautiful places that I wouldn't return to again because they lacked almost everything else that I look for in a home rental - and I had to just about pack up my house to stay there for a week (bed linens, towels, supplies). This place really had it all. I would ABSOLUTELY come here again.
Owner provided great and accomodating service. Rental is small but clean and well maintained. Front of house faces major roadway but the backyard is on Mona Lake and is absolutely lovely. The backyard is where we spent the majority of our time. There is a small dock, sandy beach area and decking with chairs for lounging. Adequate parking. Friendly neighbors. Would rent again and will recommend to others.
Near to places for charter fishing, cruises, sailboat regattas, marinas where sailing lessons may be taken, bike trails - which extend both north and south and along the lake. Local museums including USS Silversides (authentic submarine and museum) , Frauenthal theater which features various entertainment year round, Luge run, and Muskegon Lumberjack (Tier 1 Junior Hockey League),
There is a boat launch 1/2 mile from the cottage. Downtown Muskegon offers Party in the Park most every Friday night in summer. There is a full service dog park about 15 min. from the cottage. Upcoming Festivals: Grand Haven Kite Festival May 16-18, Fruitport Old Fashioned Days May 23-26, White Lake Arts and Crafts Festival June 14-15, Taste of Muskegon June 20-21, Grand Haven Arts Festival June 28-29, Lakeshore Arts Festival July 4-5, Muskegon Bike Time July 18-19, Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival July 25-August 3, Unity Christian Festival August 6-9, Roosevelt Park Day August 23
