We have enjoyed exploring the Big Island for over 25 years and love to share our island home with guests from around the world. As fellow travelers, we know how to make guests feel at home and welcome. We designed and built Bears' Place ourselves specifically as a Guest House in 2007. Having been in the Hawaii vacation accommodation business since the 1980s, we knew what features the home needed to provide guests with a great vacation experience. Our third generation of family members are now guest house hosts in training.
We chose the location, because we felt it was the best place to live on the island - close to our favorite beaches, handy to shopping and dining, close to a gorgeous golf course and a short drive to the airport. The hillside location makes for lovely ocean views of the Kona Coast, and the elevation of 1600 feet gives us the perfect year round temperature, so heating and cooling aren't necessary.
One of the nice things about the four spacious studios that comprise the guest house is that they also work great for family reunions and wedding parties - guests who want to have the whole home to themselves. Guests can cook meals in the full kitchen and have fun together, yet they can also choose to enjoy the privacy of their own space, complete with kitchenette for that early morning cup of coffee or late night snack.
Nice place to stay, near Kailua and the beautiful beaches of North Kona/South Kohala. Rooms are perfect, big and clean, with a nice lanai and stuff to cook on the room. Our hostess were nice and friendly, and they gave us nice tips about where to go for bodyboarding and snorkel. If we ever go back to Hawaii we will stay back with them. Thanks!
We enjoyed meeting Nanette and her mother Anne and staying three nights at their Bears' Place Guest House. It's located high up in a residential neighborhood and easy driving distance to any place on the Kona side of the Island. We were in the second floor Plumerial Suite and the only disappointment was the haze that kept ocean view limited. We ran into that on our entire Hawaii visit. The unit was very neat, clean and well furnished. We enjoyed the beaches, shops and eating places in the area. Compared to Oahu, getting around on the Big Island as far a traffic and road conditions is a dream. We would stay with them again and would recommend to family and friends.
My wife and I spent five nights in this lovely guest house run by Anne and Nanette and were very impressed how every detail was thought out with practicality and efficiency. The Orchid Room had a fully equipped kitchen with all the utensils, pots and pans, coffee, tea, coffee maker, toaster, etc. The refrigerator had an ice maker and inside we found two huge homemade muffins and two fresh fruit plates as welcome treats. And they tasted so good!
The queen size bed was very comfortable and lanai offered lounge chairs, a table with chairs. We often enjoyed peaceful serenity there with a glass of wine.
The Bear's Place guest house had a great location in a residential area, 10-15 min from the airport. We appreciated a beach cooler, beach chairs, beach umbrella and towels which was above our expectations. The owners, Anne and Nanette, came to greet us personally upon arrival and provided a lot of suggestions where to shop and what to see. We definitively recommend The Bear's Place guest house and would love to come back soon.
We stayed at Nanette's Place for three nights, last November. It's beautiful, big and cozy, we felt at home. Nanette is very welcoming, the hibiscus room has all facilities to cook, a balcony and we can make our laundry. It's 10 minutes drive to Kona. Wonderful stay, many thanks !
Our stay in Kalua Kona was most pleasant and enjoyable! Our 10 days of exploring the Island went smoothly to a large degree because of being able to settle into the comfortable, clean, quiet and relaxing suite and beautiful natural surroundings we experienced while staying at Bear’s Place Guest House. We had wanted to find a pleasant alternative to a condo or hotel and were drawn to the website for Bear’s Place Guest House. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised at the attention to small details that gave our accommodation a personal touch, eg. finding a plate of fresh fruit and muffins and orchid in the fridge for us to enjoy the first morning. Our suite was very well supplied with everything from extra blankets and linens for an extra sleeping bed, to a well stocked kitchenette giving us the complete flexibility to plan for preparing meals if we so chose. We loved eating and sitting under the covered and private lanai outside, surrounded by banana plants and inquisitive geckos. The design of the guest house ensures each suite to have a full amount of privacy and independence. We made good use of the free WIFI service provided to check emails etc. We were able to use the amenities of Bear’s Place o do our own laundry and dishes, and be able to even pack a provided cooler to take with us on daytrips. We appreciated being higher on the sloped hills above Kona where it was both cooler and quieter. Bear’s Place is conveniently located only within 15-20 minutes driving of downtown Kona. , or 10 minutes from the Kona airport. Travelling north on the Island was super easy using the nearby Mamalaoha Highway. Only a mile away from Bear’s Place is also a convenience store and gas pump, with a good restaurant/pizza service inside from which to order take- out food. We would certainly highly recommend Bear’s Place to anyone visiting Kalua Kona! Thank you to our welcoming and hospitable hosts, Nanette and Anne!
We enjoyed our stay. Bears Place was centrally located, clean and comfortable. Nanette and Anne did all they could to make us feel at home -- from leaving a breakfast in the refrigerator to leaving a snack for us each night.
We truly enjoyed our 3 night stay in the Orchid suite. Very comfortable and the owners were warm and welcoming. An incredible value. We will recommend the Bears' Place to our friends and family!
A great home-base for exploring the Big Island of Hawaii. Centrally located 7 miles north of downtown Kailua Kona, at a comfortable elevation in a quiet neighborhood, we are 10-15 minutes from the airport and the beautiful beaches along the Kona-Kohala Coast. We are half a mile ifrom the picturesque Makalei Hawaii Golf Course. Waimea is a half hour drive, and Hilo and Volcanoes National Park make a great day trip.
Other Activities: Whalewatching, manta ray diving, zip lining, swimming with dolphins, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and boogieboarding.
