Booked this awesome cottage for a solitary writing retreat in a chilly part of the year. You know, you're always a little apprehensive when going to a new spot, but truly, this place was just utterly perfect. Hadn't been there for more than 15 minutes when I began to wonder when I might return. Quiet, comfortable, WARM, and a great location permitting water-gazing, walks around Pemaquid Point, trips into Damariscotta, Rockland, Boothbay for great food and recreational shopping. Everything I needed was there; many small details were taken care of for my complete comfort. Rental logistics were smooth and professionally handled. Easily the nicest vacation spot I have ever booked -- and I've been to some nice places! Imagine it's even better in the summertime. but I bet it would be awesome in snowy weather too!
"These are a few of our favorite things"-coffee and lobster boats in the morning and wine and cheese with the moon at night, Pemaquid and Musgungus Bay Lobsters, a Damaricotta River Cruise, the Farnsworth Museum, Primo Restaurant, Morse's Sauerkraut and Pickles, welded sculptures on rte 32, Ferry to Vinalhaven, Becky's, any Schooner ride, and just being there
Everything the other reviews say about Aquahela cottage is true. The house and beach are exactly as pictured in the photos. The location is stunningly beautiful and very private. The house is comfortable, clean and delightfully idiosyncratic, clearly built and decorated with love, not a sterile rental property.
There are lots of things to see in the area, though the place is so beautiful we spent many days lounging on the deck or lying in the grass next to the ocean. We visited the Pemaquid Lighthouse, kayaked in the Pemaquid harbor, checked out the old fort there, and found a hidden gem, the Verna nature preserve, where a trail through sweet-smelling woods leads to a true ocean coast, with huge rocks and crashing waves. There are many great seafood places, but if you want a change of pace (and you're up for an hour's drive and a splurge--not cheap) dinner at Tau Yuan in Brunswick is a unique experience. The food is superb, and unlike any Chinese food we've ever had in either San Francisco or New York City.
Laura was a pleasure to interact with. She is efficient, straightforward and gracious (she sent us a thank-you card with the return of our deposit!).
My partner and I stumbled on the cottage at the last minute, and still can't believe our luck--it was booked solid but someone had cancelled their reservation. We're planning to reserve a week next summer now!
The owner was friendly and efficient and getting all questions answered promptly. The location is great you are in the Mid-Coast region and can head north to Camden or South. Fabulous view, able to listen to ocean as tides go out and in each day. Sunsets are pretty awesome also. If your looking for quite and peaceful with beautiful view this is defiantly the place for you. We ate at SeaGull Restaurant at Peamquid Point excellent food and great service, views were great too. Reilly grocery is nice and you don't have to go far. Best vacation in a while, hope to be back soon.
We're from the UK and visited Pemaquid Point 4 years ago and fell in love with it. I went straight home and found this cottage online and have been saving it for a special event.
As you can imagine my hopes and expectations were pretty high and I'm very happy to say they were met and exceeded.
Laura was very friendly & efficient from the start, answering all my questions promptly by email and quickly returning our deposit after our stay.
The cottage is in the most perfect location on its own little sandy beach. It faces west so we enjoyed some beautiful sunsets but the sun also appeared quickly in the morning so we had several breakfasts on the deck in the sunshine.
We enjoyed some beautiful weather for late Sept/Early October and enjoyed cocktails on the beach as well as just chilling out & reading on the deck.
When the weather wasn't so kind we just chilled out in the very comfy lounge with the doors open, enjoying the views and listening to the sea.
The garden is a bit of a nature lovers dream. Monarch butterflies visited the asters and we watched loons, cormorants and seals from bed. We were also lucky to see 2 bald eagles flying over the deck. The cottage comes well equipped with wildlife identification books and we made full use of the telescope and binoculars for wildlife and star gazing.
The bedroom has the same fabulous views. We slept with the windows opened and listened to the sea. The bed was very comfortable - I rarely sleep through when we're on holiday but did on this trip.
The kitchen is very well equipped, as is the whole cottage - just those little things like arriving to find loo paper, coffee filters, tea kettle, soap, salt & pepper, washing up liquid, powerful shower, working WiFi make all the difference.
We ate out at King Eiders Pub in Damariscotta a couple of times and Shaws at New Harbour. However we fell in love with the cupboard café, which is a couple of miles away, and their cinnamon buns - we breakfasted there 4 times in one week.
We drove over to Mount Battie at Camden and Marhsall Point Lighthouse ( both about an hour ) and also went to the Botanical Gardens ( 45 minutes ) and Freeport for LL Bean ( 1 hr ) and, of course, the lighthouse and Pemaquid Beach.
We've stayed at many vacation rentals worldwide and this made for one of the best holidays we've had.
My wife and I had never traveled to the east coast together as we spent most of our married lives living on the west coast and mid-west. Upon our arrival, I could tell we were going to love this cottage. My wife's face lit up as she saw the beach, rocks, and water...finally she had seen the Atlantic Ocean.
The views from the deck and beach are breath taking. Watching the boats, birds, and waves made sitting at the beach very relaxing. We walked the beach for shells and sea glass...both were to be had!
The cottage itself is very nice...with all of the comforts of home. It is secluded from the main road... a small cottage is nearby...but not too close. We enjoyed the privacy that the cottage had to offer. There is plenty of room to hang out in the living room, cook in the kitchen .. with every gadget you may need, and the view of the water from the bedroom is fabulous. The weather was nice the entire time we were there, so we could hear the waves at night...a great way to fall asleep. There was plenty of information about the area in the cottage and quite a few books and things to enjoy while sitting on the beach. There is a washer and dryer if needed in the basement.
Before ending our week at this cottage, we had already booked a week for 2014! We are excited to return to the cottage and all of the comfort and relaxation it has to offer.
