Nebo Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Come and Enjoy our quaint cabin home!!

Stoney River Cabin is a private vacation retreat located in a small residential community near Lake James. Our cabin is for those who appreciate the outdoors and a rustic cabin experience, that is still comfortable and charming. The cabin is within the Pisgah National Forest and wilderness area at the foot of the Linville Gorge close to tons of really great easy to strenuous hiking trails.

The cabin is in a small community of about 10 homes with 2 year round families. Our wonderful neighbors are part of the reason guests return again and again.

Lake James is a 6,510 acre lake which has more than 150 miles of shoreline and located at the base of the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area.

The cabin is convenient to the Pisgah Loop Scenic Byway, Table Rock and Hawksbill mountains, Linville Falls, the Linville Gorge, and the city of Asheville.

There is excellent access to Lake James, just 2 miles by road from a public/boat access area and 1/2 mile by river via your own kayak.

You have access to the Linville River is just behind the house for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and swimming. The cabin is available year round.

About Karen Henessee

We are small investors of real estate, who love the outdoors.

Karen Henessee purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Karen Henessee chose North Carolina

This is a beautiful property very close to wonderful outdoor adventures.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin is made mostly of wood and stone - natural materials, constructed in the 1930s. There is something very earthy about being here - very healing. It will revitalize you from the inside out. Swim or float down the Linville River on a hot summer day, just behind the house. Relax on the screened in porch. Hike the Linville Gorge - the 'Grand Canyon' of the southeast - a quick drive from the cabin.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had such a nice time. My only complaint is that we couldn't stay longer:-(

We definitely hope to go back sometime in the fall. The cabin is so sweet. You have have done a wonderful job with creating a cozy indoor and outdoor home away from home. There is so much to explore so we only got a little taste on this trip, venturing up 105 to Linville Falls and relaxing around Lake James.

So glad I found out about the cabin!

Hidden Gem!

  • 5 of 5

Wow! What a fun time we had! My husband and I took our 3 boys (9, 11, and 13 yrs) on an "outdoor" family vacation but had no idea how much of a great time was ahead of us. This Cabin is so charming and comfortable with all of the amenities PLUS. We absolutely loved the river in the back of the house and boys had hours of fun tubing down it. The neighbors were all so nice/welcoming and helpful. My boys loved using the mountain bikes from the shed and roasting s'mores on the fire at night! The cabin is located so close to everything including Lake James State Park with a ton of things to do! Morganton is very close and such a sweet town. Don't forget to check out the Linville Caverns and Falls and if you want more thrills, ziplining at the Beanstalk Journey in Catawba Meadows or tubing/Kayaking down 6 miles on Green River Cove, so much fun! Thank you to the owner who recommended most of our activities and made our summer vacation one to remember! What a hidden little gem, highly recommended and absolutely receives a stamp of approval by this family! We definitely plan on revisiting... Thank you!!!

Great cabin

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was all we had hoped for and more. Two very comfortable bedrooms, two common areas, a large bathroom, fantastic kitchen, screened porch and a front porch. My father enjoyed the fire pit even though it was summer. It was nice to have the washer and dryer to use in preparation for the next week of vacation. The air conditioners were good to have when the weather was hot.

The river access did not allow us to put in our kayaks but only because the river was low and our kayaks are not plastic. Otherwise, we could have easily put in there. We did take advantage of all the put-in places on Lake James for our kayaks but my favorite was the Hidden Cove boat launch area.

The neighborhood dog was so sweet! He checked on us every day and liked everyone.

There is a good movie selection in the cabin, games and puzzles. There is a porch swing on the screened porch that was very enjoyable.

This is a great cabin, good location with friendly neighbors. We had two cars and plenty of parking.

Homey and comfy Lake James cabin

  • 5 of 5

A well-equipped cabin close to Lake James and Linville Gorge. For four friends who like to cook and eat, we found a spacious kitchen equipped with the necessary small appliances and pots, and plenty of tableware and dishes. We used the small screen porch off the kitchen to gather for appetizers in the late afternoons. In the evenings we played the board and card games. The bathroom includes washer and dryer had we needed them. The trails in Lake James State Park are just up the road. For a longer excursion, we drove over to Linville Falls to hike and picnic. The two bedrooms can accommodate 2 couples or 2 singles. One of us slept on a cot, surprisingly comfortable, and the other on a sofa. The propane heaters provided just the right amount of heat when we needed it.

Calling all hikers - stone cabin nestled harmoniously in NC mountain / lake playground

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here! The cottage fits into the landscape beautifully, with smooth rocks pulled straight from the river and warm woods on all surfaces. We loved the roaring fireplace which kept us toasty for board games. We were surprised by the open roominess and the large kitchen. The bed is super comfy, with a cozy down mattress-topper and down quilts. Even the bathroom was more than we expected, with a laundry machine and plenty of space. The hosts were very responsive to all our questions and needs. We visited in December, and the neighborhood was quiet and peaceful.

From this comfortable cabin, we were able to connect effortlessly with the best of the gorgeous NC outdoors. It was too cold for us to swim in December, but in the summer one could wander out the back door to tube or kayak in the Linville River, and let the current float you down into Lake James in 10 minutes - we’ll definitely be back for that!

A pleasant 30 minute walk (1.5 miles, mostly down an old forest service road) connected us to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, from where we explored the southern end of Linville Gorge. We didn’t make it up to Table Rock, but that’ll be our goal next time we visit! A visit to the Silver Fork Winery 30 minutes away to watch the sunset over the ridges, warm our feet by their fire pit, and listen to live music was the perfect ending to a beautiful day. What a lovely location, to be able to hike and visit a winery in the same day.

Cozy home away from home

  • 4 of 5

We were impressed with the communication of the owners. They always answered each of our questions in a timely manner and gave us the information we needed. The cabin was comfortable and provided us with lots of amenities. We enjoyed game nights on the nice screened in porch as well as breakfast and conversation around the large kitchen table.

I do want to mention to anyone looking to swim in Lake James, as I was, unless you have a boat, the only nearby place to actually get into the lake is 5 miles down the road and will cost you $5 a head. I did wish I had known that prior to our booking. We live in the beautiful mountains of WNC and only went to Nebo to swim and enjoy Lake James. I will say, though. The wonderful state park is lovely and full of lots of activities; some that don't cost anything. Well worth going and spending a day.

Owner's Response: Dear Brianna - We are so happy you enjoyed your stay. The state park did recently begin charging for swimming - but only in the summer time. We will make a point of sharing that info with guests. All guests also have the option of swimming in the Linville River right behind the cabin. You put kayaks or canoes in the river behind our house and pattle around this lovely part of the Linville River. It is clean, clear and inviting. We hope you will return soon. Best wishes, Teri and Jo
