Frequent so-happy visitor
Carmel has always been a favorite place - and for about twenty years, every time I go to Carmel, I make an effort to stay only in this wonderful property. I have stayed just a week, and taken the house for a month at a time a number of times. Both are fantastic.
It is just outside town, feels extremely private, with a wonderful view of Point Lobos and of the water. There is a beach just off the private yard, and a very long trail along the beach or up on a trail that leads into Carmel.
Honestly, everyone I have ever gone there with spends most of the time cooking meals, sitting around on the decks outside or sitting around in front of the fire inside. Be sure to ask for two loads of wood, because you won't want to leave the house very often!
· By Texas visitor from Fort Worth, Texas on 2/11/2010 for a stay in 1/1/2010 Whalers Cottage #2
We first visited the Whaler's Cottage last year to celebrate a 70th birthday. We had family visit and what a wonderful time we had. We cooked most of our dinners and unlike other rentals the knives were sharp (very important) and if not, there was a knife sharpener.
This year we invited a couple from Indiana that are old friends of ours. They could not believe the location and views that we experienced. Every morning one of them said "oh, another day of ocean TV!". Lots to do in surrounding area if you are not golfers. We loved the trails from the cottage down to the river and back. Point Lobos state reserve is not to be missed. Also, we were able to see butterflies in Pacific Grove. Again we ate meals in the evening at the cottage and marveled at the well stocked kitchen.
We like three restaurants: The Red House, Fish Wives and not to be missed, The Roadhouse for shrimp and grits.
Great beds, great views, and very, very clean.
We will plan on a 2017 visit.
A great week at an unbelievable place. One of the most beautiful settings on earth.
This property could not be better located, away from the road and facing directly on to Monastery beach and the bay.
Superb views in a well appointed property. Our family were blown away with the stunning location.
Local to shops, Carmel, Point Lobos nature reserve, all very convenient within 5-10 minutes drive.
Would happily recommend this property.
We have stayed in all three cottages for more than a decade. Each visit is better than the prior year's. Our children were small when we started renting and they're now in their early twenties. Our family and our friends' families all look forward to these escapes. Highlights are night hikes along the coast, Point Lobos hikes, Big Sur hikes, Palo Corona hikes, Mill Creek hikes, Garland Ranch hikes, and Monterey Bay crab.....Recently we've spotted condors, dolphins, whales of several types, otters, sea lions, and seals. Mass across the street at the Monastery is special for those so inclined. A very special place that has been cared for lovingly. Thank you!
My wife and I wed on Monastery Beach in 2004 with this property overlooking our ceremony. I promised her one day I'd get her this house, and on our 10 year wedding anniversary I gave it to her... if only for a week. But what a beautiful week. What a beautiful property, what a beautiful view. The perfect setting for... well just about anything. You can have a romantic getaway, you can have your children run around and play, you can have your extended family come stay (and watch the kids for that romantic time you're looking for), you can just sit on the beach chairs and drink a hot cup of coffee or a couple glass as of wine if you prefer. If it gets too cold you can go inside and not miss a thing. You can light a fire in the fireplace long after dark and still make s'mores. You have instant beach access and access to trails that lead all the way north to Carmel State Beach, no need to drive. Private, even with two other houses on property, and hardly any beach traffic on the north side of Monastery Beach. This main house is a Historic property, built in 1875, and has aged like a fine wine. You will feel the charm and joy of this property, and you will never want to leave. It's quite telling when your 3yo daughter wants to leave the park because "I wanna go back to da beach house!" to see mermaids and whales.
This was the fourth year my husband and I have stayed in these cottages with our dog and we loved each cottage. They are just above the ocean surf, but not in the middle of a subdivision. The views are spectacular looking out toward Point Lobos and the bay, with outdoor benches for savoring the sunsets. The 3 cottages are private and in the middle of state park lands, with a great trail starting right outside the property that goes along the ocean into Carmel. There is a lovely little beach and rocks right by the house, down some stairs to it is easy to access. The houses are very clean with beautiful linen and comfortable furniture. This year we chose the larger Whalers Historical House because my daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter (5 Years old) joined us for the weekend. They were amazed by the location and great views. We loved the big bedroom upstairs with a view from the bed across the bay. The house is so close to Carmel that we enjoy touring our favorite galleries and restaurants. Even closer is the Sea Harvest fish market and restaurant, less than a mile away, as well as a handy Safeway. We highly recommend a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium with amazing and beautiful displays for all ages; they also have a terrific restaurant for lunch.
