Contemporary 3-bedroom house centrally located in Chilmark. Architect-designed and craftsman-built. Split level home contains master bedroom suite with king sized bed and attached spa (hot tub, sauna, walk-in shower) and 2 additional bedrooms and full bathrooms. House comfortably sleeps 8 + and is particularly suited to multi-generational groups or two families wanting to vacation together. Central A/C. In addition to the 3 bedrooms, there are 3 sleeping lofts and a large and quiet study with desk space for two+. Situated on a beautifully landscaped lot with a large lawn, this property can easily accommodate 2 families. The well designed layout affords each family some privacy in 2 separate sleeping areas. Comfortable living room with flat screen TV, fireplace and games/puzzles galore. Fabulous water views of Menemsha Pond can be seen from the roof deck. Though the property is walking distance to Chilmark Chocolates, the Chilmark Store, Library and the Chilmark Community Center (tennis, day camp and cultural activities) it maintains a quiet country feel. As a renter, you will have access to the two 'residents only' Chilmark ocean beaches: beautiful Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket.

A typical day at the Boston Hill Getaway: To start your day, walk to the Chilmark Store, buy your morning coffee and newspaper and sit on one of the rocking chairs on the porch. When you get tired of people watching, cross the street and find some good reading material at Chilmark’s outstanding public library. Then head to one of the best beaches on the Island, Lucy Vincent Beach with your sandwiches from the Chilmark Store. After a day on LVB, return to the Boston Hill Getaway and rinse off in the outdoor shower. Barbecue your dinner on a gas grill while enjoying the view from the deck. After dinner, climb the spiral staircase to the spacious roof deck to watch a beautiful sunset over Menemsha Pond, then hang out in the comfortable living room talking or enjoying a movie on the large flat screen tv.

There are chairs, table and an umbrella on the roof deck and cocktails and brunches are nice to have there.

Space Well Designed for Two Families: As noted above, the interior of this Boston Hill Getaway has a master bedroom wing with its own bath, spa area and office. The spa connects to the master bedroom but is also accessible from a separate entrance. The spa can also be closed off to maintain privacy in the master bedroom. Next to the master bedroom is a large study area and a full bath which contains a sleeping loft. There is also a deck off of the master bedroom. On the other side of the house is a guest wing with two bedrooms and a shared full bathroom. Each bedroom offers a loft area with sleeping accommodations. There is a small deck off each of these bedrooms, with direct access from the outdoor shower through large sliding glass doors.

An Open Feel With a Lot of Natural Light: The living room is adjacent to a large open deck. The dining area and the kitchen are a few steps up from the living room. This separation creates a private feel in both the dining area and living room while preserving the openness of the first floor (eat dinner peacefully while the children play in the living room.) There are partial water views from the dining room, from the deck off the master bedroom and most notably, from the roof deck where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Other features which make the Boston Hill Getaway a great vacation home include: an easily accessible basement (for bicycle storage), a wind sculpture on the lawn and quiet dirt roads which lead down to the scenic fishing village of Menemsha.

The Vineyard is increasingly active in the off-season, and Islanders know that the winter months are just as beautiful as the summertime.

The winter is a good time for a quiet retreat; escape to a cozy, private niche of the island to pursue writing, music, explore your photography, en plein air painting; yoga, qi gong, tai chi classes, meditation gatherings, massage, dance, aerobics, pilates, and much more to make your winter relaxing.

Groceries are a short and picturesque 15-20 minute drive away, with Lucy Vincent beach on the way - winter beach walks are bracing and beautiful - as well as many Land Bank properties which offer hiking and walking trails.

With leaves down in fall until spring, even while driving along the main roads you will notice houses back in the trees which are not visible in the summertime, which may lead you down roads you otherwise would have missed!

There are two major film festivals on the Island in the off-season. MV Independent Film Festival in March at the Chilmark Community Center and MV International Film Festival over Labor Day weekend at the state of the art Film Center. Hotels fill up for these events.

Why Steve Seckler chose Martha's Vineyard

Unlike many other 'summer' houses on MV, this house was built as a home. The owners lived year round in the house for over 25 years and have been active members of the Chilmark community and in non-profit causes on Martha's Vineyard. Prior to that, they spent many summers renting properties around Chilmark.

As a result, the property has been very well cared for and the owners continue to care a great deal about the experience that family members and renters have when they stay at the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our stay at your unique home on Martha's Vineyard was a delight from the beginning to the end. Since your home is a "one of a kind home" and built for your family,it is both tasteful and warm. It felt as if we were visiting a friend's home rather than a sterile renting. The kitchen and dining room were of special pleasure. Every item required for cooking or serving our extended family were available. While all of the bedrooms were comfortable, the master bedroom with its fine linens, sauna, and separate deck made us feel as if we never wanted to leave. Also, the bedroom's location allowed us some privacy.

We appreciated the beach chairs and umbrellas left for our use. While the beaches on the Vineyard are worth a visit, I loved sitting on your deck looking at the flowers and listening to the birds. The location of your home was most convenient to shopping and the beach.

Once gain, thank you.

Fantastic house

  • 5 of 5

I wholeheartedly agree with all the other rave reviews of this wonderful, extremely clean and well-equipped house. We had seven in the house, ranging from 19 to 80 years old. One night we invited additional family members for dinner and were easily able to cook and serve dinner for 13. During our stay, my husband had to work much of the time, and the large office was honestly a better set-up than he has at home. I was a little nervous about the "sleeping lofts", which we did need to use with 7 people in the house, but the 2 we used were basically like very nice small bedrooms, completely comfortable with windows that open and fans provided. With access by ladder, they're obviously not appropriate for the very young or very old, but for anyone else you can just think of them as extra bedrooms. We fully enjoyed the outdoor shower, all the decks (especially rooftop), the jacuzzi and sauna. When a wild thunderstorm passed through one night and the power went out for a bit, the house's generator kicked in immediately so we weren't left in the dark. Highly recommend.

LOVED IT

  • 5 of 5

A marvelously habitable house, perfectly located. It's just far enough in from the road to be perfectly quiet, yet close to Lucy Vincent Beach and Menemsha. We lost count of the many decks -- at least four -- which means that there's always a choice between sunshine and shade, company or privacy. Loved the outdoor shower, and were grateful for the sauna. We were just two in house that probably could hold a huge extended family, yet the space always made us feel cozy. The home office, elegantly set up for two, made the intrusions of desk-work into our time off almost pleasant. The outdoors -- lawn, garden, a few shade trees, a field beyond -- was beautiful to behold, nourishing for the soul. We weren't quite as wild about the kitchen setup as some other guests, but that's because we were cooking crazy-ambitious Asian recipes with woks and what not. We never did figure out how to use the TV for anything more complicated than network broadcasts -- I would count that as an advantage. Who wants to watch TV in such a lovely place? The hosts were kindness itself. Martha's Bikes delivered to our door. Would be happy -- grateful -- to return.

Best location, great rooftop deck at sunset!

  • 5 of 5

Our first trip to Martha's and we stayed in this home. It is located in a great area of the island, convenient to amenities. It is close to Lucy Vincent beach, our favorite on the island. The rooftop deck is perfect for watching the sunset, if you are not at Menemsha Beach with the crowds. Kitchen is very well appointed and we were very comfortable during our stay. The owners even helped us reserve ferry tickets for the trip. Highly recommend these accommodations!

Great House

  • 5 of 5

First off, I want to highly recommend this house to anyone looking for a great getaway vacation experience with superb amenities close by in one of the best areas in all of Martha's Vineyard. The house is spacious and beautifully designed allowing for everything you need to relax and recharge. The kitchen is equipped with all necessary items allowing you to cook any meal and entertain a large family. The master bedroom has a beautiful spa connected to it in case you would like to enjoy the jacuzzi or steam room. The sunsets from the roof are spectacular as you have a beautiful view of the surrounding area and water. Everything within and outside the house aims to please all the way down to the linens, towels, spa, comfortable furniture, beautiful lawn, flowers, multiple decks, grill, beach gear(umbrella/chairs,) Internet and close driving distance to great beaches. The house is also within walking distance to the general store, Chilmark Chocolates and The Chilmark Tavern.

To boot the owner is very attentive and does their best to ensure you are set up accordingly to enjoy your stay. As I said before I would highly recommend this house to any family looking for a great Vineyard experience.

Welcoming And Spacious

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at this cozy retreat. When it rained we snuggled on the couches as we looked out over the gorgeous greenery and listened to gentle sounds of rain on the roof. There were many good bedrooms, most of which conveniently had an associated bathroom, so there was plenty of space for everyone. The kitchen and dining room in the center of the house truly felt like the heart of the home. We all congregated there often, giving us great family bonding time. The house was stocked with everything we needed, so our vacation couldn't have been made simpler. Best of all, the house is tucked away in a quiet pocket, but still very centrally location in Chilmark. Great house in a great location!

Wonderful private get-away

  • 5 of 5

My husband & I greatly enjoyed our stay on Martha's Vineyard in large part because of this house and it's location. The layout and design of the house is a fascinating architectural work of art. The house is located just off the main road and yet close to dirt roads that are perfect for running and biking and we did both. The bike shop in Vineyard Haven very kindly dropped off bikes and picked them up again at the end of our stay. We spent many hours watching the stars from the roof deck, reading peacefully and being mesmerized by the beautiful wind spinner in the yard. I have recommended this house to all of our relatives who are close enough to make a visit. Thank you Gamsons!

Car: recommended

The architect designed, craftsman built Boston Hill dream house is located right in the center of Chilmark and halfway between Lucy Vincent Beach (Chilmark's notorious treasure) and Squibnocket (a beach with less surf that is good for families with smaller children). It is only 1.5 miles from LVB and a 30 minute walk into Menemsha if you take the scenic dirt roads. By car, or an easy walk, you are just moments from the Chilmark Store, the Library and the Community Center and famous Chilmark Chocolates! You will also be located a 5 minute drive from Menemsha, the beautiful fishing village where every evening, people come to buy fresh fish at the dockside and watch sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy a 'classic' Chilmark vacation on this beautiful property that is centrally located, yet is nestled in the woods far enough away from State Road to have a quiet feel.

Other Activities: Kayak and bike rentals are available in the area. Squibnocket is an early evening surfers' hangout. Deep sea fishing charters and jetty fishing are a popular recreational activity as well.
