Everyone knows everyone ... your hosts are part of the village. Equidistant from the best parts of the Nicoya Peninsula. Laundry faciities and pool. Kitchen. Great fishing. Much wildlife ... monkeys, iguanas, birds. Breezy and cool.

About James O'Callaghan
My name is Jim O Callaghan. I am a descendant of the royal family of Munster, one of the 4 independent provinces of Ireland before the British invaded and *%$&!ed everything up.
James O'Callaghan purchased this Cabin in 2005
Why James O'Callaghan chose Cabuya
I was looking for a beachfront hotel property with a bar and restaurant. This property was in a stunning location with a lot of animal life but was derelict and incomplete. It took a lot of time and money to repair, renovate and complete it. But I love this place. It is my paradise.
What makes this Cabin unique
Beautiful cabinas with private kitchens and baths surrounding the pool, on the beach, partially shrouded by jungle canopy inhabited by howler and capuchin monkeys, in the quiet fishing community of Cabuya, 6km away from the noise and nightlife of Montezuma. Small and very private. The best fresh fish every day. Excellent snorkeling and fishing, sea kayaking, decent surfing. Perfect climate most of the year.

Misrepresentation. Poorly managed
This property is not well maintained nor as represented on website. No oven coffee maker blender or working stove. Freezer door broke and old broken fridge sitting on patio. 3 ft wasp/ hornet nest adjacent from open windows with no screens. Kayaks leak per management warning. Beach is rocky and not a walking beach. Beach chairs rusty and no cushions. We chose to leave and owner refused to give any refund even after a written promise from manager.
This woman and her husband were terrible from the moment they got here. The woman never made eye contact. Her husband was aggressive and demanding. They picked apart the place upon arrival when we were fully booked, everyone else was enjoying themselves here. In the end I got rid of them as fast as I could because they were disturbing the guests with their aggressiveness, sulking, and threatening behavior. Never seen anything like it. Too many lies to cover here. They complained about a wasp nest 20’ from their cabina on our house 10’ up, but these wasps never came near them and they have NEVER bothered anyone. This colony has been here for over a decade. We told them that. They lied or were ignorant of everything, there is a coffee maker in every kitchen, the kayaks do not leak, there are no screens because we have no flies or mosquitos and they impede airflow and views. They smeared us because they did not want to abide by the CANCELLATION POLICY THAT THEY AGREED TO. They lost their deposit and PER THE HOMEAWAY CANCELLATION POLICY. They could not come up with any valid reason. Only imaginary things. The woman used foul language (the f word, in an email, where she too tried to intimidate me, I have it if anyone wants to see it), the man pointed his finger, spoke aggressively and loudly, they were both very arrogant. Everyone else around was not and were enjoying the place, as the many excellent reviews that we get attest to. We are not perfect, it is not for everyone, but a lot of people appreciate and understand this place, and if they are not one of those people, maybe they are the 5-star hotel type, used to perfectly square gypsum board walls in each room and the latest American Standard fixtures in the toilet, that’s fine, but you do not stoop to intimidation, aggressiveness, lying, defamation, expletives, and threat of legal action, when you do not get your way when trying to weasel out of an agreement. We try to explain and illustrate exactly what the Howler Monkey Hotel both is and is not, on all the online travel agencies and websites. Just awful behavior. And they were in the wrong. All that angry arrogant bluster and defamation was just a smokescreen to cover that up or to try to justify it. In the end they carried out the threat behind their extortion - they published this review here and on the HomeAway website, and put up 8 pictures on this one. They showed a picture of our sheets drying. Shocking! Now the secret is out – we wash our sheets!
Off the beaten track, dog lovers dream
If you don't mind roughing it a bit, this spot in the jungle has lots of charm, a clean pool, and nightly howler monkey calls
The Howler Monkey Hotel was a wonderful place to spend a few nights with our 9 month old son. The cabins are beautiful, teak, A-Frame structures. We always felt safe leaving Oskar to sleep above us, while we stayed up in the evenings down below enjoying a drink, hammock swing or swim in the pool.
The proximity to the beach and jungle was wonderful as well. There is nothing like falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and waking to the sounds of the howler monkeys :) As it is a bit off of the beaten path (which we loved), having a vehicle was nice, as we could check out Montezuma and the surrounding areas on our own accord.
Jim, the owner, is a really friendly guy. He had recommendations for all of my questions, had a ton of great stories and was always super friendly and accommodating towards Oskar.
We always felt safe and secure. Great place. Thanks Jim!
Thank you so much for the kind review,Benjy misses Oskar.
Best regards Jim O Callaghan (owner)
Perfect home for our Costa Rica holiday
My boyfriend and I stayed 10 nights at the Howler Monkey Hotel. (We stayed here while we spent time touring around the south end of the peninsula. Though we did do a fair amount of cycling, I would recommend a car travelling further distances.) While we stayed at the howler monkey hotel, it felt like we had our own little home right on the water. We absolutely loved having a kitchen! We went to the nearby grocery store to pick up fresh fruits, veggies and meat almost daily. Every morning we had a fresh smoothie. It was great! Jim, the owner, was excellent. He is so friendly and helpful. We were very happy with our stay :)
Thanks a million for such a fantastic review you have just made my day.
Nice place to relax
I went for a couple of days with two friends and found what we were looking for, an easy going place to relax.
The host was very kind and helped us go around. Santa Teresa is not far away but 4WD (or a bike) is better.
Idyllic stay at the Howler Monkey Hotel
I am currently spending 12 months backpacking with my 8 year old twins and we just spent 10 wonderful days at the Howler Monkey Hotel. None of us wanted to leave and the kids asked me repeatedly on our bus to Montezuma could we go back. The cabins are a beautiful A-frame and the upstairs sleeping area is spacious and very cool. We used the fan though there were some nights we did not need to. We fell asleep and awoke to the sound of the ocean and occasionally, to our delight the sound of Howler Monkeys. Each cabin comes with a good basic kitchen with fridge and gas cooker and a bathroom. There are two supermarkets in walking distance and a few sodas and a very good bakery cafe. The local bus service gets you to Montezuma and Cabano on a regular basis. We did not have a car and never felt like we needed one.
Having Jim the owner onsite gave me an additional sense of security in knowing someone was always around. He offered heaps of advice and assistance and as a manager remained unobtrusive but was there when you needed him. My son in particular developed a real soft spot for Jim and loved some of the stories he told him. I also enjoyed some lovely conversations with him. We fell in love with the resident dogs and once again there was that added bonus of security with them being around in addition to being an extra bit of personality. The location is superb in that you walk straight out onto the beach and can walk across to Isla Cabuya on low tide. We absolutely loved our time at the Howler Monkey Hotel and could not recommend it highly enough.
Close to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, Rio Lajas and the Montezuma waterfalls.
